Total Control by Lee ParksAfter reading Keith Code's Twist of the Wrist books and David Hough's Proficient Motorcycling, I wanted to look at a few other books on riding to gain more knowledge. Parks, Code, and Ienatsch focus more on racing due to their background in professional motorcycle venues. Generally speaking, most riders on the street won't apply every technique, but the skills and theories apply in either situation.Parks has his own Advanced Riding Clinic (ARC), and recommends it on a higher level than the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Experienced Rider Course (MSF ERC). All of the concepts taught in this book are apparently taught in his ARC. There are many good basics featured in this book, but it does not really help the inexperienced to intermediate rider as much as Hough's Proficient Motorcycling.Parks spends a lot of time talking about general theories from springs, shock dampeners, to managing fear, improving concentration, and looking at everything from a beginner's mind (Zen). These are certainly useful for anyone interested in motorcycles, and Parks even recommends other books specializing in each of these fields. At times, Parks' likes to brag about his achievements and proficiency in everything from martial arts to racing motorcycles, but he does cover a great deal at a surface level. He provides recommendations on safety equipment, recommended adjustments for better ergonomics, and how to speed shift.However, some of Parks' advice contradicts that of Keith Code and David Hough, and other authors. Parks does not believe in pivot steering, and recommends using both brakes - but to practice threshold braking with the rear brakes to find that certain point before lockup. Parks recommends using only your inside arm to steer, while Ienatsch will say to use both arms.Unfortunately, he does not back up these claims sufficiently. He would cite one professional racer that uses both brakes and affirms this is the correct way contrary to what other authors might feel. That said, I could cite that Valentino Rossi occasionally sticks his right leg out during hard braking and that we should all do that (Cycle World letter to the editor indicated that Rossi did this because it felt like he could brake deeper before a corner).Parks also mentioned that carbon fiber knuckle protectors on gloves are a no no, because the carbon fiber can shatter on impact and fragments might dig into your hand. I don't know much about this, but carbon fiber knuckle protectors do appear to be the latest fad in gloves. I've tried on a few shooting/tactical gloves with these doo-dads and they are uncomfortable.Total Control isn't as comprehensive as Hough's Proficient Motorcycling, but there are lots of photographs, diagrams, and additional information on speed shifting and rev matched downshifts to help out riders.Overall: 4/5 stars, I recommend Proficient Motorcycling and Twist of the Wrist 2 instead, or to buy Total Control for additional information.

I just finished reading this new version of this book and compared it to the previous (2003) version, which i also own. The new edition contains LESS information than the previous one. The two versions are overall the same (same chapters, same content, with some different pictures), but the major difference is that the new version omits all of the diagrams which teach how to practice. I have also taken the "total control advance riding clinic" course and these diagrams are the basis of the course. once again i am baffled as to why the new version of this book omits the most important features that are the most helpful to practice the teachings of the book

I first met Lee at the Indy race in 2008. He seemed comfortable around the chaos and had some program on riding. Another riding course, I thought, this might be fun. Until I read the book and showed up for class. This should be the industry standard for safety training in the US. Never before has an author gone to so much trouble riding, racing, and reviewing material, then boiling it down to digestible chapters for your enjoyment. TC2 is almost a revolution since the original book was published. Many of the chapters have been refined, improved, and expanded to provide even more information on my favorite subject - riding in control.

This is a fantastic book. I've been riding for six years and it seems like Lee Parks has taken my riding to a whole new level. The chapters on Body Positioning and Low-Speed Turns are worth the price of the book alone. However I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner. I feel David Hough's book Proficient Motorcycling is the best book out there for beginners. I know it helped me tremendously when I started riding. For me, Total Control kind of picks up where Proficient Motorcycle leaves off and builds on techniques such as counter-steering. But both are excellent books.

Slightly better written than Keith Code's book, "A Twist of the Wrist" with a slightly more narrow focus. Keith's book was about the "track". Lee Parks' book is about general riding with some excellent advice about the track. As with everything there are many different ways of doing the same thing and Lee Parks' view is nothing different. The key is Lee Parks clearly knows what he is talking about and provides the beginner and the routine rider with basics that everyone should be familiar with before riding. I highly recommend. By the way - I ordered the electronic version for my Kindle and a hard copy for the coffee table. The paper version of the book is a soft back, slightly oversized, on excellent slick paper quality with excellent color images and graphs. A nice addition to the motorcycle books in the library.

Solid fundamentals. good explanations. After you read this you will be more informed than 90 percent of those squibs on the streets. But there is still plenty to learn after you read this book. Personally, I think this book, or something comparable like twist of the wrist is a must.

When Chávez was a child, his family lost their home and became migrant farmworkers, and Chávez had to drop out of school to work. As an adult, he continued to work in the fields. I use this as a mentor text to teach compare and contrast of the lives of two important leaders who collaborated for change.

Good story... for younger children.

I bought it as a gift for three darling Mexican American/Native American girls. The 8 year old read it as part of her reading assignment for school and loved it. I had the pleasure of spending a day with Dolores Huerta recently when she visited Humboldt State University. What a wonderful woman she is. I plan to order additional copies of this book very soon.

I am glad to see a story that acknowledges that Chávez did not work alone in this struggle, and that mentions not only the grape strike, but the immigration act of 1986 as well. However, this story gives a very brief account of Huerta and Chávez's amazing work. It is also historically inaccurate. It says in one page that the 2 asked people to protest dangerous pesticides by boycotting grapes, and that as a result, the farmworkers won a healthier work environment. The next page talks about the 340-mile march as a protest against low wages. But the march happened during, not after, the boycott, and the boycott and grape pickers' strike continued for years after the famous march from Delano to Sacramento, CA. ([...])

Growing up, my mother told us we had to boycott grapes. At that time, I only understood farmworkers were treated badly and Cesar Chavez was helping them. Years later, I’ve found a bilingual children’s book that would have helped me understand, not only the history of the farmworker movement, but who Cesar Chavez was and how he and Dolores Huerta worked together to inspire a national consciousness about the treatment of farmworkers. I love that this book introduces Dolores and Cesar as children and connects their early life experiences to the decisions they made as they grew up. I value the discussion of poverty, which the author introduces by explaining that Cesar’s family ended up working as migrant farmworkers after they lost their home. Given the shame and confusion children are apt to feel when their family faces eviction and/or loss of a home, the book offers an important perspective on family displacement by following Cesar throughout the loss, showing how it impacted his life as an activist for human dignity. It also does a good job of showing how a teacher, Dolores Huerta, became a social justice leader, adding a texture and dimension to those in the teaching profession that students might not otherwise get an opportunity to witness.The illustrations by Jose Cepeda really welcome readers into the story and younger children will be engaged visually. His illustrations are lively and are reminiscent of comic book characters.I learned several things about the early lives of Caesar and Dolores that enriched my understanding of them as people and about the farmworker movement, so while the book is focused on ages four to eight, I suspect adults will learn something new as well.Given that I longed for bilingual children’s books when my two sons were growing up, I only wish I had known about this book earlier. I applaud our local library for having a copy on display and bringing it to my attention.

This memoir written by Allman with the help of Alan Light, takes in all the important periods and changes, both good and bad, in Allman's life. The many photographs (mostly b&w some color) are both interesting and add depth to Allman's writing. The end papers are pretty cool too. Reading portions of this book brought back some good memories of seeing the ABB live, when both Duane Allman and Berry Oakley were alive. Once the band started a tune, they were an unstoppable juggernaut, capable of taking a song anywhere-and they did. They were a true band-everyone was an equal-and they played their a*#es off. I wish someone would collect all the tracks by the Allman Joys, Hourglass (both albums) and the 31/st of February, into one neat box set. That would be pretty cool.The death of Gregg Allman's brother, Duane, and it's effect on Allman, runs all through this book. Basically, after writing about early family life (he doesn't like to be called Gregg-rather Gregory) and their early bands, the story really begins in Los Angeles, after the brother's bands Allman Joys (there's a photograph of that band which is a good example of the intensity of Duane's playing, at the head of Chapter Three) and the later Hourglass, has come apart, Allman learns that Duane is back in Florida, putting together ("Two drummers? Sounds like a train wreck". G.A.) a band. Needing a songwriter/vocalist, Gregg hitchhikes back to Florida to meet, and subsequently jam with the boys. Something clicks, and soon Duane surprises Gregg with a new Hammond B3 organ-along with a few very fat "cigarettes".From that point Allman writes about their search for a band name (Gregg wanted Beelzebub), with the majority of the band settling on the Allman Brothers Band. Allman also writes about the band's use of magic mushrooms (which is how a mushroom ended up as part of the band's logo), and the ensuing jams that took place. In the early days the band would play anywhere and anytime, and Allman notes that they had a limited number of songs, so they began to stretch them out into long jams in order to fill out a set-much to people's delight. In a short time the band began playing larger indoor venues and large festivals.Allman describes the backstage/between concerts happenings, especially with the many available women-so many that their road manger would hand out lists of "consent of age" laws for each state to every band member. He also writes about the band's continuing drug use-marijuana, mushrooms, cocaine, and heroin-and alcohol-among others. The brothers exploits with the Selective Service are interesting too. Luckily (for him) they lost Duane's paperwork-so he didn't "exist", and Gregg took more drastic measures-which brought back memories of those times.Some of the low points Allman writes about are the brothers growing up without their father (who was killed by a hitchhiker he picked up), the profound effect his brother Duane's death had (and still has) on him, the stabbing/killing of a promoter by a band associate, and the difficulties of being away from home. But one of the major points is Allman's testimony (for full immunity) against Scooter Herring, a friend who scored Allman's drugs, which sent Herring to jail for 75 years (which he didn't serve), and how his actions broke up the band. But he also writes that after Duane's death (and Berry Oakley's) the band was floundering, with no real direction, but the other band members saw Allman's testimony against a "brother" too much to handle, and it shattered the band for a number of years.A portion of the book is devoted to his meeting and marrying Cher. He writes about Cher giving him her phone number (while she was on a date with someone else), her need for attention, and her lack of vocal ("...if you don't like it, f*#% you". Cher) ability. Starting out producing a record for Cher, it soon became an album by the both of them ("That record sucked, man". G.A.) under the moniker Allman and Woman-which was panned by almost everyone. And it's nice (and telling) to hear Allman write about, and own up to that less than stellar recording. But differences in personality, and Allman's continued drug use brought the marriage to an end in 1979.Allman also writes candidly about his attempts to become drug free, and when he was finally free of various substances-his heavy drinking. Along the way he fights his alcohol usage (finally freeing himself), contracts Hepatitis C, has a liver transplant, and continues to make music. But he also talks about some of the good things that have happened to him (and the band)-their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his participation in the on-going reunion of the Allman Brothers Band, his well received latest solo album, and (most importantly) his family and sobriety.Not being an autobiography (in the truest sense), Allman is free to zero in on certain events and periods of time that are the most important (to him) and fascinating to fans. His conversational style of writing is easy to digest, but there are obscenities throughout the book when Allman talks about particular points. This memoir is written from the vantage point of someone who has lived through both the highs and lows in life, and if not totally triumphant, Allman has come out the other side alive to talk about it. This is a good, penetrating, look inside the life of a fine musician and a basically shy person-who has shared a number of both good and bad periods in his life. After reading this book, you'll be thankful (as Allman is) that he is alive, and that we can still listen to that world weary, soulful, bluesy voice. "My Cross To Bear". Indeed.

I have always been a fan of Gregg Allman. At the age of 14 I bought Laid Back and fell in love with it, especially Queen of Hearts. In the book we learn that Queen of Hearts is the song he is most proud of in his entire catalogue. I loved the Allman Brothers as well, with Whipping Post in my top 20. I had been listening to Laid Back a few weeks before he passed away, sharing it with my son so he could appreciate his music too. I hadn't listened to it in a decade or more and it sure holds up over time.When he died just days after I had rekindled my love for his music I wasn't ready to let go and decided to read his book. I love how he wrote it, like the two of you were sitting drinking coffee and he was telling you the whole story. And the whole story it is, he doesn't leave out much. Sex, drugs and rock n roll! He wrote it with the kind of candor and honesty I expected from him and he did not disappoint. So sad he's gone but knowing he is with Duane lightens the loss.

How lucky I was to be a teenager in the late 60's and 70's. My generation grew up with the very best music and it permeated our lives completely. (I loved it when our children discovered it on their own and excitedly wanted to turn us on to these great bands of the past. Yes, we KNOW!)So many great bands of that era, but one of the best was The Allman Brothers Band. Their sound was so distinctive, so lush, sensitive and moving.Me being from the South, I loved the Southern tones that were so familiar and comforting, yet their music was so different. It was rock and roll, and so much more. It was in a category of its own. It got under your skin...and still does all these years later.Such talent in the band, especially that of the two Allman brothers! Different, but equal in their genius. Every teenaged girl was in love with Gregg Allman. To hear that voice and those words, that of an old man who's seen it all, coming from a kid who looked like an angel.The book does not disappoint. Here you get the story from the man himself, relayed like a conversation, a frank and forthcoming one. I read it compulsively until it was finished. It fleshes out so much of the back story to the band and of Gregg himself. There was no internet in the 70's, information was gleaned from the news and magazines, or word of mouth. I knew the rough outline of what occurred in the band and the lives of its members, but so much I did not know. So grateful to Gregg for sharing his story.I must admit that I'm brought to tears these days listening to old Allman Brothers music, knowing what I know now. Their story is an epic one, filled with the highest highs and deepest lows, None more so than Gregg Allman's life itself.You're transported back to that era: the Vietnam War, the social upheaval, the youth rebellion, the racism. The Allman Brothers were in the thick of it all. This book has me thinking of things I haven't considered in years.Rest In Peace, Gregg. Your music continues to live.

A lot of my preconceived notions about Gregg Allman were laid to rest with this book. As I read it, I sought out and downloaded music of his I'd never heard before. I am a big fan of Faudree's style and buy every book I can . The quality of the advice, secrets and pictures make all of his books a must in any library! I wrote a review for the first of his book's that I had purchased. What I like about it was the way he breaks the sections down and gives a mini course on that topic and doesn' t mix it all together. Well that is how he does all his books, like the mantle and how to arrange it, wall art and how to hang it or windows and what look to go for. I read that Charles died in 2013 and I am sad because I discovered him just in the past year!

A book about decorating spaces. A study of details necessary to really finish and polish any project. He has a specific mix of decorative surfaces and items that work together. The style crosses over time and trends. His magic will work for any project, large or small. This book is an excellent read and a definite keeper for all design projects.

Mr. Faudree has knocked another one out of the park with his follow-up book to Country French Design. His high style seems to have calmed down somewhat and isn't quite as "over the top" as it was in his first book. I could literally step through the pages and take residence in any of the rooms featured.If I had a complaint, it would be that the captions didn't maintain much of a narrative regarding the rooms depicted, but basically listed material resources.

Not quite what I was looking for however lovely designs.

This is a beautiful book, with large photos, allowing a careful study of the details. Love and miss Charles Faudree; his ability to mix both high and low was truly an art.

Beautiful photography! I enjoyed this book. I enjoy perusing his work, as Mr. Faudree fills many of his design projects with so manywonderful collections hours will be necessary to really see every item used. Although many more current projects are of a less ismore style.

I have all C. Faudree books and they are all wonderful. I obtained many great ideas for decorating my own interiors.

C. Faudree is one of THE BEST country french designers. This book is loaded with pictures-an element that is crucial in conveying design concepts. If you like country french-you'll love owning this book. I gave the book a 4star instead of 5 because there are a few designs that could use some refreshing. Published in 2005, a few pics are dated looking even for what is classic, 'timeless' design.
