Reading this section made me reflect and strengthened my resolve to observe the precepts.Using killing, the first non-virtuous action of the body, as an example. According to The Great Treatise, killing will result in short lifetime and many illnesses. The environmental effects of killing are described below:From the nonvirtuous action of killing, such things in the external environment as food and drink, medicine, and fruits will have little strength, be ineffective, have little potency and power or, being difficult to digest, will induce illness. Hence, most living beings will die without living out their expected life spans.The Great Treatise states clearly that killing has negative impact on one’s health. This is consistent with the law of karma: when we shorten a life, our life will be shortened; when we take a life, our life will be taken. Knowing that non-Buddhists might have trouble with this way of thinking, I wanted to see if I can find evidence to make better explain how karma works. While I have faith in karma, others might want “proof” that killing is harmful to one’s health. Then an idea came to me, why not look up statistics on various professions and see if jobs that require killing shortens the life of those who are in that line of work?What I found was astounding: according to Bureau of Labor Statistics’ National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, fishing industry has the highest rate of fatal occupational injuries. At 118 workplace deaths per 100,000 fishermen, a fisherman is more than 30 times more likely to die on job than average! Grouping agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting as a sector, statistics showed that the rate of fatal occupational injuries was seven times higher than average.I connected this finding with what I learned about the lifespan of vegetarians: vegetarians live 7 to 9 years longer than non-vegetarians. While there many views and debates on why vegetarian diet leads to longer lifespan, statistics show unambiguously that vegetarians live significantly longer. This is consistent with Buddhist teaching: those who refrain from killing will live longer.Read this book! Just one section changed my life!

This work (3 volumes) presents the entire buddhist path to enlightenment with clear explanations.The translation isn't perfect, however. They separate every tibetan name with "-", like Tsong-kha-pa. And spell in a somewhat strange spelling quite different from other books, like Dromtönpa here it's Dröm-dön-ba. Thankfully they haven't done it with the sanskrit names.Some other words in translation like "religious" practice, I think would fit better something like "spiritual" practice. But none of these complaints actually impairs the study and practice of this marvelous book! May all beings be free of suffering!

Deeply interesting writing. It is genuine Buddhism as the motivation to become a useful human being through such an interior exploration of oneself, without any deference to any lineage but the Truth in Buddha's thought for those who commit or take some degree of refuge in it.

Very practical and accessible instructions. The Lam Rim is not a sugarcoated Buddhist Text that tells you of the roses that bloom and the bliss that emerges from constant meditation. It is actually the equivalent of a guidebook on the path and serves contemplative practice hand in hand. These books are true pearls of meditation and life literature. In fact, I use the parts on choosing a teacher etc. etc. for my daily life (we all end up choosing someone to emulate whether it may be Nelson Mandela or Mahatma Gandhi or Richard Dawkins). Wonderful Wonderful!!

Incredibly readable. Excellently done.Introduction by Thurman is a treat as well.Must by all three volumes!It is a voluminous collection, but an invaluable reference and guide for the serious practitioner or student of the Geulg tradition.

As a practicing Mahayana Buddhist this treatise has provided the level of detail I was looking for when compared to many other titles on the path which are more generalistic in their deliveryA major addition to my library. One I can't see being very far from handAlso, recommended to those whose interest in Buddhism is more scholarly than spiritual. This is an outdated book. I would expect that considering it was written in 2000. On p. 179, suggestion 30, Ideas for Party Favors, it says, "Gift Certificates to Blockbuster".

Didn't know very much about Jonny, but this book really gave me a inside look at one of my favorite athletes. From his early years and how he started in the professional game, to the last few years of his career in France...it was a very good read. i would recommend this to a fellow rugger, or anybody familiar with the the game and the man.

Awsome to hear his commitment, dedication and also the struggles he faces with himself. He doesn't talk much about his life outside of rugby (relationships and family life) which is good although a little bit more definitely wouldn't of harmed and could of helped understand him a bit more. Although I respect the fact that he wants to keep that to himself. Great book none the less.

I liked this book a lot, but as with other reviewers Jonny is one of my favorite Rugby players, ever, so my review may also be a bit askew. The book is terribly honest which goes both ways, it goes from quite hilarious to really sad, over and over again, in no particular order. I both languished with his falls, and his many injuries, and yet rose with the many triumphs, from World cup glory 2003, (to which I also own a copy of the World Cup dvd, which is glorious indeed and well worth watching or even owning) to his very joyous satisfaction and success with Toulon.I particularly like the way that it ended, not the 2011 world cup loss which I languished over as it happened, but that Jonny finally seemed to be happy with his life and to have accomplished enough to simply enjoy what he does. Then to end with a lot of pictures with little tidbits of stories of all the people you have been reading about, I thought was a wonderful addition to make it a bit more personal after so much struggle to simply enjoy life for what it is and what it brings. It is an uplifting ending for what seems a genuinely good bloke to use a good English, (that is British) colloquial phrase.This will not be a book for everyone, but if you are a Rugby fan and wish to read about some of the back ground stuff to the sport, and one of the greatest fly half's ever, then I think it is certainly worth a read, and you may even find a few laughs along the way.Thank you Jonny for your life on record to read and learn from, as much as you may from such a book, I do truly appreciate it.

I enjoyed this book as it gave us a glimpse into the commitment Jonny put into his game. It is incredible that he is still the number 2 all time test points scorer despite all of the injuries he suffered, physical and mental.

So awesome to get into the mind of one of the best rugby players the world has ever seen.Able to relate to his inner securities, yet he performed so well for so many years without ever knowing before reading this honest account of his feelings and nerves.Awesome insight into the perfectionist Jonny.

A great book about one of rugby's greatest players. Wilko gives the reader his firsthand account of his drive to become the best player in the world.

Kindle Unlimited though got it on a freebie day, when got a heads up from the writer. Pretty sure I agreed to read this for possible review on LibraryThing.This book collection was very informative and very gross; I will have to let my kid read it, as he is all in to serial killers, including Dexter yes, but the even deadlier real ones. Oh, and by 'kid' I mean my kid, he's grown now, so js. Noticed the writer's amazon list of books; there are lots of grossly interesting books and sets in there. Not to slight this collection, in which this also lots of grossly interesting stories, so buckle in and keep hold of the barf bag if you don't have a strong stomach.

I didn't even bother to read more than 30% of the mess. On the plus side, it does provide a short list of names to use for further research, if that's your goal. Though the Amazon picture gives the impression of a 15 volume anthology, in reality, it might contain information from 15 short magazine articles. The editing appears to be near nonexistent, likely no one even proofread. Just... sad.

I am a true crime junkie - I've been reading true crime books since I was 10 and read "Helter Skelter" and I thought I'd heard/read about every serial killer there was. Nope - I read about quite a few cases I'd never heard of before in this collection. While Jack Rosewood doesn't go into depth, he tells you all the important points about the case. I've read other "snippet" books, where the author has done nothing but regurgitate information you can find out yourself by doing an internet search - not these! I truly enjoyed this collection and I think you will, too :)

No real background on the serial killers. Books very short. It felt like this could have been just one book, with a chapter devoted to each person.

A decent brief overview of a number of serial killers. I received a free download of the book in exchange for an honest review. I do not wish to discourage an aspiring writer especially since I hope to have some things I have written published and I'm sure my writing isn't perfect either. Unfortunately, The Serial Killer Books suffered from awkward attempts at nonlinear storytelling and a number of factual errors, including dates contradicted one paragraph to the next. A good editing and fact checking would greatly improve the book as many of the errors are just a need for a good reread of the work before publication to fix obvious typos, incorrect autocorrections and very awkwardly phrased passages. The author is obviously knowledgeable and interested in the subject but would be well served by a professional editor.

If you like true crime stories then you will enjoy this book. The stories are short but give you the information that you need. I had no idea there were so many serial killers in the world. I must admit I have found some typos in the the book but not enough to make me stop reading. Can't wait to start reading my next Rosewood book. Enjoy.

I enjoy reading true crime & try to read everything I get my hands on. This set of books was well written & researched. It talks about how the killers started out in life all the way to being caught & the punishment they received for the crimes committed.

I've been reading true crime novels since I was in high school (in the 80s), when one summer's day, I needed a book to read while suntanning by the pool, and my best friend handed me The Stranger Beside Me by Anne Rule. I assumed I'd pretty much read at least *something* about every serial killer - either by way of a book, or just falling down the rabbit hole of late night Wikipedia searches. I was surprised, and pleased, to learn how very wrong I was in this assumption! Jack Rosewood writes in a straight forward manner which I found very appealing, and at the end of each section there are smaller entries about others in the same genre (stranglers, spree killers, cannibals, etc.) including some lesser known serial killers, several of which I'd never heard of at all. I definitely and wholeheartedly recommend this box set for anyone who's interested in the grim, dark, and often incredibly sad (Eileen Wournos) side of human nature. Two thumbs way up!

When I decided to take on the responsibility of librarian at my church, I naturally sought out the most helpful books on the subject of church librarianship. Somewhat surprisingly, what I found were slim pickings indeed. The most promising title I found was this one, by Betty McMichael, which I was finally able to obtain through interlibrary loan. Since this third edition dates back to 1998, I obviously knew that it wasn't going to be on the cutting edge in terms of technology, but it still has plenty of great advice and examples for a beginning church librarian like me. Some of the chapters are quite outdated, which is unfortunate in a way because McMichael goes into great detail (with plenty of example images) for such things as cataloging books the old-fashioned way; even the new media she talks about has now become old media. One of the strengths of this book, though, is the author's emphasis on making the library a vital part of the church ministry - and that's something that will never become outdated.In essence, this book discusses both the practical and the spiritual aspects of building and/or growing a church library. The author emphasizes the importance of the library's location in terms of attracting church patrons, lists a number of tools and resources a church librarian might need, provides tips on securing adequate financing for books and supplies, describes the kind of work flow a church librarian will need to adopt, and offers up a great deal of information on the proper shelving and classification of all types of library items. I found her enumeration of relevant Dewey call numbers for religion and related subjects particularly helpful - even though I'm sure there have been some minor changes to that classification scheme in the years since the most recent edition of this book was published.McMichael doesn't just rely on her own experience, as she frequently cites the results of a survey she conducted among church libraries both big and small. That helps make this book useful to all church librarians. Whether you're blessed with a thriving library with lots of traffic or faced with the daunting task of starting a library in a small little room far away from the sanctuary, you're sure to find something useful in the pages of this book. McMichael's added emphasis on the spiritual and social aspects of church librarianship really helps you to stop and rethink the very essence of the job and the potential role you can play in the spiritual growth of your church.

This edition of the book is from 1998, but I don't think it's changed much since the 1987 edition. Still, it's a valuable help for a church librarian.It's cheerful and detailed.

This was a very helpful book for new librarians.

Betty McMichael's book. "The Church Librarian's Handbook" is no longer available. Neither the author nor the publisher have copies. I have spent at least four hours on the Internet searching unsuccessfully for copies. I do think the posted price for a used copy is highway robbery, but that is my personal opinion. I finally wrote to Mrs. McMichael who assured me Baker Publishing had no intention of reissuing this excellent resource. It is a shame, since I have suggested it to many new librarians and would like to continue to do so.
