And there are life saving alternatives with proven track records which, combined with the correct diet and modest exercise, can actually reverse your problem, not just "bypass" one inch it.This book is the only one I am aware of on the market to explain one of the key components of this approach to heart disease, ECP. And ECP is the only therapy to date which improves angina. IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE HAS ANGINA ALREADY, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY.ECP is treatment where pressurized cuffs are placed around your lower legs and pelvis, and hooked up to a computer that is controls the process. When your heart beats and the blood is rushing out of your heart, the cuffs relax, allowing blood flow to your pelvis and legs. After this beat has finished, while your heart "regroups" for its' next beat, the cuffs contract, milking the blood out of your legs and pelvis to force it back into your heart. This increases the blood flow to the small arteries in your heart that provide the blood flow to the heart muscle itself (coronary arteries). This treatment has been shown in a number of studies to be very effective for the treatment of angina, and, in fact, over a series of treatments can allow angina patients to increase their activity level and get off nitroglycerin and other pain remedies for angina. ECP WORKS. ECP has been shown to be effective in a number of studies, including one large multicenter placebo-controlled study (MUST-EECP, J Am Coll Cardiol. June 1999).ECP works by promoting the development of collateral circulation to your heart. Rather then have one large artery supply your heart, you "grow" other very small vessels to the size that they can give your heart the blood it needs.Most patients who are currently undergoing angiograms, angioplasties, stents and bypass surgery would do just fine with dietary change, medical treatment of their heart problem, chelation therapy, and, if they have angina, ECP. It is not likely that your cardiologist will tell you that.This book also points out why that is so. In addition to the obvious profit motive, the book explains that "we have trained too many cardiologists and in order for these cardiologists to keep up their certification they must perform a minimum number of procedures per year.""Patients are often unnecessarily scared into surgery when the doctor shows them the angiogram and announces 'this artery is what we call a 'widow maker', it is a critical lesion, if we don't operate you will be dead by Christmas, you are a walking time bomb'. You may be shocked to find out that these scare tactics are not supported by the scientific research. As you will read later, a physician cannot tell by looking at an angiogram whether a blockage will cause a heart attack or not! And just as important is the little known fact that the risk of death or heart attack is only 2% per year in patients with stable coronary disease. This statistic is so poorly known that most physicians, when asked what they believed the patients risk of death or heart attack to was, gave the wildly inflated estimates of 15% to 50% per year. When this 2% per year heart attack rate is compared to the 4% to 8% risk of death from bypass surgery, a startling fact is realized. The surgical cure for coronary artery disease can be more deadly than the disease itself."THE BEST PART OF THIS BOOK is that the book reviews, one paragraph at a time, the published literature on the results of the traditional angiogram, angioplasty, stent and bypass surgery "train" (once a patient gets on the train, it is difficult to get off) and gives you the information you need to make an informed decision with facts your cardiologist may not be anxious for you to know:"it was found that angioplasty patients had 90% more deaths and heart attacks than those patients receiving only medical therapy. Even more significant was that the risk of death, heart attack, or coronary artery bypass surgery was 42% lower in the patients that had medical therapy instead of angioplasty." (RITA-2, Lancet 1999)."We believe that the illusion of cardiology is that bypass or dilatation of coronary stenosis reduces the risk of myocardial infarction." (James S. Forrester, MD [Cedars Sinai Medical Center] Circulation 1977).Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to submit yourself to an angiogram, angioplasty, stent, and/or bypass surgery is a personal decision that only you can make. This book is well written, an easy read, and a contains a pile of information you will find difficult to piece together elsewhere. And read them now, before you are in an emergency situation and everyone is yelling at you to hop on the Medical Industrial Complex train.

In language as compelling as the importance of the topic, Dr. J. reveals well-guarded secrets about coronary disease, its usual treatment and important options such as ECP. Unless "Passing on Bypass" becomes required reading for all cardiology fellows and practitioners, it may represent the best "second opinion" anyone (faced with angina or a failed treadmill test) can obtain. Courageously written, this book could easily save thousands from making an unnecessary journey to cardiac surgery. After reading this book, the intelligent layperson will generally understand the various options somewhat better than the average cardiologist in practice...so beware.

This book should be in every cardiologist's office. I'll go even further, it should be required reading before visiting a cardiologist's office. It provides information that is well written and easily understood, quoting "medical studies" that would otherwise remain unavailable and unknown to the average patient. I think everyone, as I was, will be amazed at the results of these "studies". While it doesn't discard bypass surgery, it certainly will open your eyes as to the dark side of this over-performed procedure. I really think that this book will result in saving a lot of people's lives and I know it will help preserve a quality of life that could otherwise be lost. I have bought every book that I can find that has as it's subject matter, Bypass Surgery. This one, by far, is the best and most understandable, while providing more information to equip you in making this most important decision as to the type of treatment you may desire for yourself or a loved one.

Excellent!! What a fresh read, it was such a change of pace to have Kolya, a witty, horny young private, set as a main character with Lev during a wartime novel. I loved it, laughed along, envisioned the wretched scenery. David Benioff is very detailed and has a way of developing the characters thoroughly through out the entire book.I recommend this to anyone and would love to read this again some time. I look forward to reading more of David Benioffupdate: a lot of the reviews have said its "unnecessarily vulgar", I do not agree at all. It's wartime for crying out loud. The sexual vulgarity is not held back, it's probably exactly how most of those soldiers talked or thought. I know current day soldiers are the same way, why would these men not be? Why would he exclude that from the writing that an old man is recounting from his experience? Kolya was a man who did not hide his thoughts, of course they would be shared if he thought them.

After reading Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah I specifically looked for another novel set during the Siege of Leningrad. I am so glad I did. Although the background is the same the books were very different and illustrated the time and place in very different ways. This book feels starker, quieter while Winter Garden felt bleaker and more crowded. I think the difference may be there due to the masculinity versus femininity. Winter Garden centers on female characters and is written and narrated by a woman, while this one centers on male characters and is written and narrated by a man. I highly recommend both. I read them back-to-back over two long travel days and will likely read more soon. The time and place is fascinating and juxtaposes nicely to the lives most of us live today.I read some excellent reviews that told you why the book was excellent or detailed why it wasn't a 5 star book but was still highly recommended. I will not try to provide the same detail as those reviews as I never put any spoilers into my reviews and they did such a great job that I do not feel the need to add to them. However, I will say that the starkness of this book, the way it is written in such a matter-of-fact way, appealed to me. It painted a picture in a completely different way than any other historical fiction book I have read, and that style of storytelling made this novel a moving, thought-provoking story of hardship and perseverance.

This was a really enjoyable book, especially for someone with tastes for the perils of reality. I won't say a taste for books on war, because that really isn't the case. This is a book on surviving the experience of war. Not taking sides or fighting, just getting through it alive. Experiences change, realities change. It is quite compelling, great characters, and tightly put together. Just enough of a hint of fairy tale to make it very Russian. While it dealt with the war, it really was pretty light on horrific story matter, especially for a writer involved in Game of Thrones. While I can't rate it with my all time favorite books, I really did enjoy it, and I did read in nearly in one sitting and I did feel I was there enough to give it a five star rating. I don't think this is an easy area to write in. That this is a wonderfully written book in this area alone makes it worth reading.

I loved this book. David Benioff sure can write! Whether you're interested in WWII and the siege of Leningrad, or if you're just looking for a suspenseful, warm, creative, funny/tragic story, I recommend without hesitation. I stayed immersed in the story from the first sentence to the last, not a moment dragged, and it far exceeded my expectations.

The book starts out as a grandfather telling his war time experience to his grandson. Yet I kept wondering if I could read 5 pages without hearing about Lev or Kolya's penises. "I must have sprayed a liter of come inside her, north and south." That's part of the story a grandfather passes on to his grandson? It seemed like I was reading a suspenseful wartime novel but kept getting interrupted by a perverted teenaged boy. The raunchy comments pop up out of nowhere and distract from the storyline; it's weird. It reads as if it were written by 2 different authors who didn't know much about the book the other one was writing.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. Loved it from beginning to end. The characters are so rich and real, and the reader is immersed into a plot with palpable tension. The story takes place over just a week or two, so you can imagine the intensity of every interaction and exchange. It is the story of a 17 year old boy in WWII during the siege of Leningrad, when the city is cut off from all supplies including of course food. He is given an impossible task to complete by a Soviet officer: bring back a dozen eggs for my daughter's wedding cake. This is a time of extreme desperation, where the starving people were eating pets, and even each other. So finding a dozen eggs is truly an impossible task. Lev gets another young man as a companion for the search and their adventure is one you will not forget. When you finish the book, immediately go back and reread the first chapter to bring the story full circle. This is an amazing work!

I don't usually read historical fiction, especially novels about war. I've never watched Game of Thrones. Yet somehow I was intrigued by the premise of this novel by David Benioff. I tried a free sample and I was hooked . I never thought of choosing a novel about the siege of Leningrad , wherein the two protagonists are a Jew and a deserter from the Red Army, who meet by happenstance when they are captured and imprisoned overnight then released to attempt to complete a special task for a Colonel.The story is narrated by Lev, a seventeen year old Jewish boy. It could be a coming of age story, or " buddy road trip", but it isn't . The banter between the two young men is amusing and natural, and it helps to offset some of the heavier parts, but this a story of a dark time in history.In spite of the subject matter, I found this to be an easy read and a quick read, mainly because I couldn't put it down. I wanted to get to the end and find out how it was concluded.

I've been playing guitar for 45 years. I downloaded this book to have a quick reference for chords I don't use very often. The finger positioning for even the simplest chords are often terrible. The pictures show unused fingers curled up to the players palm, instead of over the strings, ready for the next position. The book is helpful for the less used chords as an experience player can use the suggested fingerings and adjust for practical use. This was surprising from Hal Leaonard, as I've used his guitar method books.

This chord book is acceptable because it is compact and does address a lot of chord structures that are not commonly seen in your folk/rock genres. My only complaint is that it only gives you 5 fingerings choices for each chord . There are apparently 2 book sizes. I got the smaller one. Its dimensions are 6" x 8". My older book gives you bass, middle and high fingerings which I find more helpful for what I do. I will keep this book and use it in conjunction with my other book but if I was looking at it in the music store I would probably keep looking.

This book starts out with an explanation of how to use the diagrams on each page, and then moves to an easy-to-understand intro to music theory. This discussions concentrates on how music theory applies to the guitar fretboard. My favorite chart is an explanation of what notes go into making which chords. I wanted to know things like a minor9 chord contains the 1-b3-5-b7-9 notes. This one chart lays out the construction of 44 chords in this manner.The meat of the book shows 528 chords each in 5 different positions on the neck. For each chord in each position there is:a photo of someone playing THE CHORDa staff that shoes the notes that are being played and the interval each note is from the root note of the chord. So for that minor9 chord in C it shows you C as the root, Eb as the b3, G as the 5th, Bb as the b7 and D as the 9.It also has standard guitar tabulator that show which finger goes where and which note it is playing!!!THIS IS EVERYTHING I WANTED!!!I'm a self-taught guitarist, playing since about 1972. I'm now in a praise band and am being called upon to play things I've never played before. Looking for the first time at music that has that Cm9 on it can be a time to panic. But know I know that a Cm7 barre at the 8th fret with my pinky dropped on the 1 string is all I need. Since the book shows these chords in five different locations on the neck, I'm learning that playing what might seem to be a crazy hodgepodge of chords really only requires a limited amount of movement if you start out in the right position on the neck.

Great product, small enough to fit in a typical guitar gig bag. Really nice layout with five variations of every chord listed. Both a graphic display and a photograph of every variation listed. Good explanation of chord construction theory, will expand the beginner's knowledge of music theory related to chords. More of a reference work since it won't lay open nicely on a table or desk top while you play your guitar.

I bought this book again as a Xmas gift for a long-time guitarist friend. We were practicing, just before Xmas, for a gig, learning some songs with uncommon chords and I saw him struggling with finding how best to finger these chords using the chord chart he was familiar with. I saw an opportunity to gift a good friend. It was just a few days before Christmas so I ordered another copy of this book and wrapped up my book and gifted it to him. Because of the quality of this book's construction and materials, my copy, used numerous times in the few years I've owned it, was still in like-new condition. He has been thrilled with getting it and using it often in our practices. I've received my copy in a timely fashion from Amazon and all is well.I've played acoustic guitar since 1964 and have owned a few chord books, charts, posters etc. I have found this book to be my go-to book when learning how to play chords I am not familiar with. Even more so, what I like about this book is that it shows, with an actual picture of a human hand, how to play a chord 5 different ways! This is most useful in finding the best way (position) to move from one chord to another chord in a song! Also of great worth to me and, I expect, of great worth to guitarists that have even been playing for decades (like me), the Chord Construction section of this book explains: :What is a chord?", "How does a chord get it's name?", "How do I build a chord?" !!OK, 'nuff said: Do yourself a great thing - buy yourself a copy of this book - even better, gift a copy of this book to any beginners and long-time guitarist friends you know!

I have a lot of guitar books. (Too many)Among the over twenty that deal with Chord shapes, this is the one.Don't waist your money on any other Chord book until you buy this one.I will not say more as the other reviewers have taken the time to go over theintricacies better, or the same as I could and I have to get back to practice.Along with this Chord Encyclopedia, you will need the best Chord Progression Encyclopedia which is:Mel Bay's Deluxe Encyclopedia of Guitar Chord Progressions.This is the book that one reviewer was wishing was included in the Chord Encyclopedia, but is an extension ofthe subject and does not belong in a pure Chord Shape book like this one.These two books is all you will probably ever need for Chord Shapes and Progressions.If I would have known this ten years ago, I would have saved myself a few hundred dollars.
