I am an unusual reviewer, as I grew up with Lisa Kohn’ mother, Mimi Freiman, as a classmate of mine at Millburn, NJ High School, Class of 1961. More than that, Mimi and I had a special relationship; no we didn’t date, but we did have a lot classes together and.we grow to respect one another, perhaps admire the other, or what ever it was. What ever it was, It was special. When I saw Mimi at class unions over the years, we smiled and hugged, but little did I know about the life she led. When I heard about her daughter’s Moonie memoir, naturally, I was a taken back 😳 if fascinated to read it and I recently did so with great respect. Lisa is a wonderful writer. Her prose is faultless; her story is uncanny; her struggles unimaginable; and her devotion inspiring. Even if you don’t know Mimi, you I’ll know her gifted daughter well after a good and inspiring read. Don’t miss he experience.

I've known Lisa for a very long time but knew very little of this history until recently. This is a hard book to read when you know the adult person who's going through all this trauma as a child and adolescent. Growing up in the NY area I was familiar with the "Moonies" as depicted in the news and remember a surprising amount about them since they seemed so unusual to this Catholic kid raised in the suburbs. We all grow up with problems I imagine- but reading how Lisa overcame her upbringing and became the happy and successful person I know was inspirational. Too many of us let our childhoods hold us back- there are lessons to be learned here for those who want to overcome theirs.

It was somewhere between 36 and 40 years ago. I was at Jacob House, working with Lisa's mother. One day she said to me, "David, you struggle between your head and your heart. You need to make a choice." ...or something like that. I didn't write it down.I wish I had written it down. Lisa's mom was right, and as it happens, I still have yet to choose. The struggle persists to this day.Lisa, I'm sorry to hear of what your family went through back then. Your mother just carried on in doing what she was doing, and that topic of conversation didn't occur to me at the time. So I didn't know until I bought your book. You wrote of your family's ordeal so wonderfully well. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.(P.S. Sorry my editing the previous review -- find "student"; replace with "youngster," hit select all by mistake -- caused its temporary disapparence. This time I made a backup copy.)

Lisa Kohn wanted two things in her childhood, to love God and to be with her mother. When her mother chose God instead of Lisa and her brother, the conflict begins, but by this time Lisa is a whole-hearted believer in “The Principle”. Lisa’s desire to do the right thing, her confusion as the adults in her life take advantage of her, and her struggle for self confidence and self love make this one hell of a compelling story. Her struggle with abuse, addiction, and abandonment is intense and her recovery is inspirational.

Lisa tells the story of her childhood growing up in the church run by Reverend Moon. She explains the daily living under the cults strict rules along with her time spent with her dad who was a drunk and an addict. I couldn’t put the book down. I recommend it for anyone interested in a life of trials and learning how to love.

Compelling story about overcoming parental abandonment, substance abuse and emotional trauma while coming of age in 1970-80s New York City. Even if you can't relate to her specific issues, it helps you to develop empathy for others in those situations. That said, the story is also a page turner and you find yourself wanting to continue reading.

I enjoyed reading this book. I felt like the author was more affected by her mother leaving her than what the church did. I am amazed the author came out of her growing-up-years as a sane person.

I loved Lisa's To the Moon and Back! She grows up with abusive parents and the Moonies and comes of age through heart-wrenching turmoil. Even so, this is a story of hope. Lisa confronts her past and chooses a better future. I admire how she turns surviving into thriving. Kudos on a very interesting and hopeful book!
