Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2017: With her first two novels, Celeste Ng has established herself as a writer of rare sensitivity and talent. Her debut Everything I Never Told You was picked by the Amazon Editors as the best book of 2014 and went on to be a best seller. Now, Little Fires Everywhere is sure to please her fans and attract many more. The Richardson family lives in the planned community of Shaker Heights, Ohio—a place of wealth, comfort, and stability—and they are a clan that embodies those traits. But when Mia, a single mother, and her fifteen year old daughter, Pearl, rent a house in the area, their very different lives will merge with those of the Richardson family and begin to contort the carefully laid lattice that supports their views. Once again, the plotting and pacing are nearly perfect, the characters believable and real. Ng is a master of family and societal dynamics, shifting perspectives, and the secrets that we try to protect—and readers who loved her debut will recognize the author in this second novel, even as she continues to stretch herself as a writer. We are now eagerly awaiting her next novel. --Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

Review

"I read Little Fires Everywhere in a single, breathless sitting. With brilliance and beauty, Celeste Ng dissects a microcosm of American society just when we need to see it beneath the microscope:  how do questions of race stack up against the comfort of privilege, and what role does that play in parenting?  Is motherhood a bond forged by blood, or by love?  And perhaps most importantly:  do the faults of our past determine what we deserve in the future?  Be ready to be wowed by Ng's writing -- and unsettled by the mirror held up to one's own beliefs." - Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling author of Small Great Things and Leaving Time “Witty, wise, and tender. It's a marvel.” -Paula Hawkins, author of The Girl on the Train and Into the Water “Witnessing these two families as they commingle and clash is an utterly engrossing, often heartbreaking, deeply empathetic experience…It’s this vast and complex network of moral affiliations—and the nuanced omniscient voice that Ng employs to navigate it—that make this novel even more ambitious and accomplished than her debut…Our trusty narrator is as powerful and persuasive and delightfully clever as the narrator in a Victorian novel…It is a thrillingly democratic use of omniscience, and, for a novel about class, race, family and the dangers of the status quo, brilliantly apt…The magic of this novel lies in its power to implicate all of its characters—and likely many of its readers—in that innocent delusion [of a post-racial America]. Who set the littles fires everywhere? We keep reading to find out, even as we suspect that it could be us with ash on our hands.” —Eleanor Henderson, The New York Times Book Review “[Ng] captures her setting with an ethnologist’s authority…And there are time-capsule pleasures in her evocation of 1997…The writing is poised.” —Wall Street Journal “Delectable and engrossing…A complex and compulsively readable suburban saga that is deeply invested in mothers and daughters…What Ng has written, in this thoroughly entertaining novel, is a pointed and persuasive social critique, teasing out the myriad forms of privilege and predation that stand between so many people and their achievement of the American dream. But there is a heartening optimism, too. This is a book that believes in the transformative powers of art and genuine kindness — and in the promise of new growth, even after devastation, even after everything has turned to ash.” —Boston Globe    “[Ng] widens her aperture to include a deeper, more diverse cast of characters. Though the book’s language is clean and straightforward, almost conversational, Ng has an acute sense of how real people (especially teenagers, the slang-slinging kryptonite of many an aspiring novelist) think and feel and communicate. Shaker Heights may be a place where “things were peaceful, and riots and bombs and earthquakes were quiet thumps, muffled by distance.’ But the real world is never as far away as it seems, of course. And if the scrim can’t be broken, sometimes you have to burn it down. Grade: A-” —Entertainment Weekly “Stellar…The plot is tightly structured, full of echoes and convergence, the characters bound together by a growing number of thick, overlapping threads….Ng is a confident, talented writer, and it’s a pleasure to inhabit the lives of her characters and experience the rhythms of Shaker Heights through her clean, observant prose. Before she became an author she was a miniaturist — almost too perfect for a writer of suburban fiction — and there’s a lovely, balanced, dioramic quality to this novel. She toggles between multiple points of view, creating a narrative both broad in scope and fine in detail, all while keeping the story moving at a thriller’s pace.”—LA Times “Riveting…unearthing the ways that race, class, motherhood and belonging intersect to shape each individual…Perhaps Ng's most impressive feat is inviting the reader's forgiveness for Mrs. Richardson –– a woman whose own mission for perfection, and strict adherence to rules ultimately become the catalyst for the maelstrom that ensues.”—Chicago Tribune “Like Sue Monk Kidd or Madeleine Thien, Celeste Ng has a carpenter’s sure touch in constructing nested, interconnected plots…There are few novelists writing today who are as wise, compassionate and unsparing as Ng, about the choices you make, the ones you don’t, and the price you might pay for missed lives.” —Financial Times "When you're in the mood for family drama that's not your own, Little Fires Everywhere by CelesteNg will have you hooked." -The Skimm“Sharp and entertaining—you can’t look away even when things are crashing and burning (literally)—and it possibly ranks up there with all-time great suburbia fiction, like Jeffrey Eugenides’s The Virgin Suicides.” — Goop“Opposites attract and also ignite in this thoughtful novel.” —People   "Ng writes with the wisdom of a hundred lives lived.” — Harpers Bazaar “A riveting read and one of our favorite new works of fiction this fall.” —Refinery29   “[Ng] probes privilege and the compromises it requires in a riveting novel.” –O, The Oprah Magazine“A meditation on rules, race, class, insiders, outsiders, motherhood. There is no throwaway character. And after you've raced to the end of the book, you'll want to read it again, to take the ideas and hold them up to the harsh light of 2017. Ng's novel would be a great read in any time period—but if you’re struggling with the present moment and how we got here, this novel will do what any good piece of fiction does: illuminate.” —Barrie Hardymon, NPR’s Best Books of 2017 “Like Everything I Never Told You, Ng’s excellent debut, the book plots its way into a smart, accessible conversation about race and class. But free of the restraints of Everything’s thriller construction, Little Fires gives Ng the space and patience to confront how progressive-minded communities approach identity.” –GQ.com  “[A] suspenseful, tense tale.” —W Magazine “[Ng’s] descriptions are so dead-on you can practically see the Cleveland skyline as you ride shotgun with these characters.” —Glamour“A meditation on the unspoken pains and contradictions of motherhood. Its story unspools all the raw, knotted tensions that go into making a family…Choosing a rambling van over a 401(k) isn't a sign of delinquent parenting in Ng's universe; it's just one of a series of possible paths, with its own unique pleasures and pitfalls.” –Refinery29 “Unmissable…Ng’s psychological insight is acute, yet generous,…Little Fires Everywhere examines the cruelties that we unwittingly inflict on those we claim to love.” ―Claire Fallon, HuffPost’s Best Fiction Books of 2017“Takes unerring aim at upper-middle-class America’s blind spots…a nuanced study of mothers and daughters and the burden of not belonging to our families or our communities.”  — Vogue“Totally absorbing, each character drawn so well it makes it impossible to decide whose side you’re on.”  — Marie Claire “Ng writes with the wisdom of a hundred lives lived, churning out complex characters mostly sympathetic, sometimes loathsome, but all startlingly human.” —HarpersBazaar.com“Fans of novelist Celeste Ng’s debut, Everything I Never Told You, and devotees of her resistance-ready Twitter feed can rejoice…The story drifts effortlessly between characters; each is full and memorable as they coax the novel to its fiery climax. Ng reminds us that action is a choice, and you’ll want to keep reading until the last irreversible actions play out.” —Bust “Couldn’t be more timely… Little Fires Everywhere might just be the signpost that we need, pointing a way forward with the gentle suggestion that sometimes doing the right thing means breaking some rules.” –Paste “Compelling…Little Fires Everywhere invests all of its emotional energies in the relationship between mothers and their children…in Ng’s precisely rendered perfect suburb.” –Vox “Ng’s taut class drama is calibrated for fireworks.” –New York Magazine, Books to Read This Fall  “Written with deep empathy and vivid characters who feel true to life, Little Fires Everywhere is a captivating, insightful examination of motherhood, identity, family, privilege, perfectionism, obsession, and the secrets about ourselves we try to hide.” –Buzzfeed “There are few modern writers as brilliant at capturing the complexities of a family as Celeste Ng…The book is smart, nuanced, and exhilarating—but more than anything, Little Fires Everywhere is a gorgeous exploration of motherhood in its many forms, and the many different paths that women travel to get there.” —Shondaland.com “Ng’s uncanny ability to embody multiple viewpoints makes for a powerful, revelatory novel.” –BBC.com, Ten Books to Read in September “The un-put-downable story that everyone will be talking about this Fall. A must read for book clubs.” –PopSugar “Equal parts clever, relatable, surprising and unsettling… Ng covers a lot of ground here, from class nuance to the nature of conformity. But the story really shines when she examines complex mother-daughter relationships and how they work…until they don’t.”— PureWow “Engrossing…Ng’s characters are authentic and complex, but it’s her confident narration that will invite readers to settle in for the ride—a storyteller who knows what she's doing is at the wheel…With each revelation, Little Fires Everywhere grows more propulsive and insightful, boring through the placid surface of American suburbia.” —Dallas Morning News “Ng has one-upped herself with her tremendous follow-up novel… a finely wrought meditation on the nature of motherhood, the dangers of privilege and a cautionary tale about how even the tiniest of secrets can rip families apart… Ng is a master at pushing us to look at our personal and societal flaws in the face and see them with new eyes… If “Little Fires Everywhere” doesn’t give you pause and help you think differently about humanity and this country’s current state of affairs, start over from the beginning and read the book again.” --San Francisco Chronicle“The truth is messy for everyone in Little Fires Everywhere. As she did so well in Everything I Never Told You, Ng crafts sympathetic backstories for the characters that make their decisions understandable if not entirely acceptable. She also creates layered portraits, especially of the girls and women, to raise questions about what mothers can give and what their children need when no one can stick to the rules.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Ng’s talent for depth of story and character development shines and will stay with you long after you’ve finished the book.” —Richmond Times-Dispatch   “Immersive and thought-provoking…Hang on and prepare to be mesmerized as you meet two families in idyllic Shaker Heights, Ohio.” —The Missourian “A haunting, layered story of mothers and daughters, and how they attract and repel each other.” – Seattle Times “A multilayered, tightly focused and expertly plotted narrative…A deeply impressive novel with the power to provoke and entrance.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune “One of the best novels of the fall is an emotional tale about motherhood, class and so much more… Everything I Never Told You, was good, but this is better.” —AARP.org “Mesmerizing…The result is a deftly woven plot that examines a multitude of issues, including class, wealth, artistic vision, abortion, race, prejudice and cultural privilege.” —BookPage  “Ng’s best-selling first novel Everything I Never Told You proved her deft hand at crafting family dramas with the deep-rooted tension of a thriller, a skill she puts to pitch-perfect effect in her latest entry…that is equal parts simmering and soulful.” —HarpersBazaar.com “A quiet but powerful look at family, secrets, and running from the past. Once again, Ng has delivered a near-perfect novel.” —BookRiot “An intricate and captivating portrait of an eerily perfect suburban town with its dark undertones not-quite-hidden from view and a powerful and suspenseful novel about motherhood…Ng explores the complexities of adoption, surrogacy, abortion, privacy, and class, questioning all the while who earns, who claims, and who loses the right to be called a mother…an impressive accomplishment.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Ng’s stunning second novel is a multilayered examination of how identities are forged and maintained, how families are formed and friendships tested, and how the notion of motherhood is far more fluid than bloodlines would suggest…[A] tour de force.”—Booklist (starred review)“This incandescent portrait of suburbia and family, creativity, and consumerism burns bright… As in Everything I Never Told You, Ng conjures a sense of place and displacement and shows a remarkable ability to see—and reveal—a story from different perspectives. The characters she creates here are wonderfully appealing, and watching their paths connect—like little trails of flame leading inexorably toward one another to create a big inferno—is mesmerizing, casting into new light ideas about creativity and consumerism, parenthood and privilege. With her second novel, Ng further proves she's a sensitive, insightful writer with a striking ability to illuminate life in America.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred)"Spectacular sophomore work...a magnificent, multilayered epic that’s perfect for eager readers and destined for major award lists." -- Library Journal (starred review)"Little Fires Everywhere takes us deep into other people's homes and lives and darkest corners. Along the way, Celeste Ng is always witty, engrossing, unsparing and original." -- Meg Wolitzer "Little Fires Everywhere is a dazzlingly protean work - a comedy of manners that doubles as a social novel and reads like a thriller. By turns wry, heart-rending and gimlet-eyed, it confirms Celeste Ng's genius for gripping literary fiction." -- Peter Ho Davies, author of The Fortunes   "As if it wasn't totally obvious from her stunning first novel, Little Fires Everywhere showcases what makes Celeste Ng such a masterful writer. The way she examines the complexity of place, and the people who inhabit that place, is some of the most virtuosic, compelling, and wise storytelling that I've seen in a long time. By looking so closely at this community, she opens up the entire world, and it's an amazing experience." -- Kevin Wilson, author of The Family Fang and Perfect Little World   "Yes, it's the story of one Ohio town, but Little Fires Everywhere is not that familiar tale of the underside of the American suburb. It's a powerful work about parenthood and politics, adolescent strife and artistic ambition, and the stark choice between conformity and community. Celeste Ng possesses the remarkable ability to write about the most serious of subjects with the lightest possible touch." -- Rumaan Alam, author of Rich and Pretty   "I cracked open this book mid-morning and did not even move again until it was time to turn on a light. What a joy it was to be so thoroughly taken, to let the chores and clocks and even my own breathing stop while I raced through these pages. Celeste Ng once again proves she is a force to be reckoned with. Little Fires Everywhere is a deft, smoldering masterpiece." -- Mira Jacob, author of The Sleepwalker's Guide to Dancing   "As I read Celeste Ng's second novel I found myself thinking, again and again: how does she know so much? About all of us? How does she write with such perception, such marvelous grace, such daring and generosity? Little Fires Everywhere has the irresistible pace of an expertly tuned thriller, and the observational brilliance of lasting literature. It marks Celeste Ng as a writer of the first rank, among the very best in her generation - right there with Zadie Smith and Jacqueline Woodson. I was mad for this book." -- Joe Hill, author of The Fireman and Heart-Shaped Box“I was fascinated, not to mention worried about, and frightened of and for, these intriguing characters. Celeste Ng is a powerful and poignant writer whose attention to detail is pitch-perfect. Her intuitive rendering of how and why people behave in such unflattering ways is important. Her writing is honest and rich--and I love how little fires spread here until they're put out.” - Terry McMillan, author of I Almost Forgot About You

I bought this based on the rave reviews. Half way through it I went back to check if I'd missed that it was YA. This whole book could've been a short story without losing a thing. It's been padded with uninteresting side plots, rambling, unnecessary back stories and more banal information about Shaker Heights than you can shake a stick at, not to mention photography. Without giving anything away, the topic is ageless and polarizing. Greek plays have been written on it. But, in this book it's presented over halfway through via characters other than what the first half of the book went on and on about. Unfortunately, the writing does not make up for any of this. I think teenage girls would enjoy it. I did not.

I closed this book shaking my head with mild confusion and disappointment. Instead of attempting to satisfactorily tie up the plot and corresponding plot lines, the author abandons readers with numerous unanswered questions--almost as though she'd been forced to put down the pencil at the end of the allocated time. Ms. Ng does a very credible job of developing a group of characters and getting the reader invested in their various plights in this Suburban Utopia, but at the end of it all, it's impossible to say that a single one of those characters underwent any meaningful change. Or any change at all! Nope. The story ends without any real resolution--which is an enormous negative. Of course, the author has selected a very full compliment of social injustices to inflict upon these characters: abortion, surrogate parenting, interracial adoption, interracial relationships, same gender relationships, oppressed immigrant versus governmental authority, as well as the "haves versus the have-nots"--all make a token appearance. Unfortunately, this ends up feeling contrived and very artificial, since none of characters undergo any meaningful growth or experience any new insight, at least not within the bounds of the book. I can understand the author's desire to make her book socially relevant by focusing on any of society's current hot button topics, but readers need to experience the ways that her characters change and grow due to the impact of those issues. When a story line is introduced, it needs to be followed through to some type of resolution, not just abandoned or ignored. I feel like I'm missing the second half of the book!

I really can't understand the hype of this book! Reading what I felt a middle school child wrote I was so bored with the shallow character development and overall story. Almost giving up I plodded along and it never got better. The end was just as disappointing as the beginning. Don't bother.....

I simply loved Everything I Never Told You. Even the title is great. But I was not so crazy, I'm sorry to say, about Little Fires Everywhere. I felt it was too forced, too contrived. Too much needed explanation and background, and then the points made were so blatant and in-your-face, I felt that the story was just an excuse to make these points (not that I disagreed with her, but it didn't feel like good, flowing, natural sounding story-telling). I'm sorry about this, as I couldn't wait to read another book by this author, as I thought her first book was genius.

I read the entire book but was sorry I did. Mia was made to be a hero, but I have no idea why. She was as lost and confused as Mrs. Richardson . Not only were the characters unrealistic the same could be said for the storyline.

I, and my book club are baffled by the reviews of this book. It is definitely for teens (maybe) and the storyline is unbelievable. The ending is awful too.

I hadn’t read a fiction book in and while and I saw this book listed on just about every recommendation.I am not even going to go into specific details about the book because I do not want to spoil it a bit for anyone—you just need to read it.I will say that between 20-100 pages, it was a little slow to read because there is A LOT of character building and detail BUT that pays off and it is necessary to the story and everything just falls into place. When you read this book, you are watching a story unfold and it’s thrilling and exciting. It’s such a great book. The storyline is excellent , it’s very detailed and it’s very well written. When the book ended, I wanted to read more but it was like...this just has to be how the STORY ends.I highly recommend this book.

I'd give this novel 4.5 stars. The first 100 pages (one-third of the total book) just cover a lot of character study and plot set-ups. Yes, I know some of that was later shown to be important, but I felt it went on too long. I was starting to lose a little interest but then...When the novel got to the crux of the story, it was really, really good. The plot focus about a Chinese baby abandoned at a fire station and the subsequent court battle when the single mother surfaces six months later to try to reclaim her daughter from the family in the process of adopting her, was really, really well done. All sorts of details are woven together in a terrific way.I loved how the author really paid attention to details.....one of the characters is a reporter on a second-rate weekly in Cleveland and she uses her reporting skills to dig up a lot of background on other characters. A less-skilled writer would have just had a character (who had never learned how to research) suddenly become an ace detective.I was up WAY too late finishing this book last night (really this early morning). The second two-thirds of the book are fascinating, thought-provoking and touching.I recently ordered the author's first novel on CD for an upcoming trip and I'm looking forward to it!

This collection belies its status as a "first," combining stunning imagery and metaphor with honesty and earned wisdom. It will earn its place on the shelf where you keep your most important books.--Jeanetta Calhoun Mish, 2017-18 Oklahoma State Poet Laureate and Director of The Red Earth MFADerrick Weston Brown's On All Fronts is a block party of emotions. Here, the mood shifts quickly from D'Angelo to Ghostface Killah. Brown's speakers ride the green line, earhustling for round-the-way gossip. They also ..".weep, at...black womanless streets." To the elder throwing shade, they say, "ain't no besting 'these bars.'" These poems earned every damn "right to coat each tooth in" gold.--Alan King, author of Drift and Point BlankThese poems are replete with originality (remember saxophonist Lester Young's artistic credo "You got to be original, man!") technical and emotional range, and--most importantly--feeling. They entrance the reader; and they make you rethink the world around (and inside) you. Read and re-read and re-read these poems. And recite them out loud. because they are also as musical as a kiss. I genuinely enjoyed both volumes of his Harley Encyclopedia. I am an amateur HD mechanic and have read all of the books by Rook, Buzzelli and every other performance book I could find. Peterson has a deep understanding and interest in HD engines. His comments are all well taken and even Denish's books don't get to Peterson's tech depth, though Peterson doesn't restrict himself to only performance related topics. Many of his chapters are purely engineering analysis and excellent nonetheless. I'm sorry he Didn't begin the projected 12 volume series with Sportsters, but I bought a 2001 TC88 yesterday and his books are the bibles. His writing style is more or a series of comments by category, but very readable and good natured. From a purely objective viewpoint, his books would only appeal to the HD enthusiast who really wants to master the machine. For my part, I loved them. I also recommend Denish (out of print) and Bill Rook's "How to build a Harley Torque Monster" (very available). Bill Rook's book is mistitled as it is truly one of the best and simplest performance manuals out there. Denish goes into deeper depth and is also excellent, but the Peterson books are as detailed as one can get. Both Rook and Denish illustrate their various techniques and thoeries. Peterson has no pictures and is for the technician who already knows how things work.

Great book tells it as it is, Well done Donny I am a confirmed reader of your work, if you want to know how your engine performs whats wrong with it how to fix it and how to talk to the service person working on your bike, go beyond the bull get this book and others in the series get the right knowledge and know what to ask.Donny's Unauthorized Technical Guide to Harley Davidson 1936-2008: Volume I: The Twin CamDonny's Unauthorized Technical Guide to Harley Davidson 1936 to Present: Volume II: Performancing the Twin CamDonny's Unauthorized Technical Guide to Harley-Davidson, 1936 to Present: Part I of II-The Shovelhead: 1966 to 1985 (Volume 5)Donny's Unauthorized Technical Guide to Harley-Davidson, 1936 to Present: Volume V: Part II of II--The Shovelhead: 1966 to 1985Harley Davidson Camshaft Tool Twin Cam Chain Tensioner Unloader TC88 Made in USAHarley Big Twin Transmission Mainshaft Bearing Inner Race Puller and Installation Tool Set 34902Harley Cam Crank Locking Tool for Twin Cam 88Craftsman Harley Davidson 3 Drawer ChestArsenal 5870 Tool Roll-UpHARLEY DAVIDSON WHEEL BEARING REMOVER and INSTALLER TOOLFreedom Performance Racing Black with Chrome Tip Dual Systems Exhaust for Harle

I don't see much of the "how to performance" the engine. Mostly gripes about shortcomings.Save you money and read the technical tips and technical from the high performanceparts suppliers. I have been looking at this stuff for 3 decades so know.

Great read for the novice and long time riders. Lots of history and technical data. Look for the other two books if you really want learn how to work on your Harley. Even if you don't work on your bike it's good to know about your ride.

I only glanced at the book but it looked very detailed. It was a gift. He said it was great.

One of the best manuals for the Harley Twin Cam motor. Volume I: the Twin Cam was rather poorly written, but chock full of knowledge broken down into understandable pieces. Volume II is easier to read thanks to an improved editor. Donny is the Einstein of Harley engines. Can't wait to get my hands on Volume III!I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who wants to know exactly how and why the Twin Cam works and how to make it that much better of a motor.

I have read the other works by Donny and expect this one to be as good or better. From the other reviews I feel I will be very happy. This book is a huge 713 pages so I have not been able to reach that page yet but so far I will give it a must have if you ride and work on Harley Davidsons Twin Cams.

Donny's Unauthorized Technical Guide to Harley Davidson 1936 to Present: Volume II: Performancing the Twin CamThis is a great Book for people who really want to learn how the twin cam works and learn how to make the motorcycle run like it should. Donny talks to you in a very simple way that anyone can understand.

Practical advice on hiring in-home caregivers, but more important, very helpful information regarding supporting aging elders in their own homes. Applies also to providing support in other living arrangements. Further sections of book deal with understanding the changes that come with aging and nurturing the elder, the family and the caregivers. Sections on dealing with subtleties and difficult behaviors offers specific suggestions and ideas for a range of problems (memory loss, demanding behavior, aggression, wandering, etc). The concept of "circles of care" gives dignity to the needs of all concerned. I found many suggestions immediately helpful as my family travels this journey with our 92 year old mother with dementia.

I can't say enough about this books impact on my life and family. Ann Cason, brings to light all the necessary ingredients to help you navigate through the rough waters of a senior declining and how to care for their ever increasing needs. Just this month my sister-in-law was called to help her uncle in the Midwest after a long hospital stay. She had no idea what she would be facing so I gave her Circles of Care to read on the Plane ride. She was so grateful because when she arrived she had a plan of action as well as a list of priorities to address in her short stay. In addition I am so grateful to have read this book which gave me support and ideas how to handle my own mother's issues of memory loss and emotional volatility. Thank you Ann!!

This is a mature, experienced author. Not for immature practitioners, family members, physicians or extended family...but for those willing or forced into a human reality.Cason's elegant, yet restrained language gently opens the door to the world that no one, really, expects or wants to enter. She invites you to look her you in the eye, lift your chin in dignity, grasp her hand and create a life.I'm stunned by this book.Judith Barr

Even though I am new to the process of caring for my mother as she ages,I felt a warm welcome into the circle of people who have attended toour elders, honorably, for years. Thank you.

A wonderful vision based on compassion, dignity, reminding us what it means to be truly human!

Ann Cason's book, Circles of Care, is a guide to the terrain of aging. It is filled with insight, wit, practicality, and wisdom. From the assessing of an elder's needs, through the nuts and bolts of daily care, to end-of-life issues, Cason draws on her years of experience in the field to provide helpful guidelines for caregivers.Sprinkled throughout the book are "care studies," personal stories that illustrate the complexities and richness of aging and of caring for the elderly.Cason covers many of the more common difficult behaviors such as confusion, memory loss, moodiness, and combativeness. She provides ways of working with such issues skilfully and with sensitivity. There is not even a whiff of condecension in her discussion of the elderly. In fact, there is the greatest respect for what the elderly have to each us. I highly recommend this book.

"Circles of Care" is one of a slowly-but-surely growing number of books exploring the blessings of honoring one's aged loved ones by providing in-home care. Reeve Lindbergh has considerable practical experience in this field, and this experience shows. The book is practical because it issues forth from the hands-on; the book is honest because it does not gloss over the rough aspects of caring for an aged loved one in the home. Reeve Lindbergh's "warts and all" approach to this subject matter is a high part of the book's appeal and value.I fear that many readers, including Christians, will skim such a book out of curiousity and then dismiss it with a rueful, "Well, it's a good idea, but I could never do it." Read the book carefully, and think through the implications (and the subtle, implicit warnings) before deciding that caring for your own loved one is "un-do-able."Anyone who is facing decisions about how to care and provide for an aged loved one would benefit from reading this book.

The Neon Rain is the first installment in the Dave Robicheaux series. I have read all of the books in the series as they were released but recently decided to return to the well and reread the first installment. JL Burke evokes New Orleans and the old south with all of its depravity and beauty in lyrical prose that is pure poetry, while still turning out a first class suspense-crime novel. This book has all Robicheaux's demons on display, a corrupt New Orleans Police force, his booze-addled, violent partner, Clete Purcell, the downtrodden sharecroppers and minorities, the criminal and political elite who Dave despises, and Dave's own personal demon: alcoholism. His relationship with Purcell is far more confrontational than in the later books, and his relationship with Annie is just beginning. The violence is there but not as prolific as in later books, and the booze genie comes out of the bottle one more time with a lot of action and degradation to follow. A pair of great psychotics that don't compare with some of the later creations, but still rack the tension up to 11. One of the best series going in my opinion and it was a treat to revisit these characters in the formative year.

Had never heard of James Lee Burke until I read about him in Gardens & Guns. Ordered this book first, to give him a 'trial run'. Wow! Proceeded to order the next five in the series. Love Burke's writing. He expresses what he sees better than anyone I've read in a long time. His descriptions of the bayou, the streets of New Orleans, the people of every ilk that populate Louisiana, are eye-opening. He captures emotions and situations with such clarity. The opening scene in Neon Rain, when Robicheaux is speaking with a convict he knows and who is scheduled to die in the electric chair in a few hours - you can smell the sweat of fear, the desperation and stale smoke, the accused's last grasp for some kind of absolution. I have hours of good reading ahead and can hardly wait to start the next book.

This is the first of the acclaimed Dave Robicheaux mysteries. It's a gritty, thrilling first person noir crime novel told in the edgy and poetic voice of the New Orleans cop Robixheaux. The story has action from the first page and it's less nitty gritty police procedural and more one man vs. evil. Robicheaux is a fallen human like all of us but he seeks the truth in his battle against evil in the form of drug cartels, mobsters, and every other manner of scum. I'm completely hooked on this series now and in love with the vibrant prose of James Lee Burke. New Orleans becomes just as much a character in this book as Robicheaux himself. Lots of great side characters and dialogue, too.

The premise is a good one: New Orleans detective finds a dead body on his day off and that leads him to be the target of an organized crime hit. But the amount of violence is gratuitous--every scene has a violent incident--and the detective is universally misunderstood by the pantheon of corrupt bullies that constitute everyone from small-time porn movie house operators, to organized crime bosses to federal agents to his own fellow cops. The obligatory love story doesn't have enough depth to be convincing. And the amount of street lingo and cop slang used sometimes borders on the comical. The descriptions of the city and the lake on which he lives are vivid and enjoyable. The plot, however, would benefit from less effort to portray the deepest depths of human depravity at the expense of an interesting unravelling of a mystery.

Terrible novel from a pure hack. The people talk the entire story into existence. It's 270 pages of endless, unrealistic dialogue where people don't act naturally but exist purely for exposition. Plus, it's racist too. Here's an early line that shows the author's lack of ability: "The second man was short and olive-skinned, with elongated Semitic eyes and a hawk nose." Didn't know eyes could be a racial identifier? They can if the author is racist.None of this has the ring of truth. You won't believe the narrator is a cop, or that the author knows anything about law enforcement. You won't believe any of the people in the story, they don't act like humans but like words on a page. The people in the story exist for another old white guy to express his Thoughts. The New Orleans setting is as cliched and fake as they come. None of the Vietnam War stuff rings true, either. The real mystery is how is this stuff still in print? Hack work from a career hack.

The Neon Rain was the first of the twenty books in James Lee Burke’s award-winning Dave Robicheaux series of detective novels, and an auspicious beginning it was! Burke evokes the clammy, mist-filled atmosphere of his native Louisiana and the Cajun culture of his protagonist with great skill.Robicheaux, a New Orleans police detective, has stumbled across the body of a young African-American prostitute in what seem to be suspicious circumstances. He was far outside his jurisdiction but can’t resist getting pushy when he learns that the local sheriff has squelched an investigation into her death. Pretty soon it’s clear that Robicheaux is pushing the wrong people. He finds himself tangling not just with a rural sheriff but with a powerful drug lord, the police hierarchy, and the federal government in a wild and violent quest that reawakens all his demons. The detective, a widower, is an alcoholic and a Vietnam vet with troubled memories of his time as a platoon leader. The Neon Rain was published in 1987 and loyally reflects the events of that time. US intervention in Central America — most notably in support of the right-wing “contras”in Nicaragua — was much in the news, and there were widespread rumors (with an occasional press report) that the CIA was involved in drug trafficking to raise funds to support the effort. Though those reports were discredited, widespread doubts remained for years, compounded by substantial evidence of the agency’s involvement with heroin traffickers in Southeast Asia during the previous two decades.
