Preface to the Second Edition Several exciting major developments have changed the field of applied superconductivity since 1981, when the first edition of this text was published. New materials and fabrication methods and innovative device and circuit concepts have made profound changes in the way we practice in this field. The most public of the changes was the discovery in 1986 of high-temperature oxide superconductors, several of which quickly were shown to have transition temperatures above the boiling point of nitrogen. Equally important but less publicly obvious was a pair of key innovations in the fabrication of superconductive integrated circuits. A way of making high quality, durable niobium tunnel junctions and a procedure to avoid any processing steps intervening in the fabrication of the junctions, has led to stable, well controlled integrated circuits. New concepts in superconductive detectors and mixers has made superconductivity the technology of choice in millimeter wave radio astronomy. And in the digital field, innovative ideas for single flux quantum logic and for hybridization with semiconductor devices have brought new opportunities. To date, the high-temperature superconductors have had their major impacts in magnetometers and microwave receivers. The greatly reduced refrigerator burden when using these materials compared with the metal superconductors has stimulated very extensive research on making cables for extremely high field magnets, and optimism for use in power systems. The basic theory of superconductivity we presented in the 1981 edition is still very useful. There is, as yet, no accepted theory of electron pairing in the high-temperature superconductors and much of the practical work, including that on high-temperature superconductors, still relies on the theories in this book. Phenomenological theories have been developed to explain the behavior of high-temperature superconductors. And the low-temperature metallic superconductors continue to be of major importance, not least because of the success of Nb-Ti alloy in MRI magnets, by far the largest commercial market for superconductors. The low-temperature superconductor wire technology has matured over the past two decades and continues to make impressive progress. On the other hand, the fast pace of development of the physics and technology of the high-temperature superconductors presents us with a difficult choice. We have chosen to present a practical view of the current position, but freely admit that new results in this rapidly changing field may lead to a complete reappraisal. Between us two co-authors, we have had several decades of experience with applications of superconductivity, both in the university and in industry. We have attempted to infuse the presentations, particularly of the electronics part, with our practical views that we hope will be helpful to the readers. We thank several colleagues in the field including John Clarke, James Lukens, V. K. Kaplunenko, William McGrath, Oleg Mukhanov, Paul Richards, Andrew Smith, Stephen Whiteley, Yongming Zhang, who were very helpful with suggestions on sections in their areas of special expertise and in providing valuable data. This is an excellent review book. I'm a PGY1 in ENT and so far it's been a great review for in-service. Reads well (unlike KJ Lee which is just bullet points) and broadly overviews most ENT topics. It's not very in depth, but it's hard to cover all ENT topics in less than 1000 pages (which this book is just shy of). I like the paperback as I can just toss it in my bag. My one BIG gripe with this book is the terrible picture quality in the radiology section. Somebody wrote an amazing 100+ page H&N radiology section and then they fill it with completely unusable images. The images (esp MRI) are so dark as to be useless. Nonetheless, this is the best ENT review book I've used and I would still buy it again.

While this is not a Bailey's or Cummings' textbook, Current Otolaryngology is a nice place to start for a medical student or a junior otolaryngology resident. I would not recommend this as a primary text, but more an overview of the topics that are included within this book.

Some DisorganiZation and areas where specificity was lacking. Excellent for intern/primary care level. Keep in mind I was getting pimped daily. Wish I had bought this book much earlier!

Maybe a little out of date, but an excellent map to have for Belize - waterproof, durable, easy to read, seems pretty accurate, and a great value. It is well worth the money - and then some- for driving and getting around in Belize. If you have been and driven there, you will appreciate this map. An invaluable asset in Belize, unless you are a native.

Only buy this guide if you have lots of money. The only accommodations and restaurants listed are really expensive. Other guides have much more information about attractions.

Matthew Glass and India Steele are back in this 4th installment of the fantasy series that also has touches of romance. This series is very connected from volume to volume so it should be read in order. The main fantasy element is magic. Magic and magicians are controversial in London. Some doubt its existence. Others fear or resent its existence. And still others believe that magic and magicians should be secretly sought and purged from society. This episode is beginning to feel like much of the same with Matthew and India dashing about London in the mid-1800s searching for information and people that might lead them to a more permanent cure for Matthew. Unfortunately, not much is resolved. In addition, the personal relationships between the characters are not moving forward at all. Perhaps the earlier books were more interesting because they each were focused on one area of magic, and more new things were happening with the magic.. Or perhaps I just find Eddie to be petty and uninteresting as a villain and have tired of India’s snippy interchanges with Chronos. The full supporting cast is in this book, but they have little to so they are reduced almost to caricatures of themselves. This review is not to be overly negative. I will still give it four stars and I will still buy the next volume. However, I did not enjoy this book as much as the ones that preceded it in the series. I do think that Glass and Steele could survive as a series if Matthew’s magic problem is solved and the romance brought into the open. Failure to move forward is more likely to kill it.

Oh, bother. I seriously feel like Pooh after reaching the end of this fourth book of the Glass and Steele series, but only because it's ended. Much of the mystery that surrounds India has now come to light. I can't say I'm disappointed in the least. There was a bit of a twist in there that blindsided me. I wasn't sure whether to gasp or curse. Spoiler alert, I did both. As with the previous two, this novel closed many doors, leaving a few open for the next book and a place for it to pick up. The biggest mystery, at least for me, is what will happen between Mr. Glass and Miss Steele? The pace of this book was much like the "The Mapmaker's Apprentice", but far better and more satisfying. Still no explosion, but I didn't expect one for this book, it wasn't necessary. However, in saying that . . . Willie is up to something. This both excites me and adds to the urgency of the next book.

I feel like the books are getting better. While the first one interested me just enough to read the next, I now find myself waiting impatiently for the next installment. The duo are finally making headway on the problem of Matt's watch, which seemed to have been a minor subplot in the last two books. The other characters are becoming more fleshed out and the tangle of magicians, police and family are coming together into a more clearly defined picture.In this novel, Willie has a secret and she's not sharing it with anybody. Like me, I'm sure readers have a good guess at what's going on. Miss Glass seems to be more influenced by her rowdy housemates, all for the good. Meanwhile, Glass and Steele are on the hunt for the diary of a doctor magician in the hopes of finding the spell to fix Glass' watch but as usual it seems everyone is trying to stop them, but everyone has their own motivation. The final plot twist I didn't see coming.

I was so excited when I started this series - I stumbled upon the first book and couldnt put it down and I immediately purchased the second when finished. The second book did not let me down - I was hooked again in Indias and Matts adventures with the gang and the hinted romance building between the two. And I did the same thing I bought the 3rd book with no hesitation, but the charm wasnt there and I put it away several times and found myself skipping pages just to get to the end. When I did I wasnt sure I wanted to buy this the fourth book in the series, which for some odd reason I mistakenly thought was the last, but I really wanted to know what would happen to everyone so I went ahead and bought it. Again it was a slow read and I eventually finished but I felt like the spark had gone out and there was more filler than story.I gave it 3 stars because I like the characters and wanted to genuinely join them in their adventures and mishaps but I will not buy the rest of the series, bools 3 and 4 were too much of a disappointment.

I love this series and the characters but I guess I'm impatient. I'm getting tired of waiting for a resolution. Some kind of progress has to be made in finding the physician magician or with India and Matt's relationship before people get bored. I almost feel like the story is at the same place if was 2 books ago.

I am thoroughly enjoying these novels by C.J. Archer. This is the 4th installment of her Glass & Steele series. They seem to improve exponentially with each additional book.India & Matt are a great collaboration. They're tenacious. Always digging until they have the whole truth. Not bits and pieces that fit their needs. The truth is the point of their investigations. No matter how unpalatable it may become.I enjoy them together and don't quite understand why India feels she is not deserving of Matt's attentions & affections.He obviously does not feel superior to her. He admires her brain and her tenacity. With they combine their ideas and hypothesis they are generally able to draw the correct conclusion.My conclusion? They're a marvelous team that should remain together. That are stronger together than apart!

I loved Matt in this book, he had so much more life in him. I admit I found her to be a tad stupid and annoying in this book and found myself saying out loud "no! Don't be a trusting fool!". Looking forward to the next and really hope some loose ends will be tied up as well.

I have bought every volume of these being sold my mother-in-law loves that they are big enough for her to see

we bought for my mother who rejected this completely because the questions were so weak with slang and two word answers (INA) something ___ bottle for example. She said "we're smarter than this book" and she is 84.

Love these puzzles. They are enjoyable to do and are challenging, but not so much that you can't figure them out.

It was enjoyable to have such a varied amount of types of cross word puzzles.
