This is one of the books on my son's list for his AP Reading summer project. I was surprised to see that it was such a short book, and I didn't realize that it was a graphic novel either. However short, it is still filled with tons of information. It's a fun and simple way for kids to become interested in and learn about magnetism. It's definitely a good read and even better if you can find it on sale!

I felt an attraction to this book having read another good book in the series - A Crash Course in Forces and Motion. This book is a good introduction to magnets. But even better, it highlights some real world applications where magnets are used to solve problems. I sent several copies to the very needy Native American reservation school - Wounded Knee District School PO Box 350, Manderson, South Dakota. I added some magnet sets (also sold through Amazon) as an enrichment activity. After all - seeing is believing when it comes to magnets. See Dowling Magnets Alnico Science Kit and Dowling Magnets Iron Filings. The Add on product School Specialty Magnetic Field Detection Compasses makes it possible to examine magnetic fields. Magnetic Field Viewing Film (also sold by Amazon is a good alternative non messy way to see magnetic fields around small magnets. This was a great book on magnetism. My son is autistic and the concepts made sense to him. He liked this.Got the paperback, had to tape a few pages in, but all in all a good book. Illustrated and written well.

My wife uses these in her 5th grade classroom and the students really like them. She found it especially useful with reluctant readers.

The idea of these books is great, but they need to make the book longer with more of a plot so that children have time to get into the adventure and learn the information.

Such a big hit! My 8 year old can't wait to earn the next one.

My son has been able to very explain science techniques since reading these series and finds great joy in reading them. He's now eager to get involved in science projects without us having to fuss at him.

I picked up this book on a whim from a local bookstore after my daughter decided to do a science project on magnetism. Besides starting to save magnets from old dead hard drives, we headed to the library to check out every book we could find on magnetism. They range from "simple experiments to try at home" to "science text books for kids" and almost all of them were not very useful at explaining the basic science or introducing anything more advanced than polarity.Enter Max Axiom. My initial thought was that it would also be simplified because it is a graphic novel trying to appeal to kids who aren't even interested. First off, kids are always interested in everything. Never make that assumption. Second I read the book first and found it very well written. The art is nice and it is short so it can't cover things in great depth, but the concepts introduced and the examples used are great. It covers some history of the name, why they work at a molecular level, alignment, basic polarity, earth's magnetic field, electromagnets, and real world application. About twice as much as the other books we already read. I was very impressed as it's only 30 pages and graphical, but in that respect I think the pictures helped succinctly explain some concepts. My 5 and 8 year-old daughters both got it.The book also has a glossary and an index as well as a recommended reading list in the back.I highly recommend the series and will be checking out more of them.

Written similar to a Patrick McManus book. A lot of small stories with a sense of humor and perspective.Clever, smart, realistic, spiritual, real, and also slightly political/societal.The author could have "timelined" it better, as it is "scattered around" as far as timeline.Yet, if you are a smart enough person, you can figure out the points being made, and that the dates are not exactlyimportant as the content of Mr. Debogorski's character/life.You can tell when the "author" takes over the book, and Mr. Debogorski is being quoted/taking over.I do not review books, but this one is underrated. I am sure that some fans of the show, might not exactly like this book.That is just how it is. It might just help them with perspective they have not earned/experienced.This is a coming of age, trials of life book, and I think most people do not experience any of it much anymore.I am writing from a 27 year old man's perspective, and that is that. I read Russian Literature, French Literature, all the supposed, smart guys, but, this book is so well rounded to me. "my type" of book.Thank you!

Matter of factly written.about a life lived.he tells it all.&it's written plainly no polished edges.he tells us his life as he's lived it & seen it.after I read this I think there should be another.if you want an honest story & a story from a working man's perspective this is it.

Alex Debogorski "talks" to us in this autobiography in his usual TV language, taking us from his childhood days to where he is now. Coming from poor Polish immigrant parents, he's living his life in a good, clean fashion molded from his strict Polish-born father. Taking advantage of every possible way of making decent money growing up, he exemplifies himself as a truly, hard worker brought up in a solid Catholic background, which he never forgets, always remembering his poor days and being thankful to where he has come. This is an honest depiction of growing up, working and living in the coldest parts of Canada. I'll never forget him stating that, although he is a Canadian, he hated communism so much that he wanted to fight in the Vietnam war to help his American friends.

Way too much of the book is tall tales about growing up . . . there's a lot of hot air and gas that doesn't need to be there and contributes nothing . . . pass the gas . . .

I have always admired the truckers, the rigs they drive, the things they see and hear. Alex is a great story teller. This book is full of stories about his life. Told as only the best story teller can. It reminded me of when I was a youngster and the adults would talk about the past. Easy to read and a book to share

I like learning about different cultures and the way the people view life. Alex telling about his family history and how he grew up helped me to understand him more. He has knowledge and a faith in God that a lot of people think they have and dont.This is a good book. After I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. It was like a fast pasted action mystery book, You never knew what was coming next. Of course it helps to understand the trucking industry a little to understand some of the things Alex talks about. But over all I would recommend this book.

This was my first book on my Kindle, and i am so happy that i read it. I first heard Alex on a radio show promoting his book, I though he sounded interesting and fun. My wife and i stated watching the show and realized there was some depth to these guys. So I couldn't wait to read the book. I almost couldn't put it down. I laughed along the way. Alex is an inspirational man, a tough guy with a heart of gold.The book is written as a collection of stories that Alex would entertain the other truckers, over the CB, with on late night runs

This people's history of North America is an eye-opener! Follow up with 1491 and 1493 and you'll really have a perspective of the history of North America which is very different from what you learned in your high school!

Nash shows when the distinguishment between clas and race with the advent of slavery in early America. Excellent book and easy read for an academic history publication.

First of all, I can see where some would find this book boring- that is if the reader has no interest in American History. But this begs the questions- why would such a person pick up this book to begin with? For class maybe, but I imagine every student of history has read a difficult book or two. This one simply doesn't qualify. As far as books I've had to read for school, this was pretty easy to get through.This book is not a primary source. If you are looking for such a thing, look elsewhere. This is a well-researched account of life on the early American frontier, and the interaction between different cultures.Someone makes the claim further down that this book makes the Europeans look really bad. I disagree. This book does a fine job of looking at this time period from multiple view points. There are moments when the Europeans will come off badly, but almost any group has it's moments throughout history where it's not going to be a shining example of how to live your life. Aside from which, as this book points out, the Europeans are not one single group and the different European groups looked at within this book (The English, Dutch, French, and Spanish) all had different relationships with the various indigenous peoples of what would become the eastern United States. This book also takes a look at slavery and the origins of that horrid institution in the Americas. It is often fascinating reading and certainly doesn't deserve the one star reviews it's received.

I would like to say thank you to the team of the author of this book. They have a done a great task to made this book for many people (include) me to learn premiere pro cs4. I never have any experience with premiere pro or video editing software before reading this book. But after I have completed it within 2 months, I really feel confident to do any video editing. The book has the following pro:- The author who wrote this book using a simple word to explain. Very easy to understand.- They use the color screen shot, which easy to capture the concept.- They have prepare a great practice file which is easy to learn after complete each lesson.- They have divide the complex topic into a small chapter in the book which is very easy to learn and to follow.If you are the beginner, this book is for you.For the cons of this book are:- The font are two small to read. I have a difficulty with my eyes to read the book in small font.- Each chapter in the book they have theory and practice. But in my opinion, the theory should be divide in one section and the second section is practice. So it is easy for people spend the time to read all the concept then start doing the practice just one time. Instead of read the concept, practice and read the concept again.- Some of the point in the book they said that it is beyond the scope of this book. If there is another book, this book should be tell read which book that they should read after they completed this book. But this book didn't tell any other book for further reading.In summary, this book is target to the people who is hurry to learn the video editing in adobe premiere pro because its writing style was target to the beginner level whose want to learn its fast.Even I have found some cons on this book, but I didn't down grade it to 4 starts. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 CIBI have used Premiere infrequently over the years since version 5 and it was time for a refresher and to become acquainted with the new features. The last Premiere CIB book I purchased was 5.0 (1998).The book touches on a wide range of key features in a concise manner. If greater depth is needed, the book refers the reader to additional resources. I felt that the range of topics covered and the depth of treatment was good. This book is targeted at beginning and intermediate Premiere users and is not intended to make anyone an expert.I completed almost all of the exercises and felt that the book fulfilled its mission and was well worth the cost and the time/effort.I recommend that when copying the DVD to your hard drive, you place it in the recommended location. I have a separate Books & Training folder on my D: drive and copied the DVD there. Every time I opened a project for the first time the "Where is file" dialog opened. Also, this non-standard location caused some Dynamic Link exercises to produce unsatisfactory results and display the red Media Offline image.Re the complaints by some of the early reviewers regarding the files on the DVD, I recall only one switch setting (p. 262, noted below) which was incorrect. I received my copy March 9, 2010.While some may quibble whether all of the items below are errata, my frustration was sufficient to knock off one star for the book. When the Adobe software is brought into the mix, my frustration would cause me to knock off two stars.I have submitted my errata list to Adobe Press.=================ErrataThe AdobePress & Peachpit errata list contains only one item (this was already corrected in my printing [ISBN-13: 978-0-321-57385-8, 9 8 7 6 5 4 3]):Page 252: Step 2 should read "Open the Lesson 13-2 Working sequence."My errata list:p. 34, Retakes: "Add Shot Placeholder" -> "Add Take Placeholder"p. 104, step 2 (at top of page): The image should show the gap after writers2.avi, which was created by p. 102, step 8. My system has been very reliable so I suspect that Dynamic Link is fragile and that going back and forth between Premiere/AfterEffects/Encore in the preceding lessons had pushed it too far. Rather than re-doing the entire Encore chapter from scratch I gave up with one page of the book to go.With the frequent errors toward the end of the book I got the impression that either a different writer worked on those chapters or the testers were getting weary or sections were extracted from a previous version of CIB.==================Premiere Pro CS4 bugs/inconveniences which you may encounter (version PP4.2.1 on Win7 x64):o Checkbox "Display only exact filename matches" in the "Where is the file" dialog box has no effect. Works correctly on XP x32.o The Effects Control panel does not honor the standard keyboard shortcut of entering time from the numeric keypad. If you want to go to a specific time in the Timeline, Program Monitor, Source Monitor, or Reference Monitor you can simply enter the time (no punctuation (e.g., ; or .) needed). But this does not work when the Effects Control panel has focus. (Note that if one or more clips are selected when using this technique, the clips are moved so that the in point of the first clip aligns with the entered time.)o Activating the Effects panel does not place the cursor in the search field. This is probably a minor issue if you select the Effects panel with the mouse, but it is more of an inconvenience if you got there via Shift+7.o The image on External Devices (Program Monitor > Playback Settings) is not updated real time while manipulating an effect in Effect Controls while the Program Monitor > Display Mode is set to one or more of the Vectorscope/waveform monitors. The work around is to leave the Program Monitor set to Composite Video and set the Reference Monitor (Window > Reference Monitor) to display the Vectorscope/waveform monitors.o Applying the Reverb effect to a 5.1 submix only outputs to the Front Left and Front Right channels, that is, only the two leftmost VU columns in the mixer display for the Master bus display activity. (I tried a variation on Lesson 14-5: add a 5.1 submix, direct Audio 6 and Audio 7 to that new submix, and add the Reverb effect. With Reverb bypassed everything is fine; with Reverb enabled, there is no output. Maybe Premiere is using the stereo version of Reverb rather than the 5.1 version.).

In fact, it's well known that many people who go to Michigan Football games don't have tickets and go just to tailgate and watch the game on TV! It's truly incredible to see these people with the RV's and a spread that would make any caterer jealous. The Tailgating Cookbook is part BBQ cookbook and part event planner.The brief introduction covers Tailgating basics such as equipment, preparation, food storage, etc, before getting into the meat of the book, no pun intended on appetizers. Now I love a good appetizer and hot wings can be a meal to me. The book provides a great buffalo wing recipe where the wings can be grilled. There are also recipes for tailgate party staples such as Salsas, Guacamole dip, deviled eggs, shrimp cocktail, and more. After the appetizers comes the main courses and the book is divided into sections on Beef, pork, chicken, fish, vegetables, Burgers and Brats, Chili, side dishes, desserts, and drinks. There's also specific menus for special events like Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July.The author takes into account that this is a tailgate and some recipes have to be prepped in advanced either in the morning or the night before, or the recipes are things that can be made quickly and with a minimum number of ingredients. The Potato salad with Bacon is a great make ahead dish and the bacon really gives it some flair over everyday potato salad. The Lambeau field or more accurately Wisconsin-style Brats are always a great favorite for game day. And can be grilled or boiled. The Hawaiian style chicken kabobs are also great and very easy to make. An excellent food that can even be made on a small hibachi if that's all you have and you're not feeding many. Everyone has their own favorites for tailgating but Bob Sloan has some mighty good recipes here as well as some practical tips on making a good tailgate party.

I picked up this book on a whim at my son's school book fair . . . and what a gem! The recipes are easy to follow, forgiving, delicious, and absolutely not just for tailgating. In addition to 60+ main courses for the grill, Bob offers another 60+ recipes for appetizers, sides, desserts, and drinks. Everything can be prepared ahead of time, and Bob gives great directions on what to do at home, how to package it for transportation, and how to get it together for serving once you're there. Perfect for when you need to take a dish (to picnics, potlucks, etc) or for when you want to prep most of your meal in the morning. We used many of his grill recipes when we remodeled our kitchen and had no stove or cooktop for two months. Bob's recipes are above-the-ordinary but not exotic, with results that are good-enough for company as well as your family. Two of our grill favorites are the Wasabi-Glazed Grilled Salmon, and the Grilled Pork Tenderloins with Maple-Mustard Glaze. Other recipes we love include the Wild Rice Salad with Dried Cranberries (I substitute dried cherries), the Oven-Fried Chicken Drumsticks, and the yummy Ideal Chocolate Cake. The book also captures game-day frivolity and fun, with short-and-sassy stories and vintage tailgating photos appealing to team-sports fans of all stripes and loyalties. This is a cleverly written top-shelf cookbook that you'll both enjoy and use . . . what more could you want?

Written in a humorous entertaining way, I found myself enjoying the story behind the phrase.

This is a great read! When I went to Ireland, I have to admit I spent a great deal of time with my mouth open, thinking that I was hearing some horrible things. If I would have had this book, it would have saved my shock!! I love it!!

Very amusing. Quick read.

Not sure where I would have had to travel in Ireland to even hear these phrases used. Just returned from a 1st time visit & heard only a wee bit of these used in the counties of Limerick, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Cork, Kerry, Clare & Galway.

Spent a few weeks in Ireland but did not hear many of these. It's missing "and how did you find it?" (meaning what did you think of it, not where was it). Still great fun and captures the Irish spirit.

This was a bit smaller than I thought it was going to be, and it is hard to say if any of the info will come in handy in Ireland, but it made me laugh when I read it.

I loved this book. It brought back memories of my Irish grandparents and my mom. I myself have been known to drop a little Irish. Hope & pray to go to Ireland someday.

Fun seeing all these phrases, but doubt if I will use them...still enjoyed it very much.

Though I already exercise this gives me more incentive and better tools to utilize my workouts to maximize the benefits. No, I do not have the luxury of a personal trainer as this book so often refers to, but I'm confident in doing it on my own.

Intellectual and research based information provided for healthy living. For those who cringe every time they hear an advertisement for a way to lose 30 pounds in 30 days, you will appreciate a book that deals with healthy living in an accurate and science based approach.

Great guide for joining gyms and/or hiring a trainer

This book is helpful and well written. I knew of the author's background in fitness and felt comfortable that this information would be current and accurate. I purchased the book to help me in deciding what to look for in a personal trainer. I am armed now with what I need, to ask questions, and what to look for in this important decision. Being over 50 and overweight with knee and hip issues I needed to find the right fit for me. This book really steered me in the right direction. I need to get on a exercise program I can live with and a trainer who understands that. This book helped with what to look for. It also confirmed and reinforced in doing things correctly and finding the right program or trainer for me. It was eye opening, refreshing and informative, if you are over 50 and lost and in need of a fitness regime-- this will give you direction you can count on. I wish the author would have spent more time in the strength chapter, otherwise, very helpful. 4 stars.

I found this book to be very informative. I have exercised off and on all my life, consider myself to be pretty active. I have belonged to gyms all my adult life, and have been doing pretty much the same workout routine for the past several years. Although I feel pretty fit, I am certainly not fit enough, and I believe now that it's because of my workouts. I need to switch it up, and this book has helped me realize this. The author does a great job combining her knowledge of fitness with her knowledge of healthy eating habits. I am approaching my sixties and this will help me move into the next decade with my workout routine. I highly recommend this to anyone over 50 wanting to remain actively fit, getting fit, or continuing with their current fitness program.

This book was a bit of a shock. I have hired personal trainers before and they didn't relay the same content here. I'll be much more careful next time. Based on the research included in the book I don't think I had the best exercise program for my goals and am not surprised I wasn't inspired to continue. Some of the videos in the back section of book are for much older and less fit people than the chapters in the book but overall good read. I'd have paid more for a trainer who gave the kind of service included here.

So I have been fairly lucky and been coasting for a LONG time in my "sometimes workouts" and with no coach since I didn't want to risk paying someone who didn't know how to deal with my back and neck problems. Had no idea how to find the right person.This book has great info to steer that as well as all he other fitness decisions and plans. I am at that brink of losing ability to function in so many actvities if I procrastinate any longer. I am ready to find a fitness professional and movements and actvities that will help me enjoy this phase of my life. Huge amount of info, well-written particularly for us with Boomer minds & bodies. The author has excellent credentials and experience.
