Applied Spatial Data Analysis with R, Second Edition, is divided into two basic parts, the first presenting R packages, functions, classes and methods for handling spatial data. This part is of interest to users who need to access and visualise spatial data. Data import and export for many file formats for spatial data are covered in detail, as is the interface between R and the open source GRASS GIS and the handling of spatio-temporal data. The second part showcases more specialised kinds of spatial data analysis, including spatial point pattern analysis, interpolation and geostatistics, areal data analysis and disease mapping. The coverage of methods of spatial data analysis ranges from standard techniques to new developments, and the examples used are largely taken from the spatial statistics literature. All the examples can be run using R contributed packages available from the CRAN website, with code and additional data sets from the book's own website. Compared to the first edition, the second edition covers the more systematic approach towards handling spatial data in R, as well as a number of important and widely used CRAN packages that have appeared since the first edition. This book will be of interest to researchers who intend to use R to handle, visualise, and analyse spatial data. This is not a book for a beginner, but is an excellent book for two groups of readers: those who have some background with R and wish to learn about its capabilities for spatial statistics; and those with some background in spatial statistics who wish to learn how to use R. The authors have been the main developers of the spatial statistics packages on R, and therefore know the packages intimately. But the authors also have a deep knowledge of the spatial statistics literature, and I found myself learning something new about these methods in every chapter. Everyone serious about spatial statistics should see what R has to offer. This book is the easiest way to do that.

This book fills a gap in the Spatial Statistics literature. Most of the treatises are heavy on the math, and I find it difficult to bridge the gap between the formulas and applying them. The modules for R take care of this for you and leave you to interpret the result. This book covers most of these modules and demonstrates how to use them. Really worth getting. There is also the ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis Vol 2, but it is more of an introductory text.

Difficult to read. Apparently it is available as a free ebook elsewhere! Ended up not really using it for my Geospatial Statistics course, but such is life.

Its a good book but does not provide enough background.

This is a great book that I refer to on a regular basis. There is a sufficient amount of math, so that users have some background on procedures. There is a great collection of examples with R code so that procedures can be easily implemented. Most of the procedures use standard frequentist methods, though there are a few examples of Bayesian analyses. Highly recommended for applied scientists who are comfortable with basic concepts of statistics, R, and GIS.

I was really excited when I ordered this book as it looked like the type of material I had been looking for for ages, but as it turns out I am mildly disappointed in it, primarily because I found the text somewhat hard to grasp and the code not particularly well explained. It is still a very good read though and certainly helped me enhance my knowledge of statistical analyses in R. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to examine spatial data in R, but there is a bit of homework to do to be able to understand how all the pieces fit together.

Easier to read than many other statistics books and very informative

I purchased this book for a professor in our department. I had purchased another book from GoodWell of Silicon Valley from another professor. Both professors were impressed with the quality of the used book and the price. The price was also a great find into todays market.

This is the best sauce cook book I ever owned which is very indispensable and useful. You don't have to buy a brand name sauce again. So economical when you have the ingredients in your pantry. Sometimes the Asian, and the European recipes- you may have to buy the key ingredient. There are 100 sauces that you can make, and gives brief food origin, history and clear and concise directions on making them.There are divided into categories from Asian, Butter Compound- Cold, Butter Sauces- Hot, Chutney and Relishes, Classic Sauces & Their Derivatives, Classic Sauce & Food Pairings, Cold Sauces, Dessert Sauces,Dipping Sauces, Essences,Foams and Espumas, Modern Sauces, Pasta Sauces, Quirky Characters, Reduction and Pan Sauces, Salsas, Thickeners. This is great of a chef who wants to expand their repertoire of recipes in their head, or a cook who is trying to expand their recipes book. This is probably a great introduction or primer who works as a saucier chef - responsible for making sauces and preps other ingredients to be made into a complete course, etcetera.

I love this book. It is clear, concise, helpful and organized. As a home cook it is a great tool to have everything in one place. I recommend it. I haven't found and flaws yet.

Great little book with a lot of recipes for different sauces easy to follow. I also got the vol.1 mortar and pestle and also like it but I think this one is better due to more content. If you are a foodie and like to experiment with food this book will get you on your way to try different old and new.

I bought all 6 of the books as a unit. After purchasing them and skimming through them, I was sadly disappointed with book 4, soups. There were numerous sentences that weren't finished, just blank spaces, and recipes that were only half printed...ingredients but no instructions. If I would've bought them individually, I would've returned it. Not sure what to do if only one book in a collection is messed up. Replacing it would be nice as I was looking forward to using all of them.

Great resource. One of the most extensive books on Sauces I have come across!

This book has every sauce known to mankind in it and a good description of it's origin and use. If it's not in this book you don't need it.

Over the last week, I’ve read Thomas Jay Oord’s latest book, The Uncontrolling Love of God:An Open and Relational Account of Providence. This book was much talked about and anticipated in 2015, and I was excited to finally read it during my break from work and seminary classes. It’s the latest and greatest thing in open and relational theology, a subject I have been researching and thinking about for a couple years now. In this book, Oord addresses the doctrine of God’s providence and its relationship to the problem of innocent suffering (theodicy).This is no small task, as innocent suffering is clearly the biggest challenge to the claim that Christians worship a God who is perfectly loving and good, yet all powerful. Everyone has struggled with this question to some extent: if God could prevent a tragedy, why didn’t God prevent it? Isn’t God morally culpable for not preventing something horrible that God could prevent? Oord outlines four main ways that Christians have tried to understand God’s role in allowing or preventing suffering:1. God ultimately is the cause of every event, whether good or bad. This model comes fairly close to divine determinism as it sees every event as ordained by God and under his complete control. Oord identifies this view with theologians such as John Calvin, Benjamin Warfield, and others especially in the Calvinist/Reformed tradition.2.God empowers and overpowers. This model suggests that God gives people and the rest of creation free will, though occasionally God overrides that free will to accomplish God’s plans. Oord suggests this is probably the most common view among most Christians in the pew today. Roger Olson and classical Arminian theology trends in this direction.3. God is voluntarily self-limited. In this framework, God could control everything, but voluntarily chooses not to. When God creates, God commits to allowing creation to be free and so allows creation to run its course, though God could choose to control it. This view is associated with thinkers such as John Polkinghorne and Philip Clayton, both major voices in the science and religion dialogue.4. God sustains as an impersonal force. This view is farther left of the self limiting model, for it denies God’s personal agency. God is the invisible, ultimate sustainer of all being, though this God does not act in the world in personal ways. This is the God/Ground of Being of thinkers such as Paul Tillich and various forms of “liberal” theology.All of these models, according to Oord, fail to adequately explain God’s relationship to the world in an ethically and scientifically credible manner. He points out what he sees as the shortcomings/failings of each of these positions and then counters with a fifth position that he calls “essential kenosis.” Drawing on the Christ hymn of Philippians 2:1-11, which describes Christ’s emptying of himself within the divine nature to take on a human body, Oord argues that this divine “kenosis” (self-emptying) is part of God’s essence (essential nature) so that God’s nature as self emptying love does not allow God to control the wills of creation any more than God is able to lie (Hebrews 6:18). God creates the world and gives it freedom to self-determine, and God cannot control it because that goes against the divine nature of self-emptying love. Oord writes, “The model of providence as essentially kenotic…portrays God’s self-limitation as involuntary. God’s nature of love logically precedes God’s sovereign will. This means that God’s self-limiting kenosis derives primarily from God’s eternal and unchanging nature of love and not from voluntary divine decisions. Because God’s nature is love, God always gives freedom, agency and self-organization to creatures, and God sustains the regularities of nature” (ebook location 1241).In the “real world,” this means that randomness is real. God does not directly cause all events, but that events, especially evil and tragedy occur as a result of creation’s freedom. This, Oord argues, comports well with what physicists and biologists are learning about events at the micro or quantum levels. Things happen outside of God’s control all of the time, but God is present in all events, calling all aspects of creation to their fullest and best potential, even though they may resist that call. (For those who are familiar with process thought, this is very similar to the idea of the divine lure calling all occasions to participation in the divine life. However, Oord distances himself from classic process thought in that he maintains a traditional view of God that affirms that God is personal and has agency in the world.) God does not coerce creation in the sense of overpowering its agency, but calls it to cooperate with God in a way that is good and beneficial. When creation and free creatures choose not to cooperate with God, evil occurs and God cannot be blamed for it.Oord uses this model to offer an account for how miracles can occur in the world. He defines a miracle as “an unusual and good event that occurs through God’s special action in relation to creation” (ebook location 2755). This model, thankfully does not deny the special action of God, nor does it require God to arbitrarily break God’s own “lawlike regularities in nature” (Oord’s term for natural laws) at certain times, and not at others. Since open and relational theology affirms that the nature of the future is not exhaustively foreknown by God as settles, but is comprised of possibilities, God works miracles by providing new possibilities for creatures to cooperate with.This book gave me quite a bit to think about. I found it to be incredibly understandable, probably more so than my review of it! The conclusion that God’s nature is uncontrolling love that does not allow God to override creation’s freedom is undoubtedly a very uncomfortable position for many to consider. However, I would recommend reading the book before dismissing it outright. Oord seems to adequately address many of the qualms we might have. He utilizes the Bible’s own account of divine action well and incorporates a healthy dose of philosophy and science.My only disappointment with the book is that it lacks a chapter on eschatology. One of the major (though unfounded, in my opinion) criticisms of open theology is that if the future is not definitively settled, then how can we trust that God will bring about the new heavens and new earth. Open theology typically affirms that God has settled some events and will not allow the world to self-destruct or run on endlessly, but will bring about a conclusion to history. It is process theology that does not hold to such an assurance. I’m sure Oord affirms that the final consummation is settled somehow, and I would be interested to see how he works that out in the paradigm of essential kenosis. Overall, it was a great and challenging book that offers a lot of practical resources to the question of suffering and God’s goodness.

I kind of speed read this book over three days, but I will be revisiting it often throughout this year. Thomas Oord presents a compelling understanding of providence and God's will in relation to the problem of evil. This view of providence, which he terms "essential kenosis", is also positioned as a kind of middle way between the different understandings of God's sovereignty. Oord's writing style is inviting and arguments convincing, and you can feel that he respects his readers. Before going to seminary to study for the ministry I graduated with a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology, so I appreciated the way current understandings of biology and physics are used in this book, which was able to speak to me in ways that few other theology books have. This being an academic book, Oord's also provides a wealth of other resources and books on related topics, such as openness theology. I look forward to mining these resources, as well as the many insights I gleaned from this book, in the coming months and years.

If you want to understand the delicate balance between God's power and human free will, read this book.Seriously. Oord has finally provided the solution to the problem of evil in the world, and provided the way forward regarding the age-old debate over divine sovereignty and free will.Using the love of God as seen in Jesus Christ as the guiding principle, Oord shows how God's love does not (indeed, cannot) control others. If it did, it would no longer be love.

This is a must read for anyone wrestling with questions of a good God and the challenge and problem of evil. Oord's book outlines his developing thought on God's uncontrolling love and what that means in terms of God's influence on our lives. Oord's thoughts may help you (as it has me), challenge your thinking (as it has me) and even cause you great angst and frustration, but his book will not you leave you untouched in some way. If you have read Sanders, Stott, Wright, you will know that there are many ideas and views. The question is does Oord's explanation fit a classic solution of Occam's razor? You will have to read the book to answer that question for yourself.For me, Oord ranks with Chesterton, Lewis, Capon, Wright, Yancey, and Boyd as writers that have empowered my journey towards a greater understanding of God's endless mercy and grace driven by His magnificent love. May Christ be praised.

About the Author

Matthieu Ricard received a PhD in molecular genetics from the Pasteur Institute in 1972 before departing his native France to study Buddhism in the Himalayas, eventually becoming a monk of the Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery in Nepal. Renowned also as a photographer and translator, he is the author of numerous previous books, including Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and Your World,  Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill, and, with his father, the late Jean-François Revel, The Monk and the Philosopher: A Father and Son Discuss the Meaning of Life. He dedicates all the income of his work to two hundred humanitarian projects run in the Himalaya by the organization he founded, Karuna-Shechen.

A sometimes uncomfortable but excellent book. I ordered this book because I like Matthieu Ricards teachings. A vegetarian a long time ago, I thought I'd read this and not be surprised by much. I was. I also commend the author on presenting the case for a vegan/vegetarian diet with lots of scientific reasoning and studies to back up claims. Knowing the amount of water it takes to produce a quarter pound of beef was astonishing.

This is a great book for vegans and vegetarians (unfortunately, the only folks who will read it). The 4th chapter(which explains how agribusiness works and the suffering of the animals and people working in the business) is a little tough to take.I think it is meant to be that way. All meat eaters should read this book so they know what they are supporting with their actions and money.I like the author's writing and have read a few of his books.

The best historical and moral account on the topic of animal welfare to date. This is a masterful piece of research, exhaustively documented by footnote and citation. Anyone who reads this and continues to participate in the perpetuation of animal cruelty, through the consumption of animal flesh and other "uses" must surely be lost in deep self deception. Thank you, Matthieu Ricard.

I've read many books over the years on this topic, but this one was a bit different. It is more scientifically-based, so many people may find it a bit dry to read, but it's so well researched and eye opening that I really think it's an important book. Some parts were difficult to read, simply because it made me want to cry reading about things that we humans do to animals around the world. While I didn't learn anything new regarding the meat industry, I did learn more about vivisection, bull fighting, and the wild/exotic animal trade, among other things. Ricard covers all angles, making a brilliant case for compassion for animals. There were many quotes that I liked from this book, with my favorite being: "Most of us are fond of animals, but our compassion stops at the edge of our plate." Two thumbs up for "A Plea for Animals..."!

Thoughtful, well-researched, articulate argument for the cessation of suffering of animals.

This book is so well written and such humanity shines through in every word. The research is extensive and if you still could do anything to harm animals after reading this, well, I would be amazed.

A must read for anyone who would like to know all the ways we justify our mistreatment of animals.

These books are a must when traveling in Italy. Instead of buying the larger Italy book, we bought the books on Florence & Tuscany, Rome, Venice, and Naples & the Amalfi Coast because I only wanted to carry the cities I needed during our two-week Italy adventure.I highly recommend the paper copy over the electronic version. We accidentally left our Florence and Tuscany book on the plane so I downloaded the electronic version to my Kindle. It was much easier to use the maps in the book to orientate ourselves.Ricks' books are full of useful information, "traveling like a local" tips, and historical insights. We coupled the books with his free App and audio guides and got so much more out of our trip than if we had winged it and only used advice from the hotels and travel agencies.Our biggest regret was not getting the books before we booked our trip. We definitely would have saved money and visited more sights if we had read them before booking.

I bought the Florence/Tuscany guide and the Rome Guide for my first trip to Italy in 2018. I had bought guide books from other publishers the preceeding month for Ireland, but I didn't like them nearly as much as the Rick Steve's guides. The maps and walking tours alone are worth the price of the book, but the information contained within these pages literally saved me so many times. Important information about transportation, food, lodging, sights, and recommended tours (not necessarily Rick Steve's company tours) prepared me very well for my trip. I went to many of his recommended restaurants, purchased some of his recommended tours, and stayed in a villa he listed (and LOVED IT!). I very much enjoyed his writing style, his great tips, and the maps, and I would never hesitate to purchase another Rick Steve's guide.

Well organized and conversationally written, this is the best book about traveling in Italy we've purchased so far. We are just in the planning stages, and thanks to Rick's hints and descriptions we feel confident in setting our itinerary. Can't wait to get a taste of La Dolce Vita.

My wife and I used Rick's book on a self guided week long visit to Tuscany this past February. We visited Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano, Florence, Lucca, Pisa and the hill towns to the south. We used Rick's in each location to plan our visit around the most important / interesting sites, and then to provide more detailed information about the sites. We also used the book to help pick out restaurants. We had a great time - off season but the weather was great and the crowds minimal. The book was an indispensable part of our experience.

Paid for itself within a few hours of arriving in Italy. The recommendations, tips, and tricks definitely made my trip better and easier. Also, download Rick Steve’s Audio Europe app. Was able to save a ton of time and money by using his audioguides. Great purchase.

Lots of good information especially about the Firenze card. Has some key phrases in the back so you really don't need a separate dictionary. Most people speak enough English to get by. Has a good tear out map that is useful. Some of the free maps aren't that great. Lots of small maps to highlight specific interests like shopping or eating.

If you were going to Florence and or Tuscany you should get this book even if you have the Italy book. It’s about 1/2 as thick as the Italy book and obviously more detailed - 340 pages on Florence compared to about 100 pages in the Italy book.

This is a great guide for the area. It was full of helpful tips for traveling through Italy. I kept it with me while visiting museums to make sure I didn't miss the highlights. I loved that it also gave restaurant suggestions as well as driving tips as the signs are all different from other countries.

My first exposure was "On the Art of Travel." This is NOT a "Rick Steves" sort of volume with suggestions of places to visit and how to spend less money doing it. It is a first class analysis of what makes us WANT to travel and of what rewards our psyches achieve from it.Whether you beg, borrow or buy, this author will be a consistently valuable addition to your lifetime reading list.

Good enough to have read it 6 times and still not get all of it. I was taken by surprise at Proust's significance in history and myth -- beyond being a Monty Python joke. What is the name of the phenomenon wherein a person sees himself in an old painting? I will never look at a madelaine the same again. Thank you, Alain.

Its a great little book that gives one some perspective on the overall ideas of Proust. I found myself applying to life. I loved the idea of seeing other people you know inside faces and people in art / movies etc. Sometimes when you go to a gallery that has hundreds of portraits or saints etc. it can get a bit dry. Although it really does feel nice to see an old relatives likeness in something and then sit down ponder the idea and feel fresh when walking into the next room.

I would consider Alain De Botton one of the great modern philosophers of our time. The word philosopher might make you cringe, and I get it, but go listen to his interview on the Tim Ferris podcast. It will help in understanding his perspective on how a philosopher should function in the modern day. He also guides listeners to How Proust Can Change your Life as a good entry point into his work, what he believes in, and a book that he feels has held up since its release. I took the nod, and I’m happy I did.De Botton writes with clarity, concision, and wit. He turns the subject matter, Marcel Proust, and his book In Search of Lost Time, into a thoroughly enjoyable unconventional self-help manual. I say unconventional, but I can only hope the questions you ask yourself after reading this book become conventional in all sorts of ways.I try to imagine selling someone this book. For me, De Botton had me at the chapter titles. Just to name a few: How To Love Life Today, How To Take Your Time, How To Suffer Successfully, How To Be A Good Freind. Compelling questions to think about, and you’ll be surprised to find how Marcel Proust and his masterpiece In Search Of Lost Time provide a point of view on each.Paradoxically the book concludes with a chapter titled How To Put a Book Down. Simple advice but the message speaks to a much large theme that we all could benefit from. That Beneath every piece of art there is an author with a point of view on the world and the greatest homage we can pay to each is to see our world, for a short time, through their eyes. After that short time, it’s ok to admit that for all the beautiful qualities we might see in each genius work it might eventually prove to be silly, maniacal, false, or just wrong. And as you learn to embrace th​is indifference you’ll really start to see how Proust can change your life.

This book is a gem. Full of dry wit, the author imparts much wisdom with Proust's life as the backdrop. This book will be added to my shelf of favorites.

My hobby is building and restoring classic hot rods and Corvettes. I have read countless articles and books on the engine subject and have garnered many tid-bits along the way...But this book takes all those tid-bits (plus many more) and puts them in 144 picture and chart filled pages!Vizard is my new favorite author because he explains very complex subjects and makes them much easier to understand. Each chapters focus is explained in detail on how you can pull more horsepower from it: 1-The Basics, 2-Induction, 3-Fuel Delivery, 4-Intake Manifolds, 5-Supercharging, 6-Cylinder Heads, 7-Porting and Flow Testing, 8-Ignition Systems, 9-Camshaft 10-Cam Events, 11-Valve Train, 12-Short Block 13- Exhaust Manifolds, 14-Mufflers & Tail Pipes.He even explains how to build a great head flow bench (that will rival a pro bench) with a shop-vac! Just built mine for about $10 and can't wait to pull the heads off my '34. I just ordered his other book ""How to Port & Flow Test Cylinder Heads" for even more detail.Vizard also gives equal time to in-line 4 cylinder and V-8 engines in the text (although the pics lean toward V-8's). He explains when the engine science is the same and when different for your cylinder configuration.I really feel that I have learned so much more than I knew (and realized the mistakes I have made) just by reading this book. The chapters on Cams and the one on Carburetors finally made these items less of a trial and error exercise, and more of a "get it right the first time" for me.Can't rave enough on how stoked I am. Beginner or shop pro, you will learn something.P.S. This is not a shop manual on how to assemble an engine. It only explains how to determine the best components to use for your horsepower and torque needs.

Still reading through but I'm liking what I've read so far. My first book on this subject so I can't compare to other books but I think it's great & I can't imagine another book being significantly better. I've already applied some of the ideas to my daily ride. I definitely like that he provides dyno supported numbers to show what worked & what didn't. Although most of it (so far) is based on V8 domestics, he does reference imports (more my thing) and what I've read so far should apply to any engine. Although bigger displacement engines will get bigger gains I would expect the "gain difference" between two mods to translate directly to a 6 or 4 cylinder.Also helpful to debunk some myths, such as bigger intake tubes will always get bigger gains. Interesting to see that a "tuned" intake, which could be a smaller diameter than other options, can gain more than simply bolting on a large diameter intake.Bottom line, a great book so far & I would recommend it.

This book was exactly what I was hoping for. I have read a fair amount of books on airflow and engine theory, and many of them just throw out a bunch of equations and formulas that MAY suggest the optimal parts combination (as the equations were written by individuals through their own testing). This book differs from that in that you are essentially getting the information straight from the horse's mouth. David Vizard lets you know exactly what works for him, and how you can apply it to your own workings. It is the type of book that you will read 10 times and pick up something new each time.It is also great that this book deals with engine theory in general, not just what works on a SBC with a carburetor. Highly recommended for the enthusiast or the professional!

I like all that David Vizard writes! His recommendations on camshafts are thoroughly disputed among engine builders and cam grinders alike, and they are both wrong! I used Davids camshaft profile recommendations to the letter on several builds with fantastic results. His build knowledge and advice is priceless. Pay close attention and follow his recommendations and you will find more output!

If your interested in small blocks just buy it. David Vizard is one of the best writers out there and this book has so much useful information that it is a "must have" for any SBC fan. I borrowed and read twice in a week it before decided that I had to have a copy of my own. Its that good! His book, Building SBC's on a budget is another one that everybody needs to have. I would say buy it first and this one second though. David is a Writer, Engine builder, Racer, Machinist, owns a dyno and has done it all his life. Not like most books that are written by Geeks that have never got there hands dirty. This guy speaks to us,,, the gear-heads. He is the modern day Smokey Yunick but instead of drinking, smoking, and chasing whores, (not that there is anything wrong with that), David has spent much time writing what he has learned so that we all can use it. Order it and don't look back. If all the Small Block Chevy books out there these are the first two that you need.

This is one of the two very best engine engineering books along with Smokey Yunick's Power Secrets. Covers cyl. head porting and every other facet of building an engine to make power. You MUST have some of the information in this book if you are a DIY engine builder.
