This is a very solid introductory textbook on both functional programming and Haskell as a language, and probably among the better ones on either topic -- with the caveat that I haven't read through everything that's on the market, including Bird's own prior textbooks.The text reads smoothly, and is far less dry than Hutton's. This is not necessarily something you're looking for in a textbook, but I found this to be a pleasant departure from the common practice.The approach taken here is heavy on equational reasoning, and the author is not afraid to delve into topics often perceived as arcane -- such as performance optimization of Haskell programs. The book does shy away from discussing rigorous methods for establishing asymptotic complexity under lazy evaluation, but that's probably a good thing in an introductory textbook, and you'd want to refer to Okasaki's PFDS or somesuch for the gory details anyway. Overall, the book takes more of a computer science-y approach, which I find to be slightly preferrable to the alternative "let's start hacking and think about getting out of the mess later" route, though some clever combination of the two might be superior to either.Another win is that the fairly elaborate exercises come with full solutions by the author, printed at the end of each chapter. This makes Thinking Functionally superbly suited for self-study, but probably makes it less appropriate as a basis for a course at a brick-and-mortar school.The book seems to expect a certain degree of mathematical maturity, and may be moving too fast for people without a couple of years of CS, math, EE or similar experience under their belt.I have fairly lukewarm feelings about the book's occasional tendency to borrow features from the future without explaining those, but this doesn't seem like an oversight on the author's part, and more of a principled approach along the lines of "you don't need to understand the details right now, we'll get there eventually, but for now just trust me." I cannot attest whether this works for the target audience or not, as I was fairly familiar with most of the material covered already.Lastly -- and this something of a pet peeve of mine -- I really rather hate the idea of discussing folds without even mentioning unfolds, but oh well. Let's face it, that's all too common anyway, and people live with it somehow. This is just about the only point where Hutton's book does win over Thinking Functionally.

This book is an important landmark in the evolution of Haskell and functional programming.When we speak of “functional” programming, we’re talking about mutation free computation: you can create all the new state you want; but you can’t mutate any existing state.This has a number of advantages that don’t fall on deaf ears these days: one is that mutation free computations are automagically thread safe; which is music to the ears of anyone that’s had to grapple with threading, concurrency, or parallel programming issues.However, another (perhaps more important consideration) is that when we don’t have mutation to worry about, we are free to do substitutions, and manipulate functions (a.k.a. “code”) in algebraic-like ways; and that is the focus of this book. Richard Bird is one of the pioneers of using equational reasoning to refactor existing code and to prove that one code expression is equivalent (or not equivalent) to a different code expression (wherein we are perhaps interested in reliability or improving performance without sacrificing semantic meaning). Or, to prove what a code expression really means; and to thereby be able to generalize it or otherwise reason about it.If you are new to seeing code manipulated in algebraic-like ways, it can seem like black magic until one gets acclimated to thinking about code in a purely functional way; and Haskell, as a programming language, is uniquely suited to that task.This book claims to be a replacement for other works, but it does not cover some material that was covered in past books which I consider very worthwhile.In the way of disclosure I want to mention that I read this book cover to cover (including the index); but did not do any of the exercises (other than to read through them). I also read the following cover to cover: “Introduction to Functional Programming using Haskell second edition” (Bird) and “Algebra of Programming” (Bird, De Moor); both of which I thought were outstanding.One criticism I have of this book is that in the last chapter’s concluding remarks, a pure functional style is recommended over monadic programming (especially when there is no concern about interacting with the outside world). That left me wanting more elaboration: there are many uses of monads; one being to “lift” partial functions to more sophisticated total counterparts (i.e. Maybe). Is there a “purely” functional equivalent for such purposes that is preferable to monads; or is that use of monads perfectly reasonable? (I presume the latter, but would have liked more discussion on the matter.) Also I would have liked to see more examples of how monadic programming can cause difficulties for equational reasoning that can be removed by refactoring to a more purely functional style. A past book did grapple with some negative aspects of monads (like the way they can cause problems when trying to compose them and enforce a coherent order in how things get evaluated). More material on the “sin bin” nature of monads and their potential overuse would be nice.Another comment: I missed the material on bignums; albeit I think the approach taken in a prior publication was flawed because it didn’t “normalize” numbers from least significant (in head position) to most significant (which makes everything much harder, IMO).I hope to see a sequel to this book as the author’s understanding (and the topic itself) evolve.

Superb and unique introduction, but not for beginners.It shows you what is THE functional programming, but doesn't teach you how to do it.Decent and inspiring, and not explaining much.Anyway, You should read it. It tells you things which you wouldn't hear anywhere else.But the problem is "What Next?". Yeah, There is no royal road.

This is a very difficult book to read, physically. The publisher has chosen such thin inexpensive paper that printing from the reverse side of the page -always- intrudes (in reverse black blobs) on every single page you're trying to read. This is very distracting and makes the book a trial to read. It's a shame that Cambridge University Press has chosen such a cheap-skate route because it's clear this book has much to offer. And just for a few pennies. Shame.

Contracts 101 has all the basics needed to understand Services Agreements and it includes examples from a Buyer and Seller perspective and excercises. I recommend it for non lawyers in the commercial management /contracts area.

I am an attorney and I bought this book last year because I changed jobs and starting working as in-house counsel. I found the book to be very helpful. It covers just about everything you need to be aware of when reviewing agreements. It also comes with checklists that keep me on track when going over any type of service agreement. I use the lists all the time.

Author Helen Salyer Perkins grew up in a very large extended family where most of the women were excellent cooks, Helen was exposed to many excellent dishes and recipes. As a result, when she married and became mother to three growing and always hungry boys, Helen learned to make delicious - at least most of the time - meals for them. Over the years, she added many and varied recipes and recipe books to her collection. For two years in the early 2000's, Helen was host of Kitchen Korner, a cooking program on WNVI, a local radio station in North Vernon, Indiana. She would review and pass on various recipes to her listeners five days a week. Many days, a guest was in the studio who shared their favorite recipe. A couple of the most memorable guests were former Indiana Governor Edgar Whitcomb and now Vice President of the United States Mike Pence. Both were just delightful and very interesting guests. Helen was born and grew up in Ohio but moved to Indiana nearly 40 years ago. The boys are grown now and have families of their own, but they contact her frequently to get the recipes for their favorite dishes. The most requested being "Bread Dressing / Stuffing". She has spent the past year sorting and organizing her stash of recipes in a concerted effort to pass them on for others to enjoy!

It is estimated that 65,000 Greek Jews were killed in the Holocaust. From the ghetto of Corfu, about 2,000 Jews were transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, with only 121 surviving to return to their homeland. One Corfu Jewish family somehow escaped to the tiny island of Erikousa where they were hidden and never betrayed despite the dogged intimidation of Nazi soldiers. The author had relatives who harbored the family and she was determined to relate the history of these events and to find out what happened to the descendants of the sheltered family. In a tragic twist of fate, two relatives of the author and another woman where shot by a neo-Nazi on the campuses of Jewish facilities in Overland Park, Kansas in 2014. The shooter wanted to feel what it was like to kill Jews, yet the trio of victims were Christians.The author's persistence and the aide of an on-line genealogical service, help her locate the descendants of the saved Corfu family. There is much repetition in this memoir. There are also some spelling and capitalization errors. Despite these minor flaws, this is a history worth tracing. As the author notes these events underscore the Talmudic saying, "If you save one life, you save the world."

I don't want to be overly cynical in my review. In short, this book tells a useful narrative. I am simply giving three stars because:1. That's about what it is, imo.2. When I saw that this book was 85 percent five stars, I had heightened expectations. And after reading it, I can see why it's that high.A. There is a certain group of purveyors who over-rate anything holocaust related in their zeal.B. This author's own circle of TV network associates probably rated this high and helped to artificially inflate the numbers.As for the work, it tells a good core story; but like a true TV exec, she knows how to fluff it all up with dramatic sequences, likely embellished accounts, and other tricks of the trade. If you're a serious history seeker, you'll find this to be but a morsel (to perhaps use a not very sensitive metaphor). If you are looking for humanistic flare, then this could be the story for you, all the same. And as I read it on audio, I'll say that the narrator did a fine job. And if the price is right, then maybe you roll the dice on this one if something piques your interest.I'll end on a blunt note. I put a lot of stock in ratings (4 and 5 stars) when choosing a book (relative to price). For me, this is probably a book that would be more on par with something in the forty to fifty percent five star range. And in some quality, it is maybe even comparable to books hitting the sixties. But eight-five percent is a farce, and that is why I am tempering the ratings that are out there. Otherwise, I probably would've just left this one alone. I usually just tend to rate stuff at either extreme and leave the middle stuff be.

This book was touted as a story of a Greek island community protecting and hiding a Jewish family during World War II, but that was, disappointingly, not the story told. While the fact that this Greek island community did indeed help hide and feed a Jewish family during the war was brought up over and over throughout the book, their actions were not described nor dramatized in any way. Rather, this book focused on the author and her emotional, and often self-absorbed, journey to find any surviving members of this Jewish family and to honor the Greek islanders for their bravery and courage. While the author does introduce you to a number of interesting people with worthwhile personal stories and ultimately has a positive and hopeful message, I bought this book with the expectation of reading a very different account.

This book is beautifully written. I finished it over a week ago and am still thinking about the people in this book and how their lives intertwined. I loved getting so invested in the process of piecing everything together and was every bit taken on the emotional roller coaster of finding out if it would all come together in the end. You get pulled into the tragedies but absolutely are left with the positive and good that can come from such horrors. Although you do not need to read When The Cypress Whispers to thoroughly enjoy this book doing so adds another level to the experience. I strongly recommend this book!

Wonderful true story of mankind's care for mankind. Several surprises also appear in the author's life in her search for the verification of her grandmother's oft-told story. Occasionally it is soporific. The story touches the heart and opens the mind. Mrs. Corporon gives us much information about life as it was and as it is on the tiny island from whence her ancestors hail. Absolutely worth the read.

I will buy paperback for my Greek and genealogy friends. Keep tissue near as the tears will flow! Recommend for all who like a nice well written story.

This is a testament that light overcomes darkness. It is a story of courage and human connection, unbreakable bonds that are heard and felt in multiple generations. Sensational. A big thank you to the author for investing and sharing.
