The amount of information provided here is impressive, beginning with James Ford Rhodes' Pulitzer Prize-winning History of the Civil War. The major problem is that, while all the authors are listed together on the set's title-page, no names are attached to the specific book or books each has written. For example, unless one recognizes Rhodes as the author of the aforementioned history, one would not know he wrote it. The authors of many items here, of course, are obvious, such as the autobiographies, memoirs, and speeches (presumably written by the subjects themselves), but the biographies (written by others) are not. Otherwise, the information is old (and public domain) but excellent; there is an active TOC, and the formatting is appealing. But because individual works are not specifically and clearly credited, I have deducted one star from an otherwise 5-star collection.

Disappointed in the author. He writes more of what he thinks instead of actual history... So you kind of have to take like a grain of salt. Wished he could have been more faithful. Tired of the kids not knowing history as it is.

It is only through the examination of those who lived through a period of time that we can fully grasp the social and military orders that shaped the time, and which in turn have influenced our own. The penchant of modern 'so-called historians' to examine the past through their rose coloured lenses of the present creates a false image of those events and in turn creates crises within the present society. These works, contained within this selection of Civil War documents, can set the record straight for some, even as it confuses those who base their opinions upon the self appointed priests of a false narrative of the past.

This was a fairly comprehensive look at the principle players in the Civil War. It was interesting to read the Jefferson Davis and Robert E Lee biographys from a southern point of view.

Well written, engrossing, inspiring. Highly recommend.

Excellent read

Good book

I liked the detail. However, author has long, long run on sentences, paragraphs that go on for pages and pages, and chapters that are too long to read in one sitting.
