I was looking for a chronological history of Uganda.This book , while full of references and is accurate , moves forward and backward in historical events , making it very confusing to read. It appears to be written as a research paper.Not recommended.

Excellent review of Ugandan history from precolonial times through today. Having studied abroad in Uganda and read several books on modern Uganda, I was already familiar with Uganda's postcolonial history. I was less familiar with Uganda's precolonial and colonial history, however, so this book filled a lot of gaps for me.Reid's book is not strictly chronological, as it starts out by reviewing Uganda's postcolonial history and then starts over again from precolonial times, with additional chapters on economic history and traditional institutions. He covers the history of interactions between the Buganda and Bunyoro kingdoms in particular, as well as that of other ethnic groups in what today constitutes Uganda and neighboring peoples. In the process, he makes a strong case that a national history of Uganda should cover precolonial roots as well as colonial and postcolonial history. Contrary to the tendency of many historians to treat colonial/postcolonial Africa as somewhat disconnected from precolonial history, modern Uganda cannot be fully understood unless this longer history is taken into account. Rather than viewing the nation of Uganda as a product of British colonialism and postcolonial developments alone, modern Uganda should be viewed as the culmination of several historical processes, many of which were well underway prior to the arrival of the British.Well written and an enjoyable read, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in delving into Ugandan history. It might be a little much if you're looking for an introductory history, but if you already have a general grasp of Ugandan history this will help you get the more complete story.

This is a very well written book of solos, not so difficult as to discourage but challenging enough to stretch ones range and abilities.

Excellent arrangement for trumpet. Beautiful playing by Phil Smith.

I do not like this quite as much as the next volume- more great hymns, but I wouldn't be without it as it also adds to my repetoire, and I enjoy playing different arrangements of the common hymns. Thank you.

Challenging arrangements for Junior High or High School, but great for older players as well.

James Curnow does another great job of arranging very inspirational hymns. He has a gift for taking simple hymns and giving them depth and texture beyond the written word. I very much like how he adds the optional cue notes that make passages a little easier for chops that may not be quite up to the task, but still maintains the depth and texture without over simplifying the entire song. The play-along CD is a very nice bonus! It's very cool to play along with Philip Smith or just listen to him play!

I have not found a whole lot of quality literature for solo trumpet with tasteful accompaniment. The solos are well written and fun to play. Some of the accompaniments were more difficult to follow, but overall I have enjoyed playing and performing from the book.

This was an incredibly insightful book about the social lives of children. As a parent of two boys--10 and 7--I saw many of the situations they experience in the book. It also helped relieve my anxiety about how to deal with the inevitable conflict that comes from interaction with other children, especially in school. One of the most valuable insights was the idea that parents should not "interview for pain". In other words, don't repeatedly ask about the trouble your child has had with kid x because it reinforces the negative, and does not acknowledge the fact that kids get over hurts far more quickly than adults. Highly recommended for parents and teachers.

This book is so powerful. As a parent or educator, it takes you on a step by step journey of the stages your child will encounter as he/she grows up. I learned so much. I would recommend this book to anyone who is going to have a baby. Be prepared. I wish I had read it before my child was born rather than years after.

I have read many books about bullying among preteens in the last couple years. But this is the first one I've read that gives true insight to the multilayered dynamics of the kids' relationships -- how each impacts the other. Why they are "mean" one day and loving the next. Friendships that adults may see as dysfunctional (and would/should flee), but why kids have learned to cope with them, with compassion and understanding and how important these friendships are to their development. Some ("friendships") should, of course, be avoided, but many cannot be and should not be. The real-life examples cited in the book are realistic scenarios which allow the reader to relate. This book was recommended to all middle school parents by our school principal, so I felt obligated to take a look at it. But reading it also gave me insight to how well he (the principal) must understand our children at this age -- and that has been a real comfort. After reading this book, I have a better understanding of how to empower my children, how to help them identify and avoid potential conflicts or victimizations -- without adult involvement. Of course much of this comes from maturity -- of which they have more this year than last -- and can thus now navigate these situations better on their own. Importantly, this also changes the balance of power/relationships and the group dynamics. As a result, I am more relaxed knowing the children feel more confident and empowered. I highly recommend this book.

After watching a feature documentary on the power of social relationships to shape a child's life into adulthood, I was already interested in learning more. This book filled the bill, especially the sections which revealed how children use power (and even bullying) to both include some children and exclude others. I think most of us remember the playground bullies but what this book did was show how parents can help to change bullying behavior, give their children skills to handle bullies and lessen the damaging effects of their behavior. This book focuses on far more than bullies and those who purchase it will find it filled with rich insights into the social world of children and how they view their friendships and connections with other children.

This book really knows where children are coming from and is well written. The author explains "child speak" and what they really mean by their behaviors and remarks. A must read for parents and teachers!

Got this book for my daughter who has two boys and she was very pleased with the information and feels that she learned a great deal that will assist her in understanding the boys as they mature

While they discuss "Big-O" notation and assume a general familiarity with math, they don't overwhelm the reader. (You can even borrow the code without needing a math degree to understand it.) I learned as much about Perl as I did about data structures and algorithms.There are great examples of creating and accessing nested data structures, references, etc. as well as the map and sort that makes them really stand out. By the time you are half way through the book you'll be an expert in slicing and dicing any hierarchy of arrays, hashes, and references. Other books cover these topics, but using them with data structures and algorithms makes them really stick. I may never write a sort algorithm, but my code is much tidier now.

It's another one of those useful blue O'Reilly books with an animal on the front. A wolf, in this case. This one starts with basic data structures in Perl and then presents reusable algorithms of increasing complexity. The authors intend it for two types of readers: "...those who want to cut and paste solutions and those who want to hone their programming skills." Attempting to serve both audiences, the authors attempt to be both practical and theoretical.The book begins with basic and advanced data structures. The next series of chapters each address basic programming tasks such as sorting, searching, and working with sets, matrices, graphs, and strings. The final set of chapters is organized by topic area, covering geometric algorithms, number systems, number theory, cryptography, probability, statistics, and numerical analysis. A concluding appendix suggests additional readings.The format and quality are familiar to readers of other O'Reilly books. It is a good, readable exploration of algorithms implemented in Perl. You will need to get the latest version of Perl on your own. No problems with that, either.

Mastering Algorithms with Perl is an intermediate to advanced text describing traditional algorithms and data structures through Perl. It assumes a basic understanding of Perl. And while the average reader will be able to progress through the better part of the book with no background in computer science, the last third of the book requires at least a passing familiarity with Calculus, advanced mathematical notation, and covers topics from the vantage those already initiated to Probability, Statistics, Cryptology, and Number Theory.That said, the book has something for everyone. Beginner and Intermediate level Perl programmers will find the book's materials information dense but approachable. Advanced programmers will find a well written refresher illustrating familiar concepts in Perl. Given the breadth of the book and the language specific insights, even experience Perl programmers should expect to learn a thing or two.Topics covered include: linked lists, circular linked lists, garbage collection, doubly-linked lists, infinite lists, binary trees, heaps, binary heaps, janus heaps, sorting, searching, sets, matrices, graphs, strings, geometric algorithms, number systems, number theory, cryptography, probability, statistics, and numerical analysis.I've found that while the book is somewhat daunting, it goes down best a little bit at a time: read a chapter, then work through the examples. The first time I attempted to read the book I got about a third of the way through before stopping, scanning the rest, and putting it back on the shelf. A couple months later as I was working on a problem involving graphs and trees, the book came back down. And as interesting and complicated problems present themselves, I often find myself reaching for it.It covers an awful lot in 701 tightly packed pages. Have you ever wondered how regular expressions work? Hashes? Insights into their internal workings are in there. It is an excellent reference and fills a much needed gap. No other Perl book comes close to the breadth and depth coverage of these materials. That said, early printings of the first edition had a tremendous number of errors and typos. If you buy it used, I would highly recommend visiting the O'Reilly site to read the errata. ...

As expected a broad overview of several areas with a few gems. I found particular value in the chapters on matrices, stats, and numerical methods.

If you have to learn Perl in your production life for any reason, I think this book would be one of the best option that you can have. At least, you can enrich your knowledge of algorithms, and that is worth to pay for.

What you expect

When I am searching for an informational source I have used Amazon many times for that purpose. This book has been a good resource as most of the 'Dummie' books are. When I need a good overview I rely on this network of manuals. The Software documentation and education resources are excellent and I have found the whole process is very rewarding. I have been very satisfied with the product and the delivery. I would use again!

Book appeared to be used. Useable but not in great condition. Was very concerned when I opened the book and on the first page there was a name and Social Security Number hand written! In today's world probably not a good thing.

Competitive pricing and timely delivery.

This came in pretty decent condition for a used book, and I was surprised to see that the disk was included. Made an excellent Christmas present for someone interested in getting into coding.

Back when I bought this book I had the need to make web pages for my own personal use. HTML for Dummies made this possible without me taking classes to learn how.

It is also necessary to buy a book on CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). All the rest of the books can be junk.

Very helpful info in the text - but the floppy disk support was a collectors item - not helpful at all :D - But for what I needed it was excellent
