This was a fun adaptation of Gaiman's short novel, originally illustrated by Charles Vess and adapted to film. I have Gaimain's audiobook as well. It's just such a charming fairy tale and the cast here is exquisite. Keep your ears tuned to hear Neil's voice and Tori Amos', too!

This is a review of the BBC radio production. Stardust is a marvelous story, and the audio production is superb. The actors are on top of their game, sound effects and music are well done, and the story has been adapted well. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

The quality of the audio was excellent and the performances were amazing. I've had trouble with some audio dramas where that add in too many effects which make it difficult to hear what's being said, but this had an excellent balance of music/effects to voice level. The story is excellent and in true Gaiman fashion.

Stardust began as a novel written by Neil Gaiman with illustrations by Charles Vess. In 2016 BBC Radio 4 released a full cast dramatisation divided into two parts. This review reflects the Audible Audio distribution of the work.As narrated by Elanor Brown, our story focuses on the unusual circumstances that led to the birth of Tristan (Matthew Beard) who grows up to be a curious enough young man who decides he's willing to do anything for the heart of Victoria (Aisling Loftus). And this includes willing to cross into the land of Faerie to seek out the fallen star in order to win her hand.At the same time, the eighty-first Lord of Stormhold (Michael Roberts) passes, leaving his sons to settle the matter of succession. However he had left them a final challege - to find the Power of Stormhold, which he had cast out the window towards the sky and was actually reason a star had fallen while Tristan was trying to woo Victoria. Thus his remaining sons Primus (Finlay Robertson), Tertius (Alex Macqueen) and Septimus (Blake Ritson) must now venture to find it before they find themselves murdered under mysterious circumstances. And then there's the three witches known as The Lilim, the eldest being Morwanneg (Frances Barber), who need the heart of the fallen start to restore their youth and stay alive. What I Liked: While I was largely unfamiliar with the cast at first, I was surprised by how well they worked together. Despite memories of the movie in mind, this radio play was a creature of its own and the actors assembled for the production were certainly chosen thoughtfully. I want to cite people for standout performances but its hard to point to anyone since they were all quite good at things. The way things were structured and the use of incidental music and foley effects here and there helped make the production feel more like a play unfolding. But even if you''re just listening to it, the story feels nicely vivid and makes for a great listeing experience. So even though I knew the story well enough, I was still keen on listening for the next chapter. What Could Have Been Better: It's hard to criticize such a beloved story that I have already consistently appreciated across the story's incarnations. So that's not really the issue I suppose. We could cite certain sequences that may have felt more important in your head but that didn't translate well to the production, but that boils down to a matter of opinion.I guess the only other challenge is if you don't quite have the constitution for appreciating long form audio content of this nature, this book may not be the one to change your mind. The very "fairy tale" structure of the original story makes it similarly slow-paced at times as an audio production. So that's another minor quibble.TL;DR: Stardust as a BBC Radio 4 production is an amazing experience in itself and does present itself as one of the better ways to experience this story beyond the original graphic novels and such. It's very well-acted and produced, making for a rich listening experience.

I saw the movie but this is even more wonderful imo. I love it when my imagination is given free rein.I'm a fan of audible productions with a full cast of players and this really hit the spot. Characters have distinct voices. One sounded a lot like Samwise Gamgee btwI sincerely hope these type of productions continue.
