I'm not sure why I put off reading the 'Into the Wilderness' series for so long, but it certainly is making my summer reading more enjoyable. What's not to love about this series? It has amazing, colorful characters, plenty of action, history, romance, humor....I love it.'Dawn on a Distant Shore' is book 2 in the series. The Bonners and friends are headed off to Canada, and subsequently to Scotland by hook and by crook against their will. LIke book 1, this installment is difficult to put down. The only thing you know is that nothing will ever go as planned.I was sorry to see one of my favorite characters was killed off.

I loved into the Wilderness and could not wait to read this sequel. I could have done without this book. I do not think anything would be lost by skipping this one. Other than young Jennet, the new recurring characters introduced were named but not developed until later in the series. The sea voyages were too long and drawn out. The end was disappointing. By the time we were presented with the real reason the Earl of Carryck had an entire family (including 2 infants), that it was a let down. There were too many side trips that added little or nothing to the story except more pages to get through. One of my most favorite characters died, and, aside from the aforementioned Jennet, none of the Scottish characters were likeable enough or developed enough for me to care about their situation. The cameo by Robert Burns was pretty good, but I would rather have met some members of wee Iona's Fraser clan or maybe some of Cora's relatives. Cora Munro is probably my all time favorite American literary heroine. I was sorry to find that she had died before Nathaniel and Elizabeth's story started, but it turned out I have not missed her as much as I thought I would. Her spirit and intelligence have been kept alive through the memories of her family. It would have have been interesting, though, for Hannah, who has so much pride in her Mohawk family,to meet some of Granny Cora's Scottish kinsmen. Here was a missed opportunity for her to learn about a few generations of her Scottish(white) ancestors, to learn about Cora was like as a young girl. What might have happened if an off-handed remark or off-color joke were made at Cora's expense within the hearing of the Bonners? Would Hawkeye or Robbie would have gotten to the lout(s) first? A missed opportunity to enrich the Bonner family dynamic for generations to come. However, this was not explored.Neither were the characters of Luke, wee Iona or even the earl. Even Giselle's character was lacking for me. I know the person she was during this story was not a nice woman, but I was not clear whether I was supposed to feel sympathy for her or not? At times the narration seemed to say she had always been like this. At other times it seemed to indicate that she was not this bad before her relationship with Nathaniel.Muddy underdeveloped characters. Too much attention paid to less important plot lines and not enough paid to the main one to make me able to sympathize with a man who was supposedly at his core a good man. It looks like this is the only less than great book in the series, though. I am glad I went on to Lake in the Clouds and Fire Along the Sky.

...and so this second installment of the "Wilderness Series" begins with a bang - - sharp interest focused on Elizabeth deep in the throes of giving birth with only 9 yr. old Hannah to assist. Many Doves and Falling Day are away. Nathaniel is blizzard stranded at the Tavern in Paradise, unable to get home. Raging excitement! This Saga takes on the flavor of the"Outlander" Saga, albeit mildly, but never once reaches the intensity or propensity of that phenomenal series - - therefore IMHO should never be compared to that Epic except in the similarities of late 18th century wilderness adventure and the struggle and survival of a family in the wilderness. In no time at all, the larger picture and new problems facing the Bonner family (of this installment) makes itself known in the form of Hawkeye, Nathaniel and Robbie MacLachlan being held in a Montreal gaol, falsely accused of spying. Elizabeth, being the wonderfully strong and willfully determined woman that she is, is soon off to Montreal with her babies, Hannah, Curiosity, Runs from Bears and her cousin, Will Spencer in tow - - to try to save Nathaniel, Robbie and her father-in-law from the gallows.Even though this segment of this series sometimes became tedious (for me)...what with all the seemingly never ending traveling details etc., I still found this second installment extremely exciting and entertaining. Ms. Donati stays true to the era and the history of this time; adding her own fictional flavor and blending it well. It quickly became obvious (to me) that Hannah was going to be the focus on the third installment, which saddens me because I (like multitudes of other readers), am attached to intense and commanding Hawkeye, patient, consuming and strong Nathaniel and of course, plucky, feisty and precise Elizabeth. They ARE the story!Nevertheless I understand (albeit grudgingly) that we will read less and less of our beloved Elizabeth and Nathaniel as time progresses and they take second place to the upcoming characters. Obviously, Hannah and all that she will be facing as a half-breed woman with the desire to be a Dr in the 19th century, will be the new center character, I'm sure.I adore Curiosity, Robbie and Aunt Merriweather. Who wouldn't?? Such profound and endearingly strong supporting characters that I've grown so quickly to love.Brava Ms. Donati!!

This book continues the story of the Bonner family. I love the characters, especially Hannah who lives and two worlds and develops skills as a healer. I also really liked how much time Elizabeth spent nursing twins. I have read books where caring for a newborn hardly hampers the heroine. Elizabeth is a busy woman, but she is also tied to the needs of her children in a way that rings true. I found some of the action and the way the family gets to England to be a little farfetched, but it is a book, and excitement is expected, so I can forgive the stretch. I definitely plan to read the next book in the series.

I LOVE this series and the 2nd bk did not disappoint. It was packed with twists and turns and complex, well written characters. The relationship between Elizabeth and Nathaniel grabs at the heart. Their love cannot be broken...nor their family’s bond. I am wishing for my own Lake in the Clouds to come home to after a long journey....
