Great guide for joining gyms and/or hiring a trainer

This book is helpful and well written. I knew of the author's background in fitness and felt comfortable that this information would be current and accurate. I purchased the book to help me in deciding what to look for in a personal trainer. I am armed now with what I need, to ask questions, and what to look for in this important decision. Being over 50 and overweight with knee and hip issues I needed to find the right fit for me. This book really steered me in the right direction. I need to get on a exercise program I can live with and a trainer who understands that. This book helped with what to look for. It also confirmed and reinforced in doing things correctly and finding the right program or trainer for me. It was eye opening, refreshing and informative, if you are over 50 and lost and in need of a fitness regime-- this will give you direction you can count on. I wish the author would have spent more time in the strength chapter, otherwise, very helpful. 4 stars.

I found this book to be very informative. I have exercised off and on all my life, consider myself to be pretty active. I have belonged to gyms all my adult life, and have been doing pretty much the same workout routine for the past several years. Although I feel pretty fit, I am certainly not fit enough, and I believe now that it's because of my workouts. I need to switch it up, and this book has helped me realize this. The author does a great job combining her knowledge of fitness with her knowledge of healthy eating habits. I am approaching my sixties and this will help me move into the next decade with my workout routine. I highly recommend this to anyone over 50 wanting to remain actively fit, getting fit, or continuing with their current fitness program.

This book was a bit of a shock. I have hired personal trainers before and they didn't relay the same content here. I'll be much more careful next time. Based on the research included in the book I don't think I had the best exercise program for my goals and am not surprised I wasn't inspired to continue. Some of the videos in the back section of book are for much older and less fit people than the chapters in the book but overall good read. I'd have paid more for a trainer who gave the kind of service included here.

So I have been fairly lucky and been coasting for a LONG time in my "sometimes workouts" and with no coach since I didn't want to risk paying someone who didn't know how to deal with my back and neck problems. Had no idea how to find the right person.This book has great info to steer that as well as all he other fitness decisions and plans. I am at that brink of losing ability to function in so many actvities if I procrastinate any longer. I am ready to find a fitness professional and movements and actvities that will help me enjoy this phase of my life. Huge amount of info, well-written particularly for us with Boomer minds & bodies. I have read this book for five consecutive days in a row for nap and night time. My son can not get enough. We love how George gets curious in this book about camping. We love to camp with him and pretend like we're roasting marshmallows too. We have had many learning experience just with this book. We talked about fire safety, how animals protect themselves, and how to camp. The pictures are beautifully illustrated bringing the reader on a whirlwind of causes and effects in the true Curious George way.

Yes, this is clearly a preposterous publication, because common sense tells us that such a high quality book is almost an impossibility!It is not just the beautiful color and black and white prints that cause this book to stand out as a magnificent historical (and contemporary, given Tom Killion's beautiful visuals) summary of California's magnificent coastline, and of the values and lives of the inhabitants, over time.It is just plain preposterous that Killion has been able to sew together so much of the beauty of the coast, including the botanical beauty and the visual beauty, along with the beauty and awareness of this coast's past inhabitants.Beware, this book's hardbound edition will mesmerize you, and draw you into its subject matter...

Killion is a remarkable artist. Coupled with Snyders sometimes dreamy, often pinpoint realistic descriptions, this (and all in the series so far) take one on a visual and spiritual trip through California's most amazing topography.Killions prints are so magnificent that their brilliance comes through even in book plates... which are very good in themselves.If you're a fan of Japanese woodblock, or really any printing style, this book and Killion's works are for you. If you are a lover of visual and word arts, then this is a real delight to behold.

Gorgeous art and a text that combines selected poetry with the clearest, most informative, most engaging account of human interactions with the sea, the shore, and the coastal California. I've read many books about California---this one is special.

This is a beautiful, high-quality, hardback book. It could be considered a coffee-table book: 9-1/2 x 12 inches, 187 pp., with thick paper pages and a gorgeous dust jacket. I counted 41 color pix, many full page, and tons of b&w--Killion really knows how to do b&w and they are just as wonderful as the color. There is also text and poetry here, but I have to confess I just look at the artwork and am amazed. BTW, I would also recommend checking out Killion's previous two books.

While the other reviews of this book are insightful, accurate and substantive, I find myself (after reading and viewing it many times) just as impressed and impacted by Tom Killion's text, as I am by the color & B&W prints. We all know how talented Killion is with his woodblock prints, and many of us understand the vital importance of Robinson Jeffers, but the more I read this book, the more I find myself enthralled by Killion's writing.He has chosen the very best quotes and excerpts from so many poets and writers, going far back into the first recorded diaries and comments about California's coast, plus Killion's own commentary and opinions and historical insights are themselves a keypart of the vitality and composition of this fantastic book. I have always enjoyed Tom's art, but this book makes me very aware of his superb talents as a writer. I hope the rest of you who buy and read this gem, appreciate the author's own writing and editing, along with his incredible woodblocks, as much as I have.Again, this book shines at first because of the excellent prints and typography, but then it glows even more as you peruse it in its entirety, due to the quality of the poetry (not just Jeffers' poetry), the historical interest and facts that it conveys, and then because Heyday Books has done its usual phenomenal job of editing, composition, book design, etc.What a "wild" and "preposterous" book, and what an interesting, enjoyable read and visual treat...the only (mild) criticism I have is that Gary Snyder's comments and poetry are included. Snyder says here that Jeffers "could have been a great poet", which of course is ludicrous (Jeffers clearly WAS a great poet). I suspect that Gary Snyder is jealous of Robinson Jeffers, and in my opinion, the inclusion of Snyder's poetry and comments was unnecessary.Furthermore, Snyder knows far too little about California, as indicated in his poem "Sharing an Oyster with the Captain". In this poem, Snyder claims that in 1579, Francis Drake sailed into the Farallones and saw "scotch broom" among other plants.There was no scotch broom in California, in 1579. That weedy plant didn't come to California (from western and central Europe) until the 1800's, primarily during the Gold Rush (the broom seeds were used as fillings in mattresses).

Wide range of poetry selections will appeal differently depending on the reader's tastes, but always well-selected to compliment the theme of the book. I was especially taken with the quotes from Richard Henry Dana, who had been only a name in a wide pantheon of "classics" before Mr. Killion let his readers hear his voice.

Professor Brian Cox, OBE FRS is Professor of Particle Physics at the University of Manchester and the Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science. He is best known as a science broadcaster and presenter of the popular BBC Wonders trilogy, Human Universe, Forces of Nature and Stargazing Live, as well as co-presenting BBC Radio 4’s multi-award winning science/comedy show The Infinite Monkey Cage. He was also the keyboard player in the UK pop band D:Ream in the 1990s and used to be a bus spotter.Robin Ince was in a far less successful band than Brian Cox called The Reg Gutteridge Experience. Their songs have not been used by any political party as an anthem, not even ‘The Hornsey Axe Murderer’. As well as shows about science he does podcasts about angry music with Michael Legge (Vitriola) and The Book Shambles Podcast with Josie Long. He has sometimes received awards for his stand-up which is about stuffed goats in galleries and Kurt Vonnegut. He lost a round of Just a Minute after saying ‘allo allo’ when his brain needed a reference to a sitcom. Paul Merton was gleeful. He has also edited two anthologies of horror stories by comedians called Dead Funny. (For example, page 8 of the pdf version uses the word God 31 times.) In my experience, the use of scripture often divides, in addition to uniting people.Baby boomers have been known as the “Me Generation” since the 1970’s and millennial’s are sometimes called the “Me Me Me Generation”. Although I agree that the apparent increase of narcissism displayed by many is a problem, I personally believe that the greatest threat to humanity is not the “me disease” but the “small we disease”. People are individually capable of a microscopic degree of destruction and suffering compared to the havoc produced by a “small we” group.“Small we” groups are composed of individuals who perceive a specific commonality with other group members, while often feeling disapproval, disgust, and sometimes hatred for those perceived not to have this commonality. The current political divide in the United States, between Trump supporters and those who don’t support Trump, is one example. The conflicts among those with different religious beliefs also provide seemingly endless examples of the misery engendered by the small we disease.So I was interested in learning if this book was promoting the Big We (which would include at least all of us humans living on Earth) or a smaller we. The book appears to provide some evidence of both. There are passages which seem to refer to the Big We. In chapter 7, Thompson writes, “This idea of togetherness, oneness, is beginning to pop out at me. I am shifting from me to WE. It is a collective idea that we are one people—all of us. Love is all of us coming together in one accord.”On the other hand, a number of scriptures quoted confine the “we” to a group of believers — which almost always means "people that believe as we do." An example is the first scripture quoted in Chapter 12, from Acts 2:42-47. The first and fourth sentences read: “The believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the community, to their shared meals, and to their prayers… All the believers were united and shared everything.”Hopefully, this book will expand the caring and inclusiveness of Christians.
