His research interests are biothreat pathogen detection, agro-terrorism and the role of military forces in disaster response and humanitarian assistance.Since 2003, Professor Ryan has also served as Managing Director of Quetzal Consulting, Inc. a private firm specializing in a wide array of consultative services related to biothreat pathogen detection, tropical diseases research, course development, diagnostics development, marketing and product management. It was full of very good information

For academics, this is a terrible textbook. The textbook consists of examples, but the support documents in the content are missing and much of it is based on old theories that are not relevant or based on current local, State, and Federal practices. The textbook lack sufficient content to write a university level course and requires extensive research to augment the lacking content

The information is great but some of the images and graphics are hard to make out because the book is printed in gray scale. I tried posting pictures in the last review but Amazon would not publish it.

I am a masters student pursuing my Master of Science in Emergency Management. This was the required textbook for Hazard Mitigation. I cannot recommend this text enough. Any student or even practitioner in the field of EM needs this book on their shelves. It delves into natural, technological, and man-made hazards not only in the U.S., but also in countries around the world.

Excellent book and a great resource on hazard mitigation! The book covers both natural and man-made hazards and also mitigation activities in other countries besides the U.S., which I like the most.

Explaining the roles of men & women, the way God intended. Well written using the Word of God. Hollywood & the culture has reduced women to objects to be used & discarded. Men are not acting like men. Don't get Kindle version as there will be pages you can't read & font won't change. The are several errors in the writing that are not in hard copy. I purchased hard copy after not being able to read 5 pages in a row.

First, this book is very much inside baseball for the Christian evangelical sphere (meaning if you don't know Christ Jesus, if you haven't come to the point of wanting to die to the evil inside you and live with His help, pick up a Bible, visit a church, and ask questions, the topic of this can wait a long time). The authors try to present arguments in favor of an hierarchal view of the sexes/genders that is God honoring and Biblical. Biblical is a tough word, as the Bible has prostitutes who get rewarded for faith, and a virgin who is killed to fulfill her dad's vow to God, while promoting reliance on God's forgiveness and morality. My view going in was that, as a man, God gives me certain responsibilities to/for women. My concern was that this book would help authoritative men to feel justified in abuse. The author's share that concern and repeatedly clarify that authority isn't synonymous with tyranny or abuse.Each chapter is a separate essay, often by a different author, most dealing with a distinct Bible passage and addressing a question about the sexes. As such the quality, vigor, goal, and background of each chapter is a little different. Many are academically minded, so their essays are dry but rewarding. Some are much more poetic, so their chapters are less rigorous but instead allow for refocusing the questions, broader Biblical context, and can stand alone better. It isn't about women in the kitchen, men in the field/office/world (which is good, because that's not what the Bible teaches) but about loving service in care (for men) and loving service in support (for women). It isn't about black and white, but tendencies. It isn't about "where's my dinner?" or "cars vs dolls" but a man's willingness, responsibility, and authority to take risks for a woman and a woman's willingness and responsiveness to accept (or reject) those overtures.In the end, I have become convinced that along with manly responsibility comes certain authority, but I am not convinced I like the idea altogether. I pray God works in me, and all Christian men (whether they read this book or not) to mature and humble with the authority we only have from and in line with Jesus.

I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I had no idea what to expect of this book when It arrived. I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee.One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives.It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. I slow down, and his true words align the iron filings in my heart.Let the educated debaters go on with their "Ten thousand things" arguing about translations and meanings. They miss the point. Get this book, make some tea, turn of the incessant rattlings in your brain and the screens in your home and relax to ancient wisdom that has influenced millions of hearts and minds for thousands of years...

This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

I would give this book 99 stars if I could. Garrett Hardin, most famous for his essay 'The Tragedy of the Commons' (look it up on Wikipedia), intellectually evicerates anyone who would be so foolish as to think that overpopulation is NOT a problem. Nearly every human ill can be attributed to the simple phrase 'too many people and too few resources,' and Hardin attacks this issue from every angle. As a self styled 'ecological conservative' Hardin attacks both liberal democratic and traditional conservative ideology.I thought I knew a little bit about 'real' economics until I read this book, boy was I wrong. If, like me, you thought that Freakonomics was cutting edge and savvy then you would definitely love this book. Hardin clearly has a firm grasp on what economics is actually about. He throws everything at you - natural selection, Thomas Malthus, carrying capacity, demographics, Unmanaged Commons and so much more that this book is sure to open your eyes to the growing problem around us.The only negative thing (hence the -1 star from 100) I can say about the book is that there is little continuity or flow to it. Rather than any continuous theme, it seems more like his lecture notes stuck together in some kind of topical series. Besides that, I highly highly recommend everyone read this book - sadly though, I am a realist and know that few will (to society's detriment).If you like this book, you will like Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed; or if you liked Collapse, then you will like this book.

I was surprised how well written this was. It has a text book content and topic, but I could hardly put it down.

We have NOT been living within our ecologically sustainable limits for hundreds of years, as this author so clearly shows.

I am not as smart as some of the other people who have already reviewed this book. I openly admit this. I'm only on Page 96 and I am dreading the next 200 pages. The author repeats himself over and over,mentions people who I've never heard of (sorry, I already said I wasn't smart) and wastes paragraph after paragraph saying almost nothing.Thus far? All you need to know is this. Watch the movie "Kingsman: The Secret Service" Samuel L. Jackson's character 'Richmond Valentine' wants to control the world population problem as he sees it by killing off anyone who isn't rich, beautiful, powerful, and/or famous and you can save yourself the agony of reading this book. I haven't gotten there yet, but I'm sure the author is going to recommend population control in some way, shape, or form, and while extremely logical it's unrealistic.Humans are going to reproduce, ravage the ecosystem, and think nothing of future generations for whatever cause currently consumes them be it self interest, political, or otherwise. Acting like it's going to change is nonsense.Hey, here's another movie reference from The Matrix that will save you some time:Agent Smith: I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure.While artificial intelligence could be just around the corner, I doubt I'll see it in the next 50-years. But this quote from The Matrix and the plot of Kingsman sum up this book thus far for me.Again, I'm stupid and I had to use movie references to make sense of it. I'll finish it, but this is a hard read for a jackass like myself.P.S. People are still going to have sex and destroy any math and/or logic that comes into existence no matter what level of intelligence is behind population control. When you get to the "people are starving in 1949 China and ate the birds that ate the insects and screwed up the eco-system" part should you read this book, you will realize that all the logic in the world isn't going to stop self-interest. People who are starving will eat some birds, yes - the insects that don't get eaten are (were) a problem. But if you think anyone is going to starve to death to balance out the eco-system then you're nuts.Maybe the next 200 pages will have better information, but I'm not counting on it.05.22.17: Finally finished this thing. This was a chore. Here's some more observations from the book.A. Homer Simpson is running every nuclear facility in the United States. The author actually infers this without bringing up Homer Simpson's name but he may as well have done so.B. Poor people have nothing to do but reproduce.C. Optimism and hoping for technology to improve anything for the long term is far fetched science fiction.Again, I see the logic behind his thinking but I'll give the author credit for this: No politician is going to make population control their main point of emphasis when campaigning for a position.I still like my two movie references above to describe this book. Planet Earth needs a lot of help and while I agree population will be - if it's not already a problem - the author doesn't do much other than point out a problem and offers very little solutions.If you're into listening to people whine for hours upon end without providing solutions to the problem, then this book is perfect for you.

commonsense read

This book opens up avenues of thought and reason that aren't explicitly expressed or taught through conventional means. This should be read and discussed by many, unfortunately few will have either the interest or intellectual flexibility to make the most of this brilliant exercise in reason. The only part of the book I feel is flawed is his staunch view on Immigration. There are societal influences that did not add necessary weight to his argument [maybe they are expanded on in his book dealing solely with Immigration]. However, that is a fractional concern when the rest of the book is a work of such immense caliber.
