My hobby is building and restoring classic hot rods and Corvettes. I have read countless articles and books on the engine subject and have garnered many tid-bits along the way...But this book takes all those tid-bits (plus many more) and puts them in 144 picture and chart filled pages!Vizard is my new favorite author because he explains very complex subjects and makes them much easier to understand. Each chapters focus is explained in detail on how you can pull more horsepower from it: 1-The Basics, 2-Induction, 3-Fuel Delivery, 4-Intake Manifolds, 5-Supercharging, 6-Cylinder Heads, 7-Porting and Flow Testing, 8-Ignition Systems, 9-Camshaft 10-Cam Events, 11-Valve Train, 12-Short Block 13- Exhaust Manifolds, 14-Mufflers & Tail Pipes.He even explains how to build a great head flow bench (that will rival a pro bench) with a shop-vac! Just built mine for about $10 and can't wait to pull the heads off my '34. I just ordered his other book ""How to Port & Flow Test Cylinder Heads" for even more detail.Vizard also gives equal time to in-line 4 cylinder and V-8 engines in the text (although the pics lean toward V-8's). He explains when the engine science is the same and when different for your cylinder configuration.I really feel that I have learned so much more than I knew (and realized the mistakes I have made) just by reading this book. The chapters on Cams and the one on Carburetors finally made these items less of a trial and error exercise, and more of a "get it right the first time" for me.Can't rave enough on how stoked I am. Beginner or shop pro, you will learn something.P.S. This is not a shop manual on how to assemble an engine. It only explains how to determine the best components to use for your horsepower and torque needs.

Still reading through but I'm liking what I've read so far. My first book on this subject so I can't compare to other books but I think it's great & I can't imagine another book being significantly better. I've already applied some of the ideas to my daily ride. I definitely like that he provides dyno supported numbers to show what worked & what didn't. Although most of it (so far) is based on V8 domestics, he does reference imports (more my thing) and what I've read so far should apply to any engine. Although bigger displacement engines will get bigger gains I would expect the "gain difference" between two mods to translate directly to a 6 or 4 cylinder.Also helpful to debunk some myths, such as bigger intake tubes will always get bigger gains. Interesting to see that a "tuned" intake, which could be a smaller diameter than other options, can gain more than simply bolting on a large diameter intake.Bottom line, a great book so far & I would recommend it.

This book was exactly what I was hoping for. I have read a fair amount of books on airflow and engine theory, and many of them just throw out a bunch of equations and formulas that MAY suggest the optimal parts combination (as the equations were written by individuals through their own testing). This book differs from that in that you are essentially getting the information straight from the horse's mouth. David Vizard lets you know exactly what works for him, and how you can apply it to your own workings. It is the type of book that you will read 10 times and pick up something new each time.It is also great that this book deals with engine theory in general, not just what works on a SBC with a carburetor. Highly recommended for the enthusiast or the professional!

I like all that David Vizard writes! His recommendations on camshafts are thoroughly disputed among engine builders and cam grinders alike, and they are both wrong! I used Davids camshaft profile recommendations to the letter on several builds with fantastic results. His build knowledge and advice is priceless. Pay close attention and follow his recommendations and you will find more output!

If your interested in small blocks just buy it. David Vizard is one of the best writers out there and this book has so much useful information that it is a "must have" for any SBC fan. I borrowed and read twice in a week it before decided that I had to have a copy of my own. Its that good! His book, Building SBC's on a budget is another one that everybody needs to have. I would say buy it first and this one second though. David is a Writer, Engine builder, Racer, Machinist, owns a dyno and has done it all his life. Not like most books that are written by Geeks that have never got there hands dirty. This guy speaks to us,,, the gear-heads. He is the modern day Smokey Yunick but instead of drinking, smoking, and chasing whores, (not that there is anything wrong with that), David has spent much time writing what he has learned so that we all can use it. Order it and don't look back. If all the Small Block Chevy books out there these are the first two that you need.

This is one of the two very best engine engineering books along with Smokey Yunick's Power Secrets. Covers cyl. head porting and every other facet of building an engine to make power. You MUST have some of the information in this book if you are a DIY engine builder.

I finished this book over 3 weeks ago and couldn't put it down until I had finished it. It was a very powerful 2 hours at which I would find myself crying. I don't believe the message is to doubt whether or not Cassie said "yes" but whether or not YOU have the faith to believe in God and to always put God first in your life. I have passed this book on to my Mom and she has passed it on to others....hopefully down the line it will touch each person as it has touched me. To re-examine my own life and my relationship with Christ and how I will help my two beautiful sons grow up to be spiritually wonderful people.

I think that anyone who truly want's to know what it's like to get your child through tough times, this book is for you.Cassie's mom wrote this book and included letters from friends, and family. It's not a book about the fact of whether Cassie said yes in the library or not. It's a book about the fact that Cassie said yes in her life! That fact is what is important here, nothing else. I personally believe that if the murderers DIDN'T ask Cassie, it doesn't matter, she believed in Jesus Christ and had grown to love him as we all should. I only wish that the teens that I work with in my church were as strong in their faith as Cassie was in hers.I recently attended NCYC, National Catholic Youth Conference, in St. Louis. At the conference, there was a student from Columbine who gave a talk, and explained the ordeals of that day. She told us that the love of Christ was truly present because many MANY more people were supposed to die that day, but didn't. She also said that because of this tragedy many people have turned to God. It's sad to think that it takes a tragedy to get people to turn to Him, but perhaps that's why they happen.At any rate, this book was written by a mother in grief. I personally don't care if she does make the most of this tragedy that she has suffered through. Write a book, make a movie, whatever. Many people, including prisoners make the most of their stories to get through things. They make a ton of money doing it too, but so what? If it gets our attention and helps us understand, isn't that what matters? I think she earned the right to get through her grief any way that she can. And in this book she is doing that, while at the same time she is providing those of us involved with youth an insight to the results that "Tough Love" can provide.Read this book, or don't read it, it's your choice. However, don't criticize the author for taking the courage to write it because her daughter "might not" have said yes in the Library just before her death. The fact of the matter is, she DID say yes in her life.God bless you all.

This book about Charles Dickens is fascinating. I learned things that I had never heard before and can understand his motivation for his writing of his characters.

This was used for School summer reading. It's more about Charles Dickens life, then the Street Children of London. Not a book I would choose to read, but it was very informative about Charles Dickens life and why he wrote some do his books and stories.

I had already read this book which I checked out from the Library. I like it because it's an easy and informative read for adults or children. I also feel an affinity and wanted this in my own library, as I had relatives in England about this same time, who chose to immigrate to Utah instead of living such a hard life. This has made a world of difference to me and my family and I want to share this as well as all the good Mr. Dickens did with his fabulous story-telling ability, with my own children and grandchildren. I believe this book also helps us understand how truly blessed we are to live in this place and time. I am thrilled to now own this book for myself. It's in good shape and I will treasure having it. Thank you for your service.

In the middle of Charles Dickens's most famous work, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Scrooge encounters two children revealed to him by the Spirit of Christmas Present. They are "yellow, meager, ragged, scowling, wolfish." Appalled by their appearance, Scrooge asks, "Spirit are they yours?""They are Man's," replies the Spirit. "The boy is Ignorance. The girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing is erased.""Have they no refuge or resource?" Scrooge asks.The Spirit responds by turning Scrooge's own words from earlier in the book against him. "Are there no prisons?" he asks. "Are there no workhouses?"By the end of the book, Scrooge undergoes a change of heart, better understanding the causes and consequences of poverty as well as his obligations to the poor. He could easily stand in for Dickens's well-to-do readers and their indifference to the plight of many of their fellow citizens.At the time that Dickens was born in 1812, the average lifespan of a Londoner was 27 years; for the poor, 22. Life, even for the wealthy, could be brutal and short, but for the poor it was a misery most of us cannot even imagine. Among the working poor, parents worked up to 16 hours a day for six or seven days a week in jobs that were poorly paid, physically grueling and often dangerous. Half of the children died before reaching their fifth birthday, and for those who survived, they could expect to begin working beside their parents in factories by age 10.Charles John Huffman Dickens was lucky enough to be born to a middle-class family in a country town. But his father was a naval clerk with a taste for the good life, frequently landing the family in financial trouble. In search of better opportunities, they moved to London in 1822. This is when their fortunes took a turn for the worse. Dickens's father got so deep in debt that he was thrown into a debtors prison. At the age of 10, Dickens was sent to a blacking factory --- a place that made "blacking," or polish for shoes and appliances --- to help support his family. The death of a wealthy relative allowed them to pay off their debts.But by 1827, they were in financial trouble again. Dickens left school at the age of 15 to work, using his education to become a junior clerk in a law office. From there, he became a freelance court reporter, teaching himself shorthand to be able to do the job, then working for a newspaper covering politics.His first short story was published when he was 21, but lacking the courage to sign his own name, he submitted it under the pseudonym "Boz." These stories and sketches would eventually become SKETCHES BY BOZ, published in 1836. The book was so popular that his publisher suggested he write a novel to be serialized in a monthly publication. Dickens accepted the challenge and wrote THE PICKWICK PAPERS. Londoners of all backgrounds loved the its lighthearted humor.This success gave him the courage to write his next novel on a subject close to his heart. In 19th-century London, workhouses were places of last resort for the destitute. Conditions were so poor that people would rather go to prison, take their chances on the street, or commit suicide rather than pass through those doors. Dickens's family had narrowly escaped the workhouse. And it was in this place of despair that that he would set OLIVER TWIST, his first serious novel about an orphaned boy who escapes the workhouse only to fall in with a gang of pickpockets. While some critics protested the final revelation of Oliver's highborn origins, the fact that a person of good birth could fall into such misery became a rallying point for social reform, with Dickens as the spokesman for the deserving poor.Dickens used his influence not just to sway public opinion, but also to raise money for social institutions, among them the London Foundling Hospital. Originally founded by a persistent sea captain, the institution was chartered in 1741 to prevent the "dropping" of infants in the streets. Murder was a capital offense in England, but according to the law, "dropping" a child in the street to die a "natural death" was not.Despite his own patchy education, Dickens believed that a good education was foundational to improving the lives of the poor. Thus he championed Ragged School Union, a series of schools, begun as Sunday Schools for religious education, that eventually expanded to teach writing, math and job training to poor children in their off-hours. Dickens also believed in reforming existing schools for wealthier children. Horrified by the poor conditions and limited education of the Yorkshire Schools, where unwanted children were sent to board for years at a time, he wrote NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, which galvanized public opinion to outlaw its abuses. Each of his books spans class divides, giving us a window into life as it was lived in another place and time.Andrea Warren's CHARLES DICKENS AND THE STREET CHILDREN OF LONDON focuses primarily on Dickens's life as it relates to social reform. It does not shy away from difficult topics, including the ways in which children were used for all manner of labor and often given away by their parents in the hopes that they would find a better life at one of London's charity institutions. It does not delve deeply into Dickens's literature, but does get into the history of many of the charitable institutions and the customs and attitudes that led to conditions deemed unthinkable today.Warren also acknowledges that the problem of poverty --- with particular attention to its impact on children --- is with us today. While we are shielded from many of these problems in the U.S. --- in part by a welfare system that keeps families intact and sends children into foster care rather than institutions --- we have not yet solved the problem of what to do with the world's poor. According to estimates by the United Nations, one in six children under the age of 15 --- 150 million children --- works full time. While 300,000 children have been adopted internationally into the U.S. since 1950, currently 1.5 million American children are in foster care and in need of permanent homes. Worldwide estimates put the number of street children across the globe at 100 million, while in Africa, 35 million children have been orphaned by AIDS.In addition to an excellent bibliography, CHARLES DICKENS AND THE STREET CHILDREN OF LONDON does offer a few "what can you do?" suggestions for donations. But the greatest value of Warren's book is its powerful defense of literature as a tool for social change. For modern-day readers, Dickens's work is often seen as a quaint window into the past. But in his day, it was a clarion call with serious social consequences. In an age of austerity where we are cutting back both on social welfare and the humanities, this book suggests that these things can have a powerful impact on human life. Literature (and I would include all the humanities) can be more than a frivolous pursuit or a disposable entertainment. It has the potential, as with Scrooge, to change the human heart.The coming year will mark the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens's birth. About the Author

Kassia St. Clair is a freelance journalist and author based in London. She graduated from Bristol University with a first-class honors degree in history in 2007 and went on to do a master’s degree at Oxford. There she wrote her dissertation on women’s masquerade costumes during the eighteenth century and graduated with distinction. She has since written about design and culture for publications including The Economist, House & Garden, Quartz, and the New Statesman. She has had a column about color in Elle Decoration since 2013 and is a former assistant books and arts editor for The Economist.

I'm a history buff so this book caught my attention and I was not disappointed, the author gives each color a short 2-3 page history an added bonus is each page of the color has a band down the side of that color, there are some colors I have never heard of before, so that history was interesting and it uses in art explains why the artist were so exacting in their craft, so if off beat history books are your thing, I would suggest getting this book. It is a keeper. I will look fwd to seeing other books by this author.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I wasn't expecting very much, but was surprised by the depth of research in each of the colors shown here. The information comes from art history, of course, but also includes military history (who knew Lord Mountbatten had a camouflage color named after him?); archaeology (Neolithic paintings with a description of the color palette used by stone age people) and chemistry (who knew that some of the chemical techniques to make colors were so complex or lengthy to complete?).Each page has the color placed on the edge, and an anecdotal description and history of each color or shade. Each description is a page and a half or more, but each one did the best thing that an author can do- make the reader want to find out more. The old description of good writing, that it is "for provocation rather than information", is accomplished here, since the reader is provoked to find out more.Recommended for larger libraries with reference sections; art libraries and collections; general humanities collections, and high school libraries. Not a good book for reading in one sitting, but it is a good travel book or one for reading with frequent interruptions (in short, a good bathroom book). I enjoyed it.

This is such a fun, original, fascinating book. I love color and design, and got this as a Christmas present. It's an interesting cross between a reference book and coffee table book - you could definitely leave it out in your living room, but it's not so big that you can't read it in bed. It's beautiful, and I like the simple design. Having the histories and associations of the most "colorful" colors is so fun, and the re-readability is great. I would recommend!

Completely fascinating book. You get a college education in history and geography as well as pigment history by reading it, yet it is very conversationally written. You can pick it up and flip through it and read whatever interests you or you can read it color chapter by chapter. IT'S A WONDERFUL BOOK that many artists, craftspeople and others would love as a gift.

I rarely write reviews, but this book stood out from my recent purchases. I bought this as a gift for a friend who is into painting and, as someone who is not artistically inclined, I was pleasantly surprised. The stories are genuinely interesting, and I found myself (carefully) flipping through them before wrapping the book up. Definitely not the cliche-y content I was expecting. Externally, the binding is excellent, and the edges of the chapters are in the respective colors - a nice touch that makes the book stand out. Highly recommended

our grandson was born with mytonic dystrophy. i knew nothing about it. our son went to the library at the hospital library and read everything he could find. my sister saw this book and ordered it for me. what a marvelous gift!! it has it broken down in an easy to read format.it's a wonderful book to consult when one has questions. our grandson's muscular dystrophy hadn't seen it before.he thought it was great. his book is a huge volume with terms only he would understand.bfenneman1175@sbcglobal.net

A family member was diagnosed with type 2 so I was anxious to read and find out what I could about myotonic dystrophy. This book was written very well - with language I could easily understand. I read it (kindle version) in a few short hours. I was so glad to find such a wealth of information in one place. I would highly recommend this book!

It is a very informative book. It helps the non-medical professional understand this disease. It is clear and easy to understand.

Very good, easy to read and written in simple to understand language, for the non-medical reader who has recently discovered the genetic problem in the family. It arrived in a week in good order when we were hungry for information.

I am learning more as I read it about the disease. I appreciate the understandable wording. This is a disease that runs in my sons dads family.
