This Art of Manliness book would be the first to recommend in the series, in my opinion. This kind of book, the ones that go deep in philosophical principles, are essential to define a working manhood. In this case, the principles are encapsulated in seven virtues: honor, industriousness, resolution, courage, manliness, self-reliance and discipline (not necessarily in that order).It has quotes from different epochs, truly from men who followed these virtues (or at least tried to), from from Marcus Aurelius to George Washington.This book is highly recommended.

This guy (and his wife who co-authored the book) is a really great thinker. His background in classics, religious thought and unpretentious American life makes just about everything he produces really high class. He introduces many of us to concepts and resources that we would otherwise not just stumble upon--which is a tragedy, because he quickly and regularly convinces that we've been missing out on essential wisdom of the ages that has somehow been lost in modernity.Keep it up, Brett and Kate! I hope I get to meet you someday.I think it's in their intro that they talk about manhood, indeed, sharing attributes with womanhood. Manhood is not as distinct from womanhood as it is from childhood or boyhood. I love that, and it's an important distinction. To be sure, Brett doesn't blur the sexes, but the point helps distinguish manhood from a superficial pseudo-masculinity.

Before I read this book I was in a depressive state and only heard of it, through a brief connection, while researching Theodore Roosevelt. After reading it and the other artonmanliness.com books, I found this to be the best one, structurally and emotionally.The book is an anthology of poems and speeches from the past, all told in a blunt manner about the means and ways men have inspired and challenged themselves. These exercpts are divided into different sections based on what virtues they provide. Not only did I find many of these stories moving to tears. They are also set up well so that it doesn't feel repetitive, even when many stories share similar morals or train of thought. This is how I came to enjoy re-reading this book whenever I'm in a rut and the book's author details and ends the book in a satisfying way.In short, this is a book that has and continues to inspire me to do more, and I would recommend it to anyone. But not my copy, it's really worn down from my time with it :)

Got this as a gift for my husband who loves the Art of Manliness website and thought he would enjoy reading it and maybe turning it into a coffee table book for good discussion as well. He is very excited to read it and it was a big hit for him. I would definitely recommend this as a gift for the man in your life if he would appreciate the practical skills and advice that it contains that is akin to what the website contains.

This is a fantastic book for any man's collection. For one, it looks distressed, but it's not – giving it that classic look and feel throughout the pages. More importantly, however, is the content of those pages. The virtues of Manliness, Courage, Industry, Resolution, Self-Reliance, Discipline, and Honor are set as chapters, each filled with passages from history, writings from Seneca, Rudyard Kipling, Benjamin Franklin, and much more.I have several copies I like to give away on my website and instagram account. We can never have too much wisdom or gentlemen in the world, right? This is one of the staples of keeping both of those numbers high. I definitely recommend.

WHAT I LIKED1. As other reviewers have mentioned, I greatly enjoyed the breadth of the selections. The selections came from a wide range of time periods (Aristotle to modern day and everything in between). They come from a wide range of cultures (even though all the cultures were Western, you still have ancient Greek, ancient Roman, British, American, etc.).They come from a wide range of fame (some of the excerpts are from the usual suspects like Lincoln, Franklin, and Teddy Roosevelt, but there are plenty of unknowns). And they come in a wide range of styles (quotes, essays, songs, excerpts from books, fables, illustrations, etc.).2. Judging by my dog-earing, I especially loved the chapter on self-discipline. Too often, people frame self-discipline as solely strength of will. In real life, will is like a muscle: it tires. So the solution is to cultivate good habits (virtue) so that you do good things with little effort.I particularly liked this passage from Charles Everett, who I had never heard of before:"Indeed, a bad habit is the last thing that most of us are afraid of. We think that we are acting always from our own choice, that it is no matter what we do now, because another time, whenever we wish, we can do differently. But all the while a certain habit is forming and hardening, until at last we find ourselves almost helpless. Thus, even our tastes, our amusements, our selection of books, the tendency even of our most secret thoughts, are becoming fixed, and we are becoming permanently the person we meant to be only for the moment."3. The passages are generally very inspiring. The quotes articulate what you already know in your gut to be true, and that's important.WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE1. I wish the authors had taken longer at the beginning to frame what manliness is. The idea of manliness as man vs. woman and manliness as man vs. boy/beast is very interesting. However, I think the authors come down too strongly on the man vs. boy/beast side. The authors' stance in the introduction is that the virtues themselves are neutral, but that men and women will express the same virtues in manly or womanly ways.I think it's important to recognize that while that is true to a great extent, it is also true that manliness is partly defined in opposition to womanliness. I wish the authors had dedicated a chapter to how manliness is different from womanliness, and how these differences shape how men should treat women and vice versa. To me, a book on manliness that doesn't examine sex differences and male-female relations is necessarily incomplete.SUMMARYI really enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

Absolutely amazing. I love Abigail's story no matter who's telling it, but Ann Burton's version is incredible. It's too bad the Bible doesn't say how such a wise, courageous and gifted woman like Abigail ended up married to the likes of evil Laban. Ann does an amazing job filling in the rest of the story. Perhaps her version is close to how it really happened, or perhaps not, but either way it is a brilliant and captivating read.

Great story of a Biblical character by a great author!

Ms. Burton must have been ovulateing during the last part of her book. At 1st I was in love with her Abigail. It felt historically real. She even used Hebrew terms which took me back in time. I loved how it didn't seem to be stained with western romantic ideas of Marriage. But then it turned and became hot and steamy and made Abigail look kind of trashy and not the honorable wife at all that I assumed she was to her fool husband Nabal. At one point, when she was not being a good wife at all, David says she is a good wife. I didn't get it. It was an interuption that stopped her from sexual sin not her own self control and convictions. I found myself having impure thoughts and desires of my husband that I would get if I read a typical romance novel. Over all it was a good book. Easy read, not bad deal for the price. Just be warned only adults should read this book and with caution of mental temptation.

Ann Burton has again stepped forward to tell the story of one of the women mentioned in the Bible. For too long these women, many of whom were leaders in their time have been hidden or denied their stories. Keep them coming. We need to know these heros stories.

This story might give us a little bit of background of what her life might be like before Abigail became David's wife. The Buble did not say much about her except that she kept David from killing her household and after her husband died, then she joined him to be his wife. A little too sensual between her and David although.

Abigail's Story by Ann Burton may have a cultural and somewhat historical setting but is definitely not a good portrayal of the Biblical characters. The author takes a lot of liberties in imagining both Abigail and David. Abigail actually puts a curse on Nabal - really? I would not recommend it.

A real page turner. I was engrossed. It was like one of those people who shout at the tv to tell the star not to open a door but I was like that to the book covering my eyes when I need them to read what will happen next. Ann really gives unique personalities to her characters, the strong biblical women they are.

Up until that point I was ready to rate it a 5 . There is no need for graphic sex in biblical fiction.

This book is full of cute mandalas both on white & black backgrounds. The paper seemed thin to me at first but it was easy to color on. I generally use a mixture of alcohol markers, gel pens & colored pencils. The pictures are adorable and look like a lot of fun to color. This is my first Tabitha Barnett book but I have already put several more on my wish list.

Great revised Catechism of the Catholic Church. Should be on the shelf of every Catholic!!!

Essential work if you want to understand what the Catholic church actually teaches. This book contains the necessary (imho) information for anyone who wants/needs to learn what Catholicism is all actually about. This book is divided into 4 (four) parts: profession of faith (creed), sacraments (7), life in faith, and prayer. Starting with a total explanation of the profession of faith (creed) and ends with the Lord's Prayer. Before reading this I had so many misconceptions about the Catholic church. While reading this the misconceptions disappear while the truth and beauty of the Catholic church appear.

Every Catholic who is a practicing Catholic should have one of these. And if youare not a practicing Catholic you might want to get this and ponder the book andsee if it can maybe change your life. We are talking about your soul and yourfamily's souls.....is there anything more important than that?Good luck and God Bless

The OED defines “catechism” as “An elementary treatise for instruction in the principles of the Christian religion, in the form of question and answer; such a book accepted and issued by a church as an authoritative exposition of its teaching….” This is a useful definition for understanding what kind of information can be found in the catechism.The Catechism of the Catholic Church was approved by Pope John Paul II in 1992. Obviously, the information contained in it was not new—it is based on the Bible, documents from church councils, encyclicals, previous versions of the catechism, and other Church documents that predate it by hundreds of years.The Catechism is meant to be used as a reference work. It’s organized clearly with an extensive table of contents and a glossary. I wouldn’t recommend trying to read it from cover to cover, though you certainly can if you’re of such a mind to do so.The Catechism is easy to find. It’s available for free on the Vatican website, though since I hate reading on the computer, I don’t find it more beneficial for anything save the search function. Printed copies are easily available used, new, paperback, hardcover, trade paperback, mass market paperback, e-reader, and any form you could want. As long as it says “Catechism of the Catholic Church,” it’s the right book. Be aware that theUnited States Catholic Catechism for Adults is a study supplement and does not contain the full text of the Catechism.

The Catechism is a remarkable, wonderful book. That said, if you are reading the Kindle edition cover to cover or want to look up any general chapter or topic in the table of contents, it works. However, the Catechism was specifically made to study. Each paragraph is numbered and this organization is used as a tool for finding specific teachings within larger topics very quickly. There is no way to do this in this edition--it is worthless for using to find specific citations referenced in other books. I hoped to use it as such to always have with me in a very manageable, lightweight, non-bulky format. It completely failed.

This is an excellent ten dollar investment for any Catholic, but especially for me as a theology major! The best single source on Catholic doctrine right on my Kindle. Now I don't have to lug around the large, hardcover first edition my dad bought me in high school. Not a good idea when you're dealing with Steubenville hills :) Also one of the best formated ebooks I've seen so far in my couple months as a kindle user. The cross referencing is linked (and there is a ton of cross referencing in there!) Whoever put this together for kindle really put the work into it and, for this book at least, I'm not complaining that it costs more than a paperback copy. Be careful though because the other version of the catechism on the kindle store, with the skinny white cover, put out by the "US Catholic Church" (last I checked the official name for that is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, so that doesn't seem legit to me...), is formatted horribly and I am very glad I sampled both and compared before purchasing!

I ordered two of these - one for my husband and one for me. We were both terribly disappointed when the glue holding the binding in place broke open the very first time we opened the book. I'm going to try ordering a different paperback version. Perhaps that will have a more satisfactory binding and we'll be able to use the Catechism for many years. This is why I gave this product a two star review.

A must read for the Catholic and the non Catholic. Reading the book will help the Catholic explain the faith and help the cradle Catholic understand it like never before. For non Catholics it will answer all questions about what Catholics believe and why they do the things they do. I have read it through twice and have significantly improved my understanding of the Catholic faith. It is not the Bible but it is certainly Bible based and referenced with God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit at the very center of it all.

This book is an invaluable resource for individuals who thirst learning or reinforcing the fundamentals of their faith. It reveals the answers to the questions that lead Christians and Catholics to fall astray or abandon their faith for other religious or spiritual beliefs. These questions include but are not limited to the importance of Mary in God's plan of salvation, the significance of the Lord's prayer, and the meaning of the sacraments. While the book is fairly lengthy, there is no shortcuts for the one who wants to live his faith and life according to God's will.

They hail from a variety of countries but are evacuated from Libya after the overthrow of Qadaffi. Ironically, it is an overthrow instigated by the West that brings the vagabonds to Berlin and his doorstep. Ironically too, Richard is/was a refugee of sorts—from the GDR or the East—who had to be integrated when the Wall falls and the West was triumphant.So begins a meditation on what it is to be German, but more importantly, what it means to be human. The author stirs personal memories of life in the GDR and national memories of the Holocaust--that time when Germany failed so conspicuously to welcome the stranger. Today the clash is not religionist but cultural, the Rationalist v. The Islamist--the sceptic v. the believer. It is a tribute to Erpenbeck’s skill as a storyteller that as the refugees tell their tales, Go, Went, Gone never bogs down in political “reportage”. The protagonists’ immediate plight are all unique in their way--heartrending predicaments. Rufu the loner, away from home and utterly friendless, even among fellow refugees. Arwad from Nigeria, who at home could never stay more than one night. They were too poor—there was never enough room, there was never enough food. The reader realizes this is not an of inventory of the material but a human lamentation—the very best times of in his life were characterized by want, without even space enough to remain together. It is a hardship incomprehensible to Westerners who have trouble tearing themselves away from their smart phones to engage those across a dinner table. And the gut-wrenching journey of Rashid whose two children drown when their boat capsizes, literally with the cliffs of Italy in sight. Travelers trapped in a modern-day Scylla and Charybdis. This is irony careening into tragedy. Literature, like history, repeats itself.From her immediate vantage point, Erpenbeck gazes backward, imagining the historical migration of those from the Caucuses, across the Middle East and Sahara, scores of generations later completing almost a perfect circle. The wars that displace refugees is a modern Illiad. The journey of Africans to Italy, Germany and perhaps beyond is an Odyssee as fantastic and culturally shocking to these men as the journey was to the Greek's wiliest hero. The experiences build becoming more than cultural stories, Richard's engagement and kindnesses become human touchstones. "Never before has the connection between space, time and words revealed itself to him so clearly as at this moment. The backdrop of the desert shows it off in sharp relief, but really it's always been just the same all over the world: without memory, man is nothing more than a bit of flesh on the planet's surface." In an eerie parallel, the government solution is to transport the refugees (with Germans complaining of the cost) to an out-of-sight location. Richard wonders if "this nation of bookkeepers" calculated the cost of transport in the 1940s as well.The author is never scolding, and always generous but also steely-eyed. Erpenbeck sees the refugees impossible quandary: "denying them permission to work while at the same time reproaching them for idleness." She is realistic though in her assertion that Hope may be in great abundance, but it is not enough to sustain us and after years of frustration some dare not even be able to muster its pitiful consolations. When hosting their German friend, Africans pile his plate high with food they deny themselves. Why? "if you eat too much you can become like an infant...too spoiled...you can never know what is coming...and you have to be able to endure that." Go, Went, Gone makes clear this life is a crapshoot with each of us undeserving of our lot whether it is a fortunate or a miserable one. Erpenbeck constantly returns to this and the themes of shared humanity and responsibility. Differences such language, skin color, and religion fall away in shared car rides, meals or piano lessons at Richard's home. Go, Went, Gone is a profoundly affecting and deeply moving story that couldn’t possibly be more timely or more relevant. It needs to be experienced—particularly by our Dear Leader.One of the best books I’ve read in 2017.

I love this book. It's my favorite of the year, and as a retired English professor, I read all the time. Every word is beautifully written (and translated). Each day I couldn't wait to get back to Richard and his heart-breaking, delightful, inspired group of African refugees. This novel is political, poetical, funny, philosophical, and just plain wonderful from beginning to end. Some friends will be receiving this one for Christmas!

Each African immigrant has a distinct voice and history, plus a sad future. The central character, Richard, slowly moves into their lives, a witness to the Byzantine chains of the laws that keep the immigrants from making a life. His life and work are interspersed with the stories of the engaging but victimized Africans. Erpenbeck is an excellent writer, who makes this all-too-true story about refugees throb with life. It has special meaning for Americans, although it is set in Germany and plays against the atrocities of WW II.

This book was written to depict the sad fate of African migrants who make their way to Germany after first landing in Italy - because of German rules their situation is precarious since their port of entry was not in Germany. Their humanity is celebrated, as is that of the recently retired German professor who befriends them and tries to help. The migrants are very much individuals, and the professor’s circle of friends are also important to the story. It takes some pages for the novel to hit its stride and there are some elements which did not contribute much for me: the drowned man in the lake, the professor’s past infidelity.

This is a courageous and imaginative narrative dealing with a current and heartbreaking crisis. Using an ex-professor as the virtual narrator gave depth to the topic, as did his character and his friends situations. The words from the mouths of the refugees were the most powerful part of the narrative.It is hard to imagine that a country with an ex- Nazi and ex-communist history could be held up as standard bearers for compassion for the EU's treatment of the emigrant crisis, and reading this makes me really pessimistic about the fate of others in so many other less tolerant countries.

The book made me reconsider my attitude towards the immigrants from countries ravaged by war or famine. It is very well written, it does show how difficult the lives of the refugees are, but also how difficult to cope it is for the natives of the country which accepts the influx of people from very different cultures.

A well-written book which describes the ongoing problem we have in the world with the refugees coming from Africa. the book sets the story in Berlin Germany with its history of the Nazim and killing of the jews. Beautifully written and masterfully translated, the allegorical presence of a nameless drowned man at the bottom of a lake (whose presence is revealed within the first pages of the book) serves to connect the current refugee crisis and the various responses to it to the different layers of modern German history of the last hundred years.
