A Beautiful Beginning:I barely know where to start! I don’t know how to start! This book was spectacular; as a story in and of itself and in addition to being an introduction to the series to come. The MC – our heroine, Harper, is likable, smart, compassionate, strong, by no means perfect and perfectly aware of it so she also has this seam of insecurity and this questioning of herself that makes her satisfyingly normal and relatable. You know, for a chick with more power in her little finger than I will ever hope to command in my life. And I enjoyed the fact that every character was so clearly written, that even if you weren’t sure how they were exactly going to play out in the bigger picture, you still got that sense of them – you know, the one you get IRL when you meet people and you just kinda vibe as to whether you feel good about them or not? Something like that. So, while I was reading, I might not have known why I got a feeling about someone immediately but I knew I had one and I knew I could trust it. Even with the characters that didn’t get a lot of live page time in this book… I knew how I felt about them and I liked that because it contributed to a very immersive experience. And there are definitely some that I hope we will see and get to know better because they make Harper better and I love their energy. (HINT!)Overall, the book is so luxuriously written, especially in terms of the beautifully scenic descriptions that creates the imagery perfectly in your mind. Ms. Lawson has a great talent for writing a moving landscape that invites you to escape while you absorb her words. Also, the fictional history is so rich and creatively fascinating that I found myself entirely captivated by not just the present world that was created, but also by what had come before to get it to that point. There must be so much more coming to learn about and it is my deepest hope that now that that bar has been reached in such a marvelous way, that it will continue as it has begun and that the epic storytelling will not fade as other elements are added. The plot lines and twists – oh you gorgeous little fiends! This one ends on a cliffy, which is largely to be expected since it’s Numero Uno, but, I was satisfied that there was enough… uhm… other resolution, to balance that out – not balance it out quite nicely, mind you, because it’s still a darn cliffy… but my greedy soul has been momentarily appeased. And between you and I… I get the feeling that the surprises and shocks yet to come are going to blow our socks off. Because when I consider the possibilities of the future “what if’s” … it sets my mind racing and I feel very strongly, as though we’re going to have to hold on tight for what’s coming.I feel like right now we have expectations and we have some ideas that say “I bet… “, but the only thing that I will bet is that there are going to be some very definite “WTF, I did not see that coming!” moments in the books to come.I can’t freaking wait!

Of Wolves and Witches by ELENA LAWSON was a fantastic read about magic, attraction, bonds, mystery, conspiracy to commit murder, hiding the truth, and learning about ones origins. Come meet Harper and ride with her on her exciting journey of self discovery. She meets friends (Bianca), and a possible love interest she feels a connection to (Elias). I really enjoyed this book! I fell in love with the characters and story. I totally recommend this book to all who love the supernatural genre.

I bought this book on preorder based on the blurb alone. Fortunately, the narrative lived up to the promise, weaving a new world with familiar characters and fresh mythos.Pros:- harper’s growth is apparent from beginning to end.- great world building.- well editedCons:- Cliffhanger

Of Wolves and Witches had an interesting storyline, but I wish there had been more character relationship development to go with the great plot. Nice pacing, which kept me interested in what would happen next, but I would have enjoyed more depth, rather than the attraction(s) based solely on looks.

OMG...this book is amazing. I read it all in one sitting. And when the book ended I literally yelled out 'NOOOOOO' cause I wanted to continue reading. I cannot wait for book two. If you love academy books and love reading the drama that unfolds this is the book for you.

Stories follows a witch who goes to an academy completely loved it from start to finish finish the book in one sitting couldn't believe how it ended really left me wanting a whole lot more cannot wait for book 2 to come out

An exciting opening hooks you in and the rest keeps you hooked. A great story with plenty of secrets, intrigue, and potential for great romance. The cliffhanger ending has me begging for more!

It needs a lot of work. Character development. Plot development. World building. All of it. It reads like a very bad rough first draft.

3001: The Final Odyssey, by Arthur C. Clarke

From Library Journal

In this fourth and final book in a 30-year publishing odyssey (following 2001, 2010, and 2061), 2001 astronaut Frank Poole, presumed dead and adrift in deep space near Jupiter, is recovered alive in the year 3001. Intent on saving humanity, he returns to Jupiter's satellite, Europa, to contact partner Dave Bowman, whose mind has become absorbed by a third monolith. Unfortunately, Clarke uses this book as a vehicle to showcase scientific ideas and breakthroughs at the expense of the story, spending too much time catching up Poole on what he's missed in the last 1000 years while failing to develop fully the current situation and rushing the conclusion. Recommended only to complete the quartet.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

#657,199 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I almost didn't buy this book (even on sale for $1.99) because the reviews were so bad. But since I really liked the other 2 sequels, I figured I'd give it a shot. Having read it, this book is now right behind "2001" as one of my favorites of Arthur C. Clarke! It actually has a little character development (a rarity for Mr. Clarke) and completely follows the events of "2001". I think it nearly makes "2010" and "2061" completely irrelevant, partly due to retreading of the main plots points from each book, and because it maintains focus on the elements of the original. "2010" and "2061" are certainly worth reading, but they only follow "2001" in sequential time. The character focus shifts and there's not much added to the Monolith discoveries in either book. "2010" has a fairly major event involving the Monoliths, but "3001" sums that up in a chapter or two without leaving anything important out.As far as the ending "ruining the series", I disagree. This book (as with most of Mr. Clarke's novels) does not wrap everything up in a tight bow. Rather, it ends the immediate worry of what the Monoliths are "really up to", and gives the human race some breathing room. I also really enjoyed the ride of this book in discovering human life in the 31st century. My only real leap in logic is the fact that Frank Poole could have ever existed to tell his story. But he is a nice central figure to have around, so I can let that go :)

In this volume Clarke went into reverse: it was not an adventure into the unknown but an adventure into too much known. It pretty much tries to give us an idea that maybe, despite dreaming of it, we might not be really fit to live in the real distant future. In some respects the limitations and reveal of the monolith are somewhat disappointing. On the other hand it brings it back to our own universe, where technological advancement does not make you a God.While not well received as the rest of the series it is surely worth the read.

Though it felt a little different to its predecessors, it was an interesting, albeit short ending to the saga.I feel a little wrong complaining about a dead author but I was rather disappointed that, yet again, he copied entire chapters from previous books; three in this one, one of which had already been repeated in book 3! I'm surprised at him for that. There were also a couple of inconsistencies with previous books as though Clarke had forgotten details.Nevertheless, it was an unexpected twist to the story and left me wanting more. I was very glad to read recently that books 3 and 4 are being made into films.Recommended.

Really enjoyed this final chapter in Arthur C. Clarke's vision of what might have transpired in our development and evolution. Although it is not the creation story that much of us might embrace, it is always interesting to read what different possibilities might have lead to our existence. As a Sci-Fi buff, it did leave me wishing that there was an effort for some writer or director to come forward in putting together the story of 2061 and 3001 in some version of a motion picture so as to complete the story of Hal, David Bowman, and Frank Poole to a close visually for the many fans of this Arthur C. Clarke saga.

When I was 15 I went to the theater and watched 2001. Blew me away, not to mention inspiring me in the years to come as an author myself. I have just finished reading 3001 and I must say that Mr. Clarke has put the perfect spin to the odyssey, as we follow Frank Poole and Dave Bowman through yet another amazing story, and one that ends with the fate of Earth and humanity, in their hands. Wonderful story. It leaves the door open for a follow up, but without Arthur C. Clarke around to pen it, I don't know that anyone could do it justice; so we may have to live with the conclusion of 3001 - one that doesn't disappoint, but certainly leaves one yearning for a life continuum.

The series started off well and it was a good concept and story in the first book 2001. But there was too much bouncing around in the plot and the characters were not well developed, but I figured that was his style and he didn't want to get bogged down with any single character, but was probably looking at the big picture as well as the extraordinary events that were going on in real life at that time.As I read the series I felt that each book was worse than the one before, and the series simply deteriorated. I only kept on reading the series because the original book and movie 2001 had been such a phenomenon when they first came out, and I wanted to see if he would explain so many of the open ended issues from 2001.Near the middle of 3001 it seemed to me that it was a different person that wrote 2001 versus 3001. I do not consider repeating entire sections of previous books as good writing. Referencing previous events yes, but not re-writing each section word for word just to fill in the book. Maybe 2061 and 3001 were originally intended to be one book but if he had two books it meant more book sales.

Almost anti-climactic. The monolith is revealed, advances in data storage and processing frees humans drastically. Space elevators are the norm, and the solar system is a resource. A nice conclusion to the series with many predictions revealed by Clarke.

I first read this book when in the late 90's. I was blown away by it at the time, but that was about 15 years ago and I have become a little more jaded since then. It's an interesting piece of speculative fiction, and it calls into light a lot of interesting topics about society as a whole. However, overall I felt that it was a little shallower than I liked and I occasionally got the feeling that Clarke was sort of phoning it in for a few chapters just to get the book done.Still, a good read, and decent closure for the 2001/HAL universe. RIP Clarke, you will be missed. I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. Giving it 3 stars feels too low and 4 stars seems too high.

I created my LinkedIn profile several years ago. Since then they have made a lot of changes. This book did a great job of helping me improve my profile and explore the new areas of LinkedIn that I didn't even know existed. Since reading this a week ago I have had more quality business interactions on LinkedIn than I have had in the last 2 years.

As a career counselor, I was hoping this would provide more information I did not know in a simple format. Perhaps for a beginner, this is a good starting point. There are plenty of free tutorials and videos online that buying a book was not value-added in my situation.

The author uses clear and concise writing style to communicate useful information. He stays on topic. There's no flowery fluff - just practical information. If you want to quickly and efficiently use LinkedIn to interact with other professionals, then read this book and follow the steps.

This is an excellent guide to LinkedIn and offers great tips and tricks for using the system and creating a compelling profile! As someone who uses LinkedIn almost every day, I even learned a few new things!

Love LinkedIn picked up this book to inspire others unfamiliar with this social network.

Just what I wanted at a good price. Quick ship.

comprehensive description of best practices in social media

Big help. Linked in increased web site traffic by 35%. I would not have known how to do that without this book.

From the Author

I wrote "A Story of Lawyers™" to educate children of all ages (but specifically my nieces and nephews) about the work lawyers do, to honor those who admirably serve our wonderful profession, and to help improve public perceptions. It was inspired by attorneys who have played a significant role in my professional development and life, and includes illustrated likenesses of a few of my closest colleagues and friends. It also includes a rendering of the Stetson law campus, my alma mater, and the recently revised Oath of Admission for The Florida Bar. This book is the first of a series I plan to release.  The second book, "A Story of Lawyers ™ with Views from the Bench", is set for release in early March 2013.  "A Story of Lawyers™" is a tribute to attorneys and an ideal platform for what is quickly developing into a national campaign of lawyer goodwill. The books convey a positive message with a gentle rhyme and rhythm, and feature delightfully detailed illustrations by artist Klaus Shmidheiser.  In addition to lawyers, my books are a perfect gift for clients, staff, family, friends, teachers, and anyone who has an interest in attorneys or the profession. I hope you love our story as much as I do! Read! Share! Enjoy!          Â

my 10 yr old daughter loved it

My husband and I are both lawyers and this is a wonderful book to help explain the definition of lawyer. It is well illustrated and the right length for children. It is best for kids ages probably 5 or 6 and up (though my daughter is 3 and she enjoyed it).

Written in a warm, friendly, educational tone in pleasing rhyme, this is a great book to read aloud to your children, grandchildren or young students. The author's passion for her profession clearly shines through in her tribute to lawyers and all that they do. Perfect for those with a lawyer in the family, or those interested in learning more about the profession. Beautifully illustrated -- I highly recommend to Read, Share and Enjoy!

Finally, a story the explains what lawyers do in a way that kids of all ages can understand. From judges to trial lawyers to transactional lawyers, kids will have fun learning about all of the different things that lawyers do in their careers. The illustrations are wonderful and the book is suitable for all ages. If you are a lawyer or know a lawyer, this book will be a good teaching tool for kids and you likely will learn something, too!

This book is great for children and adults! While children will enjoy the rhyming and the illustrations, adults will appreciate the information about the legal profession. A great gift for the lawyer in your family or for kids who want to know what 'mommy and daddy do at work all day.' This book also achieves what the author wanted; to subjugate the negative stereotypes that lawyers have.

This book is a good resource to explain the legal field. It's written in a fun rhyme style, similar to Dr. Suess, that kids enjoy participating in. Can be very helpful if you are going through any legal issues to explain to children.

Not worth paying $5 to ship it back, but just a warning to other conservatives buying this book, the second to last page which highlights presidents also prominently features Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama and their respective law degrees. I bought this book for my children to help them understand my career, and what being a lawyer entails should they decide to follow in my footsteps. I do not think two democratic first wives with law degrees, one of which may or may not be criminally indicted, should be featured with our nation's greatest leaders. If the author is wanting to feature strong female leaders with law degrees, there are many others out there that stand on their own, both democrat and republican. If this two page spread was different, or if I was not the strong conservative I am, this book would be very good. As is, fellow conservatives should avoid. Instead of reading to my children, this will go in the waiting room of my law office.

Great little book that portrays lawyers in a positive way for a change. One that your child or grandchild will cherish if you are a lawyer or not.

While preparing this review, I had to do just as I did while reading the novel – take breaks to let my emotions subside so I could see to read (or write), for a lot of emotions came to the fore. By the way, I strongly recommend adding the Audible Edition to your library at the reduced price of $9.47.Firstly, due to my own personal circumstances. My father, not long before he passed on eight years ago, had urged me to read and study Nicholas Sparks’s style of writing. Dad was not moved by many authors, so I noted that, but did not then do as he urged. In just the introduction to the novel, I quickly understood why Dad was so moved. Also, though, my first marriage was a story not so very different, in the essential ways, from the true story behind the novel. I, too, spent time in Africa (Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and I am convinced I shall one day return to that magical, awe-inspiring land). That employment in southern Africa became the beginning of the end of my first marriage, one of the consequences you pay while trying to deal with day-to-day challenges.Of course, had I not gone to Africa, thence, years later, to Egypt, I might never have suffered the divorce but would not have then discovered my wife of today, who is the Godsend that brought me back from the dead and failed. My point is, “Every Breath” by Nicholas Sparks opened up some old wounds BUT also healed them shut. For me, this story was epic. A life changer.BLUSH FACTOR: This love story is absent any profanities, but the love scenes, while drawing a clear, unmistakable picture, are not graphic in the sense of more risqué novels. Tantalizing? Yes, but not over-the-top graphic. Read first before deciding to read to anybody else, is the best advice I can give. Wonderful images beautifully written is another way to put it.ADVENTURE: There IS a definite sense of adventure.SOUL: Yes.CHARACTER OR VOICE: It is magical how this writer can open the story up to let it speak for itself.EDITING FOR GRAMMAR AND TYPOS: Professional editing of the highest order.THE WRITING FLOW & STYLE: I think it’s clear that this writer is moving in his narrative.POV: Third person, which works well for this story. We get to feel the emotions of the main characters so effectively due to the way point of view is used in this work.EXCERPT‘…time, she’d believed her dad to be the smartest man in the world. When she would tell him that, he’d always laugh and say that if that were true, then he would have figured out a way to earn a million dollars. Her mom was a teacher, too—second grade—and it wasn’t until Hope graduated from college and began paying her own bills that she realized how much of a financial challenge it must have been for them to raise a family, even on their combined income. Her dad had been a coach to the high school’s cross country and track teams as well. He never raised his voice, but nonetheless led his teams to numerous conference championships. Along with her sisters, Hope had participated in both sports all four years of high school, and though none of them were stars, Hope still jogged a few times a week. Her older sisters ran three or four days a week, and for the past ten years, Hope had joined her dad and her sisters at the annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, all of them working up an appetite before sitting down at the table. Two years earlier, her dad had won his age-group bracket. But now, her dad would never run again. It had started with occasional twitches and a slight, if noticeable, fatigue. For how long, she wasn’t exactly sure, but she guessed that it had been a couple of years. In the twelve months after that, the runs in the woods became jogs, and then finally walks.Old age, his internist suggested, and it made sense. By then, her dad was in his late sixties—he’d retired four years earlier—and he had arthritis in his hips and feet. Despite a life of exercise, he took medication for slightly elevated blood pressure. Then, last January, he’d caught a cold. It was a normal, run-of-the-mill cold, but after a few weeks, her dad had still found it harder to breathe than usual.Hope had gone with him to another appointment with his internist. More tests were done. Blood work was sent to the labs. He was referred to another doctor, then another. A muscle biopsy was taken, and when the results came back, there was the suggestion of a potential neurological problem. It was at that point that Hope began to worry. More tests followed, and later, Hope sat with the rest of her family as the diagnosis of…’Sparks, Nicholas. Every Breath (Kindle Locations 465-481). Grand Central Publishing. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINELife-altering story for me. Only one rating makes sense. If I ever could pen a story 10% as engaging as this, I would be quite pleased that I had accomplished a great deal.Five stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. Gone are the days of amazing Nicholas Sparks; The Notebook, The Wedding, Message in a Bottle....where has that author gone? Everytime a new novel comes out, I rush out to buy it, hoping to be blown away.. Nick Sparks disappointed me once again, boring and predictable..

I have always loved Nicholas Sparks' books. I have read them all and they have each made me cry, feel different emotions, and wish the books would never end. This book made my heart hurt and burst! The power of knowing that this love story is true and really out there and the pool of love can come together through anything. At the end knowing Hope's secret devastated me but in the same breath made me feel that Tru is her real love. I am in awe as to how Sparks could write their story with his own words and capture how they had to have been feeling so Well! This is a must read, I have told friends and my sister to read it with a glass of wine and tissues! Loved this book so very much!

Every Breath seriously needs an editor. There is so much “tell” and not enough “show” that the story moves at a glacial pace, compounded by an overreliance on long inner monologues. I grabbed Every Breath on a whim because my sister-in-law raves about The Notebook. I had not read any books by Nicholas Sparks nor seen any movie made from his books, but I like a good romance. Every Breath came up as #1 on Amazon under Clean & Wholesome Romance. I was a bit surprised when I hit a sex scene at 47%. Now, normally this wouldn’t bother me, but here I am about halfway through the book and almost nothing has happened. At all.To be fair, there was a little action. A man drove to the airport and thought of the danger it would be if it were night. He flew to the US. A lady visited her parents’ cottage by the shore. They met on the beach. They met at a restaurant. They talked a bit. They inhabited slow scenes with lots of inner monologues, lots of descriptions, and virtually no action. Finally something happened! These two people who have known each other about two days, I think (sorry, lost track with all the inner ramblings), are now madly in love and jumping into bed. I think he ate some olives in there somewhere. Did they eat their dinner that she was chopping veggies for? I was so bored I can't remember. The woman is trying to assess her six-year relationship with the man she loves because he’s so perfect; she intends to marry him and have the children she’s been yearning for as soon as they get over this rough spot in their relationship. The man she’s just met has no intentions of ever marrying, is sterile and can’t have kids, is a lone wolf who loves his solitary life with the exception of missing his son (begotten before he was sterile, sorry for any confusion there). And suddenly these two acquaintances know that they are deeply in love with each other. They knew upon seeing each other (she’s beautiful; his butt looks nice in tight jeans) how incredible their connection is. They share a few stories and a dinner and are now presumably rocking toward happily ever after. Or at least, the bedroom.Something must happen in the last half of the book, but I don’t really care. I’m so bored and irritated with the overkill on inner monologues, the plodding pace, plus the hackneyed instalove cliché, that my eye rolls gave me a headache. (Confession: it was the frustration with the story that gave me the headache, not the eye rolling.) Every Breath is a DNF for me.ETA: Another reviewer said they read the entire book and in the author note at the end, Nicholas Sparks admits the entire premise of the book is a lie. The book is NOT based on a true story. That's despicable, imo. Before buying the book, I read the intro as part of the sample, I double-checked that that the author had signed and dated the intro, just as authors do for true introductory notes, and I had checked that the Kindred Spirit mailbox is real (it is). I did all that because I wanted to make sure it was based on a true story before I read it. That premise drew me to the book. To find out the whole intro is a dramatic fabrication, a literary device, makes me glad that I didn't finish the book and find that at the end. Nicholas Sparks deliberately played and manipulated us readers with that intro. Not cool.

I thought I would really enjoy this book. It started out strong and I was hooked by the idea that somewhere out there someone was living this story. Then it started to feel more like a predictable romance novel. When I finished I just felt cheated. Mr Sparks begins the story stating it is based on a true life experience. At the end he explains it was just a literary device he had been wanting to use. Really? Part of the allure to the story was thinking this was an actual real living story.I think I'm done with Nicholas Spark books.

Typically like his books but this one was just plain blah. Too predictable, too many paragraphs, pages spent on the physical intimacy of the characters. I almost didn’t finish this but figured I had spent a few hours reading and decided to push through it. I did enjoy descriptions of the scenery though.

Amazon.com Review

Virginia Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta has a bloody puzzle on her hands: five headless, limbless cadavers in Ireland, plus four similar victims in a landfill back home. Is a serial butcher loose in Virginia? That's what the panicked public thinks, thanks to a local TV reporter who got the leaked news from her boyfriend, Scarpetta's vile rival, Investigator Percy Ring. But the butchered bodies are so many red herrings intended to throw idiots like Ring off the track. Instead of a run-of-the-mill serial killer, we're dealing with a shadowy figure who has plans involving mutant smallpox, mass murder, and messing with Scarpetta's mind by e-mailing her gory photos of the murder scenes, along with cryptic AOL chat-room messages. The coolest innovation: Scarpetta's gorgeous genius niece, Lucy, equips her with a DataGlove and a VPL Eyephone, and she takes a creepy virtual tour of the e-mailed crime scene. Unnatural Exposure boasts brisk storytelling, crackling dialogue, evocative prose about forensic-science sleuthing, and crisp character sketches, both of familiar characters like Scarpetta's gruff partner Pete Marino and bit players like the landfill employee falsely accused by Ring. Plus, let's face it: serial killers are old hat. Cornwell's most vivid villains are highly plausible backstabbing colleagues like Ring, who plots to destroy Lucy's FBI career by outing her as a lesbian. Some readers object to the rather abrupt ending, but, hey, it's less jarring than Hannibal's, and it's the logical culmination of Cornwell's philosophy about human nature. To illuminate the novel's finale, read Cornwell's remarks on paranoia in her Amazon.com interview. --Tim Appelo

I haven't read any Patricia Cornwell books in quite a while. This one was on sale and I hadn't read it. Maybe I'm no longer into her style or maybe this is not one of the best Scarpetta books. But the story seemed to drag. Besides the sale price, what attracted me was the viral danger that she and others were in. That's a terrific premise for a suspense writer whose main character is a forensic doctor. But somehow, it never got as tense as I expected. Too technical and too drawn out, it ended with a solution that seemed pulled out of a hat. Not like the Cornwell Kay Scarpetta books I remember.

Another great mystery for the doctor. I'm glad she finally got over Mark and realized Benton was the one! Her stories are full of things most of us would never know.

My favorite author of all time! Great suspense in this particular book, keeps you hooked till the end. Bonus epilogue!!

Always great to read a great mystery. Police procedure and medical examiner entertainment. This mystery also includes nice Lucy and lover Benton FBI.

This is the first Cornwell novel I have read. Very well executed and a very quick read. Obviously this being book 8 of the series there were references to characters and situations I didn't fully comprehend but it was still self contained enough to enjoy. I definitely read her more.

The book begins with a dead body found in a landfill who has particular spots that look like smallpox. People died. But Kay , in the end found that a college and friend had produced this pox but it did not continue to pass as this college had hoped and Scarpetta found this person and solved the situation.

I’ve been a fan Kay Scarlett’s series for many years. I enjoyed this read I particular because besides being a well written book. The other context I appreciated it is that smallpox is the only disease to be eradicated. Polio will be on that list I just a few more years. Besides being interesting it was relevant.

If you like Scarpetta you will enjoy this. If you like medical mysteries you will find this easy to follow. I enjoy them both, but I must say that this one dragged a bit at the beginning, but towards the end it picked up nicely and ended with justice served.

I enjoyed this work but obviously it has been totally discredited, which is such a shame. I am not sure how you think you can get away with writing a book about such an otherwise well documented topic that is sheer and utter nonsense, but there are surely psychopaths among us who appear completely normal.

I am a big Bill Bryson fan, I often say that the guy can write about anything and make it interesting. This book is an exception to that rule.Although Amazon lists a 2015 publication date for the Kindle edition, this is clearly a much older book (most of the references and examples seem to be no more recent than the mid-80s) and seems to be one of Bryson's earliest publications. It lacks his usual superior scholarship combined with wit and clarity. I am not a linguistic expert as some reviewers here, but even I can detect that a lot of this is oversimplified, apocryphal, or simply wrong. Much of the book follows a pattern of making a statement about some foible of English followed by a long (often repetitive) list of examples. This does not really add up to either enlightenment or entertainment. It would be a good subject for Bryson to revisit with a more rigorous and accurate approach.

I like Bryson's easy, breezy writing and love languages, so I expected to really enjoy this book and at first I did. I was dazzled by Bryson's erudition. Until I got to the one language that I know something about, Classical Chinese. In one paragraph, he slaughtered the truth. I'll give you just two examples. He said that people today could read the Chinese of 2,500 years ago. Not true. Contemporary and Classical Chinese are far more different than Latin and modern Italian, and that was true even before the Communists simplified the characters in the 60's. He also said that using a Chinese/English dictionary was a joke. After looking up a word by its radical (roughly, root), all of the thousands of entries for characters using that radical were just thrown in at random. Again, flatly untrue. They are entered in the order of the number of strokes used to write them. That still doesn't make it easy to find a word in a Chinese/English dictionary, but they aren't put together by clowns, either. In his bibliography, Bryson cites one work on Chinese, "Chinese for Beginners" by Dianne Wolff. I have been such a fan of Bryson's that I dared to hope that the mistakes were hers, so I ordered the book. Alas, her work is completely accurate. Bryson, either because he couldn't be bothered to actually read her book or just because he thought it was more entertaining his way, is totally responsible for his false statements. I do recognize that Classical Chinese is an obscure language, and who cares, right? But if he could be completely, 100 percent wrong about one language, what's to give us confidence he's right about any of them? I'm not saying he's dishonest, but I am saying I wouldn't set out on a walking tour of England using "The Road to Little Dribbling" as a guide unless I were comfortable with the risk I'd find myself walking through, say, Albania instead.

I was in a debate with my wife's 92 year old grandfather about how silly English is as a language and that for non native speakers it is one of the hardest languages to learn. He, being a man who speaks many languages and was in the foreign service, said I was crazy. The next day a visitor to the house mentioned this very book when she heard about our disagreement.I immediately purchased it and haven't regretted it once. This book is full of fun facts about English but also really does examine the ridiculous nature of the language from a linguistics point of view. That last part is surprising because he is not in fact a linguist! It is light hearted fun but you will learn many things that you can impress your friends, or 92 year old grandfathers.

I loved this book. Not only is Mr. Bryson an amusing writer, but it's so full of interesting and entertaining facts that a topic which under other circumstances could have been quite dull turned out to be a page-turner. For years, I've heard about what an amazing language English is, and this lays it out in all its glory, from words we've borrowed from the Romans (not many) to when England could have adopted the French language thanks to the Normans, or that certain Anglo-Saxon words are still in common use today. I also wasn't aware that Shakespeare had coined more than 1,500 words on his own, that "okay" first appeared in print in 1837, or that certain members of the Founding generation thought a new country might need a new language. I'm quite certain my husband got tired of hearing about all the interesting things I learned, but I will never look at English in quite the same way again
