Review

“Historical fiction fans will gobble up Hooper’s novel and be left with the satisfied feeling that they have lived through much of the 20th century with Dorothea Lange.” (Publishers Weekly)“Hooper makes me not only feel for Lange, but also wish I could call her up like her friend, Imogen [Cunningham], and tell her I’m coming over for a visit.” (Forbes)“Hooper excels at humanizing giants....seamlessly weaving together the time, places and people in Lange’s life...For photo buffs and others familiar with her vast body of work, reading the book will be like discovering the secret backstory of someone they thought they knew.” (Washington Post)“A fascinating and sometimes surprising introduction to a woman known for her iconic photographs but not her eventful life.” (Library Journal)“Hooper deftly balances the fascinating historical fabric of the novel with the personal life of its complicated protagonist. What results is a vivid and deep story that will send the reader to the internet seeking more.I give it my highest recommendation.” (Erika Robuck, national bestselling author of Fallen Beauty and Hemingway’s Girl)“Elise Hooper’s Dorothea Lange is magnetic!...This is a winning novel from the first page.” (Devin Murphy, national bestselling author of The Boat Runner and Tiny Americans)“Written with grace, empathy, and bright imagination, LEARNING TO SEE gives us the vivid interior life of a remarkably resilient woman. Dorothea Lange’s story is about passion and art, love and family, but also about the sacrifices women make—and have always made—to illuminate the truth of the world.” (Danya Kukafka, National Bestselling author of Girl in Snow)“Gorgeously written with exquisite historical detail, Learning to See is a fascinating tale of one remarkable woman’s life. Told with the same precise prose and terrific nuance as her stunning debut, The Other Alcott, Elise Hooper proves once again that she’s a masterful storyteller.” (Lisa Duffy, author of The Salt House)“A powerful and timely view of America told through the lens of Dorothea Lange, a fascinating woman whose photographs shone a light on the nation’s forgotten and abandoned...Detailed and thoroughly immersive, Learning to See grips the reader and highlights an important period in American history.” (Chanel Cleeton, author of Next Year in Havana)“Hooper does an admirable job at condensing a multitude of decades and careers into an immensely entertaining and page-turning novel.” (Historical Novel Society)

Prior to reading this book I did not know anything about Dorothea Lange beyond her photo of Migrant Mother. Dorothea's life story about being an ambitious and talented woman born well ahead of her time, and the choices she made in order to provide for her children during the Great Depression is fascinating. Many times I found myself asking the question: Would she have been judged so harshly for her decisions if she were a man? Very well written... you will find yourself searching through the internet to see more of her amazing photography after you finish the book.

A fantastic novel. Elise Hooper brings Dorothea Lange to life in this fictionalized account of her life. I loved reading about the transition in Lange's photography from photographing society women to documenting conditions during the Depression and World War II Internement Camps. By including all the information about Lange's friends, marriages and struggles with her children, Hooper shows the complexities of Lange's life and how it contributed to her photography

I loved this novel. It is so well written. It beautifully captured the incredible difficulties of the 30's and 40's in America, the tensions for a woman between her career and her family, and the tensions for an artist between creating art and making it a career/job. I am so fascinated by Lange's life and her commitment to social justice and change. I am so thankful for the unique window she has given us into the behind-the-scenes of the depression, dust bowl, internment camps, etc. What a gift to our understanding of the beauty and brokenness of our history as a nation. I look forward Hooper's next novel, and am hoping she continues to focus on the lives of women.

I purchased this book for a book club. I trusted the organizer so thought I'd give it shot. Once I started it I couldn't put it down. It is clear the author did so much homework on this. The details are amazing. Her writing style kept me engrossed in the story. I was intrigued about the lead characters interactions with other famous art figures from Ansel Adams to Frida Kahlo and events. What an amazing woman. I met the author at the book club. She was amazing to listen to so now I need to go and read more of her previous work and am so looking forward to whatever else she puts out!!!!

Elise Hooper has a way with words! She has a way of writing that can grab you in and make you feel like part of the story. Her passion combined with knowledge and research truly has made for another amazing read by her!

I loved reading a novel based on Dorothea Lange's life, in which I learned she helped rear not only her own two sons but three of her second husband's children. I also had no idea how much her health impacted her life nor that she passed before her iconic retrospective at MOMA. Definitely worth a read or listen.

I loved the history of San Francisco and the dust bowl era through digging into the lives of the characters. The authors writing style makes it all seem very real

Interesting, easy read. Captivated the time period. Thought the ending was abrupt. Wanted to know if she got to finish her exhibit for MoMA.
